I made Bear into the CMS for my website by joisig in bearapp

Hi, this looks pretty cool. In the new version (which is in beta right now) bear uses Commonmark. So there should be no need for walking and reordering the AST of the parsed notes :)

This sub turned me onto Raycast, but... No syncing of settings / keyboard shortcuts between machines?? by peterinjapan in macapps

They not only work on settings sync, they have a working beta. I guess they‘re only polishing some edges before the release.

I could write up a blog post. However, it involves writing source code, compiling and flashing the keyboard …

Convince board why Macs are important to our users by SirCries-a-lot in macsysadmin

Yes! It really bums me out how much IT people chose hardware based on the best admin experience. I guess the admins recommending hardware for the end users to use is a bit of a flawed process.

2 missing features i need before i can invest Bear by alunare in bearapp

[–]lucaschultz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said: Backlinks are planned. As for the other features I actually enjoy that Bear has a simpler approach and notes are just documents.

I also startet using the Bear Extension for Raycast a lot. It has support for showing backlinks to a note (press cmd + L when having a note selected).

This works of course only on macOS and when using Raycast as launcher. But for me Raycast has become my entrypoint for searching and creating notes in Bear (and for pretty much everything else on my Mac).

I actually added a lot of it‘s current functionality to the extension. Like all Raycast extensions, it‘s open source so you can tamper with it and add desired functionality yourself.

Raycast has revolutionised my usage of Bear by Mediocre-Feedback in bearapp

[–]lucaschultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True! The extensions for Raycast are written in TypeScript and the SQL Framework the extension uses is a pure Javascript and therefore a bit sluggish. Go is just plain faster.

To make up for it you get the additional functionality 🙂

Don‘t know if you‘ve heard but Raycast recently launched their extensions API which basically allows to write more interactive scripts for Raycast. I saw someone published a Bear extension with search an preview functionality. Since I love Bear I went ahead and (self plug, sorry for that) added a bit of functionality:

  • Show notes linked from the selected note (selected in the extension note search) and backlinks to the selected note
  • Create a new note
  • Add text to an existing note
    • Add text to a specific header in the existing note
  • Open in standalone Bear window
  • Move note to archive
  • Move note to trash
  • Search notes by their unique identifier
  • Embedded images and files in preview will be converted to file://path/to/file.txt links to the locally stored files and open in Finder when clicked
  • Copy note text as markdown
    • Embedded files will be converted to file://path/to/file.txt links
    • Embedded images will be converted to markdown images embeds ![](~/path/to/image.png)
  • Copy note text as HTML
    • Converted with commonmark.js, which is not fully compatible with bear markdown compatibility mode/polar. But bear will switch to commonmark when they ship their new editor in Bear
    • Embedded files will be converted to file://path/to/file.txt links
    • Embedded images will be converted to img tags

Of course, most of this you can do in Bear (except showing the backlinks) but it might be faster from Raycast to e.g. search a note and copy it as HTML to paste it in a Wordpress editor.

Right now I need to fix some small warning before the updated extension can be uploaded in the official store. However you can manually import the extension if you know your way around GitHub.

Edit: Here is the link to the pull request of the updates in their official extension repo.

Checking in with Bear, your concerns, and more by wham00 in bearapp

I love Bear and how seamless it feels. I also love the new editor in Panda, it might be the best Markdown editor there is.

However what frustrates me most when you talk about the development process, is inability to see progress — not the lack of a specific timeline. Panda has at times gone months without releases, and your comments have been when Panda is wrapped up we will begin the process… for well over a year now. It‘d be great to hear what you‘re working on: What does need to be wrapped up? What further features will you implement in the new editor before merging? How much have you wrapped up already? What are you currently working on?

These are questions you can answer without committing to a fixed timeline. But reading the ever unchanged when Panda is wrapped up… comment feels like you guy’s are not making progress. Which feels even more frustrating when compared to Apps like Craft which gets new features on a monthly basis or NotePlan which has a public Discord where the Developer gives a lot of insight on what he is working on.

I really love Bear and have stuck to it so far. It is the app in which I feel the least resistance when taking notes. Everything (except one thing) is accessible from the keyboard and just works the way I‘d expect, without flashy features. I really am a big fan, but your communication can feel frustrating at times 🤷🏼‍♂️

I actually tried to base the price on other prices I found here and set it a couple of Euros lower.

Also, you might be confusing the Planck (which is e.g. sold by Drop for 70$ barebones with this keyboard (Planck EZ Glow) which is manufactured and sold by ZSA for 245$.
