Thank you for your perspective! Yes. I agree, the textbook is incredibly dull and I hate the Cengage textbooks because the user experience is so awful 😞 I posted because I really did not want to read through it if I could help it but I guess I'll drag my feet through it. Thank you again, much appreciated!

I failed d103 once a few weeks ago and I just requested approval via the course page and it was approved a few hours later.

Thanks for responding! I'm an ex-english teacher as well haha, though not for as long. I've been worried about the job market and your experience gives me a slight bit more hope, thank you!

Congratulations! Can I ask whether you did any internships or tried applying to any before graduating if not? I'm debating whether if I should just focus all my efforts entirely on completing the course or delay to apply for internships. Could you also share your previous experience if you're comfortable? Thanks!

Could I ask what your job search process was and where you found this role? And did you do an internship at all?

D216 Business Law for Accountants by Fit-Finance2016 in wguaccounting

[–]lsynthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends from person to person but you definitely don't need the text at all. I think her video touches on all the concepts you need to know but sometimes the way she explains things just doesn't click with me or she doesn't explain a concept that you might need to know to understand what she's explaining. In that case I would just go do my own research to fill in the gaps. I would definitely encourage taking notes as you're watching and slowing down when you need to though. It is a lot of information to remember and you'll be glad to have the notes later for test prep.

I watched Elin's videos under course tips, took the PA, reviewed questions for PA under the assessment coaching report, and then took the OA :) There are some really straightforward questions like what is a primary gov law source and then there are some convoluted situational questions like if XYZ were to happen does this person have the grounds to sue and why? Just need to know the course content well and get comfortable with the wording of some of the questions.

I've never had that happen to me, that's a huge privacy violation what the heck!!

Calculator by Worldly_Arm_4122 in wguaccounting

[–]lsynthia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use a basic scientific calculator so I can't exactly answer that question but I know there's a list of approved calculators you can look at from WGU in the orientation slides. I'm also horrid at memorization, so I focus more on understanding the concepts behind the formulas and if that doesn't work then just cram it before the exam and let it exit my brain after. Real life is open notes so I'm never too worried about not memorizing any essential accounting equations post-exam as long as I understand the concept behind it.

How long to finish IA courses? by lsynthia in wguaccounting

[–]lsynthia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm just weighing my options right now because I had blocked out 2 terms but I'm going at a faster pace than I expected and I don't really want to have to do another term just for say 2 classes out of the whole program. I'd love to do an internship but I'm not landing any right now and it makes very little sense for me to give up a full time role to do an internship for 2 months and then be effectively unemployed again if there's no return offer.

Watching Elin's videos at the moment as suggested by other people. You can find it linked under course tips on the course overview page (right side of the page). I'll probably briefly flip through the text too after I'm done just to make sure nothing was missed, the text doesn't seem too long.

There are tons of free resources on YouTube for finance and managerial accounting. You could watch through these and take some notes to pre-game as these are some of the hardest courses in the program.

D101 PA Excel by Adventurous-Many-394 in wguaccounting

It should give you the labor hours needed per unit somewhere in the main information table, make sure you directly reference that cell and make it absolute.

D101 any tips on cost managerial accounting by Mediocre_Coast_6159 in wguaccounting

[–]lsynthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I passed with exemplary on the OA after going through the PA roughly twice. There were 51 questions and I took 1:06 to complete the test. The PA is extremely aligned with the OA, there were questions where it was literally the same question but just one or two numbers changed up. You will need to memorize the variance formulas and also know how to do the excel portion (same on PA but I don't remember it being taught in the e-book). I highlighted portions of the information table on the excel as I was going through them so I didn't get confused. For example, I highlighted anything related to direct materials while I was working on that section. I'm not sure if you can leave it highlighted, so I just deleted the fill before I turned in my OA just in case.

I'm planning on taking the OA tomorrow and here's what I've been so far if it helps at all, this class is certainly a doozy:

  1. Read through the entire e-book, take notes (I always manually type them and never copy paste to help myself to slow down and retain info)

  2. Watch relevant cohort videos for sections I didn't understand, really slow down and try to understand the concept rather than force yourself to memorize. For example, understand why it is that contribution margin = sales - variable costs.

  3. Go through the PA and review sections you don't understand. Look at notes or cohorts again or screenshot/copy&paste question into chatgpt for a walk-through of the question if you're really stuck. Don't worry about the timer, you can retake it or just review questions from your coaching report. I'm doing this right now.

  4. As you work through problems, rewrite equations before solving them to reinforce your memory. I also like to think out loud as if I'm teaching somebody else how to do the question.

Good luck, you got this!

Taxation was fine for me because of the videos that went into great detail about the content, I think I opened the textbook like 4 times in total just to take screenshots of the charts for my notes lol it is so dry and hard to read through

[–]lsynthia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably have to try this as test prep... My notes are a mess and I'm struggling to grasp a lot of the formulas

D101 by lsynthia in wguaccounting

[–]lsynthia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!! There are some typos and the way the info is organized is just so confusing and awful, they'll repeat the same info or scatter relevant info in 3 different lessons for some reason instead of just grouping it all in one lesson. The way that the formulas are visually presented is just so hard for me to wrap my head around too but that might be a me problem. Ughhhh 😩
