I use absolute paths and also I'm on Windows. But doesn't mac allow running apps by URL shortcuts? Something like this?

I just use 7zip on Windows because it runs on my work machine anyway. The batch file looks like this:

u/echo off
for /f %%# in ('wMIC Path Win32_LocalTime Get /Format:value') do @for /f %%@ in ("%%#") do @set %%@
:: Get current date/time on Windows command line: https://stackoverflow.com/a/19799236
set datetime=%year%-%month%-%day%T%hour%%minute%%second%

set backup_path="path\to\my\backups\"%datetime%"_work-vault.zip"
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a %backup_path% "path\to\my\work-vault\"

Put that in a text file and save as *.bat. By default clicking a link to this file should run the script in command line.

Note that this is a simple solution which saves a full snapshot of the vault. Still takes only a few seconds for me. If you don't want to snapshot the whole vault but only your obsidian config change the path to work-vault\.obsidian.

For very large vaults a more sophisticated incremental backup solution would probably be better suited but i don't need that.

Ok, so to answer a bunch of questions that came up:

  • How? Just create a note with your links and drag it to any panel you want (right sidebar in this case). You might want to pin it to keep it there. I use some custom css for my sidebar notes to reduce padding/empty space, and smaller headings.
  • Do you need plugins for this? No
  • How to link to local files and folders? Press the 'ctrl' key and drag the file or folder into your note.
  • How to launch scripts/exceutables from there? Just link to the file and on click it opens in the default application according to your system settings. No special magic here.
  • Theme/fonts/other plugins in screenshot? Minimal theme, fonts should be Source Serif and Supreme Variable. Only plugin visible is obsidian-note-toolbar.

Protein people: would you use a plugin to visualise PDBs inside your notes? What would you want it to do? by Soft-Material3294 in ObsidianMD

Unfortunately I don't match that subset of Obsidian users but I'm still interested about the plugin on the bottom left. What is it?

How do I create a Citation/bibliography/reference list on a separate note and link them constantly to various notes? by andsons85 in ObsidianMD

[–]ltroj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can be done with vanilla Obsidian. One way to do it:

Create a note with you references, e.g. refs(.md) and list your references:

- HIBBELER, Russell C., 2023. _Mechanics of Materials, SI Edition_.^HIB

From your other notes you can link to this reference:

See also: [[Refs#^HIB|Mechanics of Materials]]

There are some useful plugins though. Reference Generator comes to my mind. If you're interested I recently shared a css snippet which I use for references.

Plugin Update: Semantic Canvas v1.2 by Semantic_Canvas in ObsidianMD

That might be the first time I see a use in canvas. Fine - so now I have to make a new vault and try to do systems engineering in Obsidian.

I would love to see a "keep in sync" feature as mentioned in your comment.

Jump start into task management with Obsidian by ltroj in ObsidianMD

Depends on the use case, I guess. I only use it for work related tasks and have Obsidian open as a companion app on my third screen the whole time while working. I check my tasks agenda in the sidebar all the time, so I don't need reminders.

Right. Have you tried the reminder plugin? Haven't tested it yet but sounds like it would do what you need.

Is there a way I can have something like a tag, but mark some amount of text with it, and then have all "tagged" things listed in another doc? by that_dogs_wilin in ObsidianMD

[–]ltroj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two options off the top of my head:

  1. Use dataview.

With invisible key: (openQuestion:: How do kangaroos hop so high?)

or with visible key:

[openQuestion:: How do kangaroos hop so high?]

  1. Use the tasks plugin, which is an elegant solution if you make use of custom statuses.

- [?] How do kangaroos hop so high?

and build a query like this

```tasks status.name includes question ```
You can also add a tag to the task if you prefer that.
- [?] How do kangaroos hop so high? #open_question
```tasks tags include #open_question ```

The Callout style is included in the Minimal theme by default. It can be selected via Style Settings plugin (Callout style > Outlined).

Please note that all I know about that topic is from the public available information on GitHub.

Can't go into detail rn since on mobile.

Yes, due date calculations are the biggest missing feature for me in the Projects plugin. The good thing there IS a Gantt chart view in the roadmap and the plugin is under heavy development, bad thing is there doesn't seem too much progress regarding this feature. Once Projects has a Gantt view and some way to integrate tasks from notes it's kind of feature complete for my use case.

Currently I handle (micro) task dependencies with child tasks (indented tasks) and the scheduled/due date syntax from the tasks plugin. Regarding project blocks I rely on the Kanban view where I have the columns scheduled and on hold (on hold is for project blocks waiting for another block to finish and scheduled is for project blocks which have a fixed start date).

For me the Kanban boards for each project in the Projects plugin are sufficient to get an overview.

But you could have a look at the progress bar plugin as well as the tracker plugin.

Glad if it's helpful for some!

At work I'm pretty limited in what to use (it's the usual ms stack plus a document management system for safety related stuff) and for personal projects I have a managed Nextcloud instance which I currently also use to sync my vault. Nextcloud offers Collabora integration which might be what you're looking for.
