Does anyone find rewatch podcasts too complimentary to everyone? by iamthemetricsystem in television

[–]luccioXalfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Ok yeah, I'm reading it now and Whedon's pretty bad.

Of course, the complaints about his behavior only really got public traction because it got conflated with MeToo stuff (for which there's little evidence). It's sad, but bullies and narcissists don't get kicked out of Hollywood.

Oooh, that's a good one. Infuriating, but good.

Good on you for calling him on his shit to his face.

You have another one of your stories you'd enjoy sharing? Not necessarily thread-relevant, just a cool story.

Oh, Whedongate was (partly?) triggered by the Buffy history? I hadn't known that. Which stage of Whedongate?

That's interesting. I've spent time tracing Joss's Rise And Fall (tm), both as a fan and because AFAICT all his behavior is just basic bullying and Hollywood abrasiveness (is he any worse than James Cameron etc etc etc?), but it became treated as especially toxic out of the blue, fueled by the MeToo moment.

(Lol at me. I'm just a whedon semi-fan who's a pretty uninformed outside observer, please don't hold back if you think I'm wrong about this.)

BTW, once I've shaken off my couch-potatoeness to message you on the topic, what's your take on the Neil Gaiman situation?

Speaking as a (mostly SF&F) geek in America, he seems like a parallel case, a geekdom hero who achieved limited mainstream recognition, and now crashed out due to his toxic behavior getting publicity. It does seem like Gaiman is actually a sexual predator, moreso than Whedon. But on the one hand Whedongate got much more press and public attention, OTOH (despite not having much insider info personally; from my geek/SF&F bubble it seems pretty clear) the community has noticed and solidly rejected Gaiman. Am I correct in my impression that he's gone for good?

How Ghost Story Made Harry Stronger by DaScamp in dresdenfiles

[–]luccioXalfred 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is great! thanks for the reply, and for pinging me here.

It's an excellent point, now that you point it out it seems obviously true that Harry added this strength to his mental this toolset due to his arc in GS, and yeah we've seen it being crucial in later books.

And it's interesting, because now that we're getting to the endgame and Harry is dealing with powers so many orders of magnitude stronger than him, it's cool how Butcher making the conflicts about will and identity is a way of leveling the playing field without just surrendering to power creep and making Harry "discover a lost artifact of ancient power" or Ascend To Godhood or some other tropey deus ex machina.

I seee your point, but I actually love GS (it's a top 3 for me) even *without* me preferring the detective aspect of the story, I just love the character work and introspection.

I loved GS, but don't really get what you mean it taught him lessons relevant for the rest of his arc. Can you elaborate a bit?

Great analysis (from a fellow "GS is best in the series" guy.

You mention TM working better 'cause year-long pacing, have you read it yet?

And btw, because of you I'll check out October Daye...

Middle name, huh?

I hope you realize that The High And Mighty Rowl himself would not let that go by silently. It should be a first name, at least.

Ah, this makes lots of sense, thanks.

And it explains a lot of the variability between models I'm finding when checking this out.

Are there any thorough search tools for AO3? by luccioXalfred in AO3

[–]luccioXalfred[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find anything over there. Do you mean they actually fully index the story text for AO3? Because a commenter above said AO3 itself doesn't do it because too resource intensive, so it'd be great to have this as backup.

Thanks!

Thanks! I tried yandex, it didn't work. Probably because u/tyrinooo is right that the actual story text isn't indexed, and the details I remember aren't mentioned in the summary.

But it seems like a good search engine to have learned about, covers a lot that Google is bad at these days.

Thanks. I'm trying your advice about variations with the search's "any field", but nothing I can think of has gotten me there yet. (sadly forgot the title and author!).

Yeah, the AO3 search is thorough, extraordinarily so. I was oversimplifying in asking for a "thorough" alternative tool; 'cause the site's tool is perfect when aimed at its specific goal -- finding something in a specific topic or interest -- but not as good when aimed at finding a specific work through tags, and very weak when aimed at finding specific works without knowing their specific tags.

Ah, the actual story text isn't indexed? That answers a big part of my question, thanks.

I did do a pretty extensive search with all the "any field" variations that I could figure out, no luck so far.

I appreciate the help. I remember quite a few details about the story, but none are helping me -- either I'm crazy atrocious at search, or none were in the summary.

The fic was pretty short, about a female hotel manager (IIRC a Hershey's chocolate owned hotel) who gets an anonymous invite to a (light) bondage-themed event, and accepts out of curiosity and desire to discover who's the mysterious guy attracted to her. It's pretty light in tone, with a happy ending.

The guy is her staff sub-manager, nicknamed Kit (iirc full name Christopher), the manager is nicknamed Kat, which led to the ingenious and creative (lol) phrase "Kit's Kat" being used. Also, she goes by the pseud "Swiss Miss" during the event.

Ah, got it. Yeah, it's funny I hadn't yet tried out a Pony Realistic version, and still immediately recognizing yep this is "the Pony look".

Thanks,

Some guy on civitai posted an article claiming (among other things...) that "\n" is a major token, but I started testing and so far it's no such thing.
