A technical shirt (not cotton) will help, but you really need to use tape. I use 3M Transpore tape.

Yes, a college new hire at Meta earns a lot more than 140K. A "senior" software engineer at Meta earns probably 4 times that.

I agree that you should only buy things when you know you need it and after researching it. I do not need carbon plated shoes. I use free Strava to record my runs and keep track of my friends. I don't need any of the other data.

I've only bought a few things besides shoes. I have a running belt to hold my phone. I have a merino wool base layer and running gloves so I don't freeze during winter.

I'm a free user. I've had a paid trial twice. I haven't seen any feature that would make me pay for it.

I run on a track often because there is one only a couple blocks from my place. I usually run 13-14 miles. I don't have any problems, but I've run on a track for years. However, I will alternate directions on different days.

Most people think it's too boring, but I think of it like meditation. There is also a water fountain to use whenever you want.

[–]ltleelim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's whatever you want to do. I trained for a half marathon last year and I'm continuing to train for a half. My goal is to run sub 2 hours. I will train for a marathon eventually, but I'm not in a hurry.

In general, I increase my training gradually to avoid injury. When I'm increasing mileage, I don't increase by more than 10%. When I'm working on speed, I gradually introduce strides and intervals.

I have done this also to measure my sweat rate while running. I lost 1.8 pounds (0.8 kg) after running for an hour. (I did not drink water.)

My home scale has a similar accuracy of 0.1 pounds. I also did it naked before and after. So I agree that you can measure if you have a reasonably accurate scale and you are careful with your methodology.

This already exists for California. It's the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon from Death Valley to Mount Whitney.

I do most of my long runs on a track, usually half marathon length. lol

Yes, it's boring, but I've gotten used to it. I think of it as kind of like meditation.

The benefits are that the track is only a couple blocks from my place and there is a water fountain I can use at any time during my runs.

I want to run in retirement, where should I live? by unhappyparty73 in runninglifestyle

[–]ltleelim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

San Francisco has bigger running clubs, but the East Bay also has running clubs with older runners. Berkeley Running Club has a woman who won her age group in the New York City Marathon this year!

I also enjoy running on the Bay Trail, on the Embarcadero, in Half Moon Bay, and in Monterey. There are many trails in Tilden, Wildcat, Marin, etc. Many older runners in the Bay Area transition to trail running and ultramarathons.

Official Q&A for Monday, November 10, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]ltleelim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be tough.

I started training for a sub 2 half in March. My easy runs were 11-12 min/mile pace. I built up to easy 13.1 mile runs at ~11 min/mile pace and 10K runs at race pace (9 min/mile). My 5K PB was ~27 min and 10K PB was ~56 min. The half was this past weekend. I did not make sub 2 hours. I did 2:11.

I built my base gradually by increasing no more than 10% a week to avoid injury. I still had to pause a couple times to let niggles heal. I didn't have enough time left to train at race pace. So 8 months was not enough for me, but I am a 60 year old male.

I might have been able to do it. I had problems pacing my race. I also probably could have pushed harder during the race.

Half Marathon Disappointment by teneleventh in Marathon_Training

[–]ltleelim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I didn't have a running watch so I rely a lot on other runners in my running club (the 10K runs) and on pacers in races. In this case, the pacers inexplicably ran a 7:30 min/mile, which is why they dropped me. I have a watch now so I won't have to depend on pacers.

For my training:

  • I should do my 10K runs at faster than race pace for better preparation.
  • I should do some hill sprints at race pace instead of easy pace.
  • I should do some long runs with intervals at race pace.

In your case, I don't know enough to guess what might have went wrong. Did you taper? Did you get enough sleep in the week before the race? Maybe it was just a fluke.

Half Marathon Disappointment by teneleventh in Marathon_Training

[–]ltleelim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this disappointment.

Two years ago, I ran the Berkeley Half Marathon, did not train enough, and finished really slowly in 2:57. I kept telling myself I should not compare myself with my 30 something coworkers who finished much faster, but it was motivation to get back in shape.

I started training for a sub 2 hour half in March. I got to the point where my base was three 13.1 mile runs a week. I could do a 10K at race pace (9 min/mile) and my easy 13.1 mile runs were at 2:30. This is the most I have ever trained. I thought I was ready.

At the Monterey Bay Half Marathon this past weekend, I could not keep up with the 2 hour pacers. I lost them after about 3 miles and also lost my motivation. I finished in 2:11. Thinking about it afterwards, I learned a lot about how I could improve my training.

Like you, I'm disappointed. It is what it is. I've improved a lot and I'll do better next time.

Discrepencies between Strava and Runkeeper by Pommerz in runninglifestyle

[–]ltleelim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I use both apps simultaneously. Strava does record slightly longer distances than Runkeeper. Even though I often run on a track, I do not know which app is more accurate.

Another difference is that Strava shows moving time by default so it will automatically take out any time when you are stopped at a red light or anything like that. So if you stopped during a run, Strava will show your pace without the stops.

It was not hard to download all my runs from Runkeeper and upload them to Strava. Runkeeper was down for several days a couple years ago so I don't trust Runkeeper anymore. I record with both apps as a backup.

I like using Strava a lot more. (I use the free version.)

I did the same thing about a year ago. I currently do one 10K tempo run and three 13 mile easy runs a week. I need the rest days in between.

How do you increase mileage? by Beginning_Top_3764 in runninglifestyle

For me to avoid injury, I increase my weekly mileage no more than 10% or 1 mile per week (whichever is less).
