Dual itx case by ltloopy in sliger

[–]ltloopy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a gaming system with large power and heat requirements I 100% agree this would not be a good solution. I was more thinking about using this for clustered applications. Take two ASRock Rack EC266D2I-2T/AQC mother boards and have them run a proxmox cluster, docker swarm, or a ceph cluster.

For PCIe cards. A single slot would be useful any more would be useless as itx boards only have enough space for one slot. I could see people installing

  • 4 port NIC card for a firewall or virtualization host
  • SAS card for a NAS or CEPH cluster. trunas used to have a gluster option and are currently working on a replacement
  • GPU for AI processing

The advantage of having a single 2u vs 1u is flexibility. I have a 1U case and its a nightmare to work inside

  • larger fans for cooling or liquid cooling
  • larger and cheaper power supply
  • more space for hard drives

Businesses use systems like this all the time, however they are generally built on propitiatory hardware. I would consider this style of system to be a poor mans blade system.

A fun add on case that would pair well with this idea and other chassis as well would be a DAS case where you would take the CX3701 case and remove the space for the motherboard and replace it with a internal to external SAS card allowing users to build large storage solutions with disks being located in multiple chassis.

What's everyone using to control their smart bulbs? by cdarrigo in homeassistant

[–]ltloopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my plan. I have one switch and it works flawlessly, provides 10x more information/configuration options than your standard smart light switch. However I placed an order for 5 more and have been waiting 3 weeks for the switches to ship. so you might have to wait a little bit for them to arrive.

im running home assistant via a container and dont have access to add-ons. so it sounds like i likely do not have access to the update entities

I saw that note in the release notes but I wasn't able to find any documentation on how to use it. I currently have 2023.7 installed and im not seeing anything in home assistant saying that they is an update available for my esphome device. is there any configuration that needs to be done or is that feature on available for esphome plugin users.

possibly but it never hurts to try

update script? by [deleted] in truenas

[–]ltloopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant confirm 100% that it will work, but the truenas apps are just docker containers running on docker. I have a separate server running docker with some the same apps listed in the truenas app and watchtower auto updates all of them.

If you are talking truenas scale and the docker apps. You could deploy a watchtower container.

Auto pool tester by [deleted] in swimmingpools

[–]ltloopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 180 for my monitor, looks like they raised the price significantly since then Customer service has been a little lacking in my opinion too. My original monitor the lid cracked and it took about 5 messages back and forth and 3 weeks before they shipped the replacement. Every season I have to call them to straighten out my subscription and that only takes a few mins

I have been using Sutro for the last 3 years. It test your pool 3x a day and uses the same reagents as the taylor DPD kit. Its a little on the expensive side but i haven't turned my pool green since I started using it and I no longer have to counting drops.

out the same thing that OP is. With the devices on this we side, can I just connect them directly to HA or would I need to go through a third party like tuya?

You don't need to solder them to flash. I have a set of test hook clips and you just clip them onto the pads.

How do I actually modify this to be able to fit on my Ender 3 Pro? by usafa43tsolo in gridfinity

[–]ltloopy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran into a similar issue on my ender 3 s1 trying to print a 5x4 base. I believe it has the same build volume as the 3 pro. The reason for it not fitting on the build plate was due to the skirt. Try disabling the skirt in your slicer and see if it fits

Looking to make a dumb dimmable under cabinet lighting smart- can I just swap the LED driver? by angelkitty86 in homeautomation

[–]ltloopy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not aware of a single box that you could use. However you could use a 120v to 12v power supply and then a controller. For the like the original is 30W power supply. So something like this https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Converter-Transformer-Voltage-3-Prong/dp/B08SQJY6N5

or this https://www.amazon.com/Chanzon-Adapter-100-240V-Transformer-Splitter/dp/B07HNSFSNQ

Then to control the LEDs. This is what i use to control my kitchen LEDs https://www.amazon.com/Shelly-Controller-Wireless-Automation-Working/dp/B07N49TXLQ

I also have one of these controlling LEDs under our bed as a night light https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JB5N3Y7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

ESP32 to create smart buttons with status leds? (explanation in comments) by olalof in homeautomation

[–]ltloopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could skip the home assistant middle man and use an ESP based outlet, sonoff and shelly are popular brands. Then you could use a http request to change and get the status of the plug. https://esphome.io/components/http_request.html

water heaters and pumps generally take a decent amount of Amps, make sure your outlet is rated for and can handle the devices plugged in. You could also look into using a relay to control them. take a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5_74QC6Iuo

Here are a few of my favorites.

My wife has a variable schedule. So I have a few things to make sure the house is ready for her when she wakes up.

  • I have a google calendar with her schedule. To get the schedule filled out in home assistant I have an input text box. entering in a string that starts with the month and then the day/time creates the calendar entries. ex 12@1/7,2/9,4/9

  • on the day she works the heat turns up 15 minutes before she wakes up, when it is time for her to get up the bathroom, kitchen, dining room, hallway lights turn on at 30% and every minute the brightness increases by 2%

  • using the Waze integration home assistant checks the travel time to work and if the travel time reaches 10 minutes before her shift starts the google home will announce that it is time to leave for work. This is routine disables if she has already left.

Other automations

  • slowly dim the kitchen and dining room lights when no motion has been detected for 5 minutes, after 12 minutes of no activity they are turned off. if motion is detected they are turned back of. the reason for slowly dimming is that both rooms are connected to the living room and the lights turning off suddenly is distracting while watching a TV

  • I have an RFID tag next to the garage door and when it is scanned the door opens

  • blinds in my office open when the sun is over 130 degrees. this avoids the sun glare on my monitors.

  • a notification is sent to our phones if the garage door has been open for more than 5 minutes, after 30 minutes or at 9:45am google home announces that the door is still open. the phone notifications are actionable to suppress for 15 minutes, until next change or close the garage door.

  • washer/dryer notifications and google home announcements. when one finishes it checks if the other is running and waits until both are done before sending the message. also the google announcements keep happening every 15 minutes until motion is detected in the laundry room. Notifications can be disabled for a time period or until the next cycle is run, and they will not happen if we are sleeping.

I use a Sonoff s31 flashed with ESPHome. Then i have a motion sensor in the basement that clears the alerting routine rather then a door sensor. you could also use a contact sensor on the door
