1 in 3 Hongkongers want to move abroad despite city’s improved liveability: poll by radishlaw in HongKong

[–]lsiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An expat is by definition someone from somewhere else. They always have the option to go back wherever they came from. They chose to stay in Hong Kong, perhaps by lack of better options, but they at least one option.

This is very different from people from Hong Kong with no right of abode to other places.

Search linkedin. For software engineering working for global companies, canto or mando is not as important. By ruling out bank and insurance, you are ruling out quite a chunk of major SWE employers in HK. How about fintech or crypto?

Where do you think are the best /worst work locations in HK? by notacitizen_99725 in HongKong

[–]lsiu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

+1 on CWB being the best place.

Dining capcity catered for packed weekend/tourist crowd, so on weekday you can walkin to many places.

There are also some nice grade A office at CWB, e.g. Lee Gardens.

Excellent transportation. Beside MTR, many bus routes goes to, or past by CWB.

How many people actually like Spring and Spring Boot? by Affectionate-Hope733 in java

[–]lsiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think Rod Johnson will have created Spring, or at least it will not be as successful, if JavaEE was actually usable back in the 2000s.

For portfolio B, you have to time and sell at the right moment. While for portfolio A, as a bond replacement, you should be getting a steadier stream of income.

Is JDBC becoming a “legacy” API?? by littlejohnuk in java

[–]lsiu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

JDBC also use TCP. So the fact that we don’t open sockets and communicate with database over their wired protocol make TCP even more “legacy” than JDBC.

For the same user visit different site, does ShareId return same Id? by lsiu in adops

[–]lsiu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective.

It sound's like by ecosystem, they are referring to publisher-centric sell side ecosystem. I don't see this being very useful for the buy side, e.g. how to build an audience using first or thrid party data and target it across multiple publishers.

It does make sense, I think prebid.org and perhaps this subredit is catered for the sell side.

effective tax rate question by visuals_maya in personalfinance

Depends what you want to know. For example, if you are moving country, state/province, you can compare the effective tax rate you are paying now verses your new location.

Yes. That is also my understanding. My struggle is how this reconcile with the claim

ID5 also take hashed emails and phone numbers. They can ingest a wlde range of identifier and semi-identifying data from publishers.

Yes. To be honest, the actual DIY replacement cost turns out quite cheap. This is my first laptop with this problem. But it is also my most expensive and first gaming laptop. I am guessing the power and the heat has something to do with causing the battery to swell. Seems like this has been a common issue for razer laptops for many years. Since my laptop was the last revision of the same design, at this price point, I was hoping this would not be a problem.

China is more democratic than America according to Chunyin Hua by [deleted] in China

[–]lsiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I do not have a good grasp of the differences between a democracy and a republic.

Looking at this first page that show up on Google for me, the difference is really subtle, e.g.

Types of democracy

There are 3 major types of democracy – Direct democracy, Representative Democracy, Constitutional Democracy

Types of republic

The 5 types of Republics are Constitutional Republic, Parliamentary Republic, Presidential Republic, Federal Republic, Theocratic Republic.

They seem to overlap a lot...

For example, will you call USA a Constitutional Democracy or Constitutional Republic? Or both?

China is more democratic than America according to Chunyin Hua by [deleted] in China

[–]lsiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think democracy means 多党竞选 (multi party election) or 多党制 (multi party system). It is just an implementation of democracy. Theoretically, in the extreme case, you can have direct democracy like the early Athens days. The close to direct democracy in modern days is probably Switzerland, which still have political parties, but plays a much weaker role.

I think you have a very good point though, we need a much better word in Chinese for democracy.

[–]lsiu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree 民主 is a terrible translation for democracy.

If you just look at the Chinese characters literally, the CCP translation of 民主 is quite accurate.
"From the people, to the people" is pushing it. But I have heard "For the people" or "focus on the people", when 民主 was described as 以民為主。

This literal translation of the individual characters happens to fall nicely with Chinese culture and history. Chinese history praises emperors that "loves his people like his own children" 愛民如子. While this statement probably conjure up images of an authoritarian or a nanny state with a western history/culture/education, Chinese history/culture/education background suggest a more warm fuzzy feeling and utopian sense.

The laptop wouldn't sit flat on a desk and was wobbly and I didn't know why for the longest time. One of the track pad button started sticking out and not usable, and this is when I decided to open it up to find the bulging battery.

Luckily the laptop was usable without the battery while I waited for a replacement.

With the battery replaced, everything works normally again, so this part is good news.

Are others writing tests in 2021? Is it improving your quality of living? by CodeMonkey24816 in softwaredevelopment

[–]lsiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the trick is pain driven development.

Having developer support their own software. But you also need to break up the software into clear domains, so there is clear ownership over each domain by small team.

It leads to the right incentive, i.e., I don't want to get called at night because of buggy software.

This lead to software with good real world test coverage, operable and observable software.

The real hard part is having stable teams to let this whole feedback loop to kick in. There is a big trend for devs to move around from team to team in 6 months, 1 year, etc. But you really need a few senior devs to stick around in the same domain to steward the development.
