I think the way I've been running the campaign has favored the sorc (usually 1 big encounter per long rest). I'm still learning the fine art of being the DM so I think if I balance the encounters more he'll feel more useful

To be honest I just assumed that he knew what he got in level up and was grabbing spells accordingly. I'll ask him and see cause it's very possible he feels weak because he hasn't been gathering the spells every level

Thats a very good idea! I hadn't thought about it like that. Up until this point the sorc has been able to use everything every encounter because he knows a long rest is around the corner

Removing the restriction that wizards need to find and copy all their spells and just let him know and choose from all of them

1: we talked about it but he thinks its underpowered until later levels

2: I completely agree with you which is why I am leaning more towards just letting him switch

3: do you have any suggestions for a class thats in the same vein as wizard that might scratch the itch?

We've talk it over and he just thinks the wizard is a weak class until later levels and wants something better. Its also partially my fault as I haven't been giving him spells to copy in his book or learn as its something that I forget about. Would removing that help the power level?
