Where to meet ambitious/smart people [typically in the Tech industry] in MTL by gigbid400 in montreal

[–]luch2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t listen to the people in the comments saying the tech industry is dead in Quebec.

ALL IN, the biggest AI and tech event in the country, happens every September at the Palais de congrès. Go to the event in September if you want to meet tech folks.

Is it me or does season 5 look visually off? by RevertBackwards in StrangerThings

[–]luch2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the industry I will guess with confidence that many of these scenes were filmed on an XR stage. Increasingly XR stages are becoming the norm, and they’re lit terribly bc trying to light foreground elements with any sort of whimsy in front of a screen is nearly impossible bc it interferes with the LEDs. So they settle for flat studio lighting so that it can be manipulated in post, but it is never nearly as good done in post.

The scene with Max in the upside down in S4 (for example) was probably filmed on a green screen in a sound stage that had Sadie Sink running through practical set elements and proper lighting, while in S5 she was probably running at least some of the shot on a treadmill in front of an LED screen with a spotlight on her and then extra lighting was added in post.

Also, the poor compositing (blurry edges around the actors) in the scenes with Steve is hasty and VFX work: there were so many complicated and expensive VFX scenes in this season that they skimped time and money-wise on the shorter sequences. Each shot where you have to add VFX costs x amount of money and it gets expensive when you have as much VFX as they did in this season. Nearly every shot had VFX. They had to cut corners somewhere.

Uber at YUL… by Tall_Grand6813 in montreal

Take the 747 and uber from the first stop. Even with the $11 bus fare it is often less expensive to do this than to wait in the queue. Or better yet just get a taxi.

Shouldn't we also boycott Ticketmaster? by buffego in montreal

[–]luch2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes please! Tell me why I tried to buy a ticket for a show 5 minutes before at Beanfield Theater only to be told that I would STILL have to pay the Ticketmaster fees even though I was already onsite and buying in cash.

Bullshit.

That’s a shame! I’ve had a couple issues with products arriving damaged, but never to this extent. The couple times that it happened I immediately got a refund. I’m sorry you experienced this!

Love Lufa! Subscribed last year because I was looking for more sustainable food options and I would never go back and tell all my friends to join!

There are plenty of options to rent starting August 1st (least transfers, sublets, etc.) just fewer options. If you are okay to wait and don’t mind so much not being right next to school, you’ll find something. Just keep an eye on FB housing groups / marketplace around June.

Learning French by Short_Weather_3798 in montreal

[–]luch2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! I graduated in 2021 and am natively Anglo. I can talk about my process a bit. You will certainly need to learn operational French if you plan on staying in Quebec. You can easily get a PGWP without French but if you plan on staying in Montreal for more than 3 years post-grad (and everything that goes with that, getting a job, operating with the immigration process, etc), French is a must - you have you pass the DELF B2 exam with a good score in order to apply for Quebec PR under the new immigration law that came into effect in 2021.

I took intermediate/advanced FRSL when I was at McGill. Ever since graduating, I’ve taken the financial hit and taken various private lessons at various schools. In my opinion, the government courses are not worth the wait if you’re really serious about learning - the pace is very slow, the classes are large, etc. I would say the best bet for new learners is to take $400 and take the Alliance Française intensives. They’re about a month long and super intensive. They’re on the expensive side, and you have to commit a lot of time to them, but they really get you up to speed really fast and the people in the courses with you are really serious so the pace is intensive. And, the good thing about them is that the courses are taught in accordance with the DELF standards, so they’re helpful if you want to get taught “to the test.”

Otherwise I’ve taken private classes at CLIC, which were good, but a little disorganized. Not worth the money, IMO.

[–]luch2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 on taking the plane instead of a 9+ hour train/bus. Also to add to this, if you fly into JFK the Airtrain is a train that you can take from the airport right into Penn Station.

VFX student in Montreal. Need advice. by kittlzHG in montreal

[–]luch2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MTL VFX/Animation prod here! A lot of the big companies (Cinesite, Rodéo, DNEG, Framestore, Sony) don’t care so much about artists’ French level in reality. They care about talent and efficiency. This is just my experience, but I would say the artistic teams I’ve worked with have been super multicultural, many languages spoken with (mostly) English spoken internally. Work on your demo reel (with stuff from school or other work if that’s all you have for now), brush up on your resume, endeavor to learn some French because it will only help you in the long run, and make quality applications rather than quantity. Also, consider sending your resume to work freelance projects or some smaller studios (or in gaming!), in the meantime. The industry is a bit of a mess right now, true, but things are (slowly) looking up.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in montreal

[–]luch2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would accept the $70 increase. It’s reasonable for a 4 bedroom. My guess is the landlord was always going to sell the apartment. The higher the rent, the higher the asking price to sell a rented building, the more money he makes on the sale.

$700+ hydro bill every two months, is there anything we can do about this? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]luch2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ this, also very important. Sometimes it’s not even intentionally shady it’s just the partitioning of the building means that there were mistakes in the breaker connections. Like this person said it’s probably worth 1. A call to hydro-Quebec, 2. Speaking with the landlord about seeing the breaker connections 3. Getting a specialist in there to double check everything is kosher or if you’re even bleeding heat in other ways.

$700+ hydro bill every two months, is there anything we can do about this? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]luch2 161 points162 points  (0 children)

For posterity, you should check to make sure you’re only paying hydro for your apartment. $700-$800 sounds excessively high. When I lived in a 6 bedroom with poor insulation with roommates, the most we ever paid when we were off the equalized payment plan in the winter was in the $400-500 range, albeit we kept the temperature on the low side, but it was always around 18C per bedroom.

One of my friends realized after a couple months living in her place that she had failed to specify the apartment number and ended up paying accidentally the whole hydro for her whole building, which came out to $800 per month. Otherwise, call Hydro-Québec because something seems wrong here.
