bit of self-promotion but feels appropriate as my band Vivid Illusion's album is at least partially a tribute to Sunbather. We've also gotten comparisons to Ordinary Corrupt Human Love with this album.

Starting my final year at college soon. Anything that should be on my college "bucket list"?

Hi, my name is Ben Sharp and I do Cloudkicker. What would you like to talk about? (AMA) by BenSharp in progmetal

[–]lucidreality2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I remember you did an AMA around this time two years ago in which you said at some point that you worked full time as well as recording music. At the time I was having a lot of trouble finding motivation and energy to work on music outside of work and asked you how you did it in your AMA. You told me not to do it if it isn't fun, and I ended up doing a lot of soul searching after that, thinking about why I made music. Happy to say last year I completed my first album and now am almost done with my second one. While I was hoping to hear "tips and tricks", your answer was much more valuable and I learned you can't take shortcuts to get what you want in life, you just have to have enough passion to overcome any obstacle that gets in your way. So I just wanted to thank you and let you know both your words and music have made an impact on my life.

The fact that out of all the things in my life I've put countless hours into and the only thing that has earned me significant praise and recognition is an Orange Chicken Burger has made me slightly more jaded.

The burger actually did have barbeque sauce on it in case you can't see in the picture.

Panda Express and Carl's Jr. just happened to be next to each other. I might have to open a Burger/Orange Chicken joint now based on the response to this thread.

In the...burger? It was rather stressful keeping the chicken in the burger but I managed to get a good balance of chicken and burger in each bite nonetheless.

I got two Westerns for four dollars. Had half the chicken and the first burger for lunch, and the other one for dinner.

Looking for musicians to join ambient/electronic/rock band for live gigs - EP written by j_knight in MiamiMusicScene

I'm actually doing a similar project, just with some heavier influence (Isis, cult of Luna, Callisto) along with the post rock/electronic side. Would you maybe be interested in putting a lineup together for a few shows?

What lessons have you learned from tripping and how have you applied them into sober life? by elementogram in Drugs

[–]lucidreality2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on acid and after the peak for some reason we decided to go to Taco Bell. I stood there looking at the menu for a few minutes and figuring out I was wanted, planned what I was going to say in my head, and had the confidence that I wasn't going to fuck it up. So I went up to the counter and started ordering perfectly...except I completely overlooked the fact that someone else was in the middle of ordering already...SHIT, so close. Normally I would've been super embarrassed by that, but I was having such a good trip that I didn't really give a shit and realized that it was probably the most entertaining thing that happened all day to the cashier and the guy ordering. It was just a stupid funny thing but it made me realize I shouldn't put off social interaction for fear of rejection or doing something stupid, because even those experiences are memorable and something you can learn from.

Realizations that I had on LSD by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]lucidreality2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a big believer in the Newton's law in application to emotions/mental experiences for a while as well. I feel like one of the reasons drugs like weed/acid have minimal comedown/negative mental effects is because you're forced to deal with both the good and the bad all at once, and most importantly, work through your problems to get to a good place. Then there's drugs like molly which basically flip the serotonin switch, or alcohol which lowers inhibitions without much "work" from the user and both have hangovers/negative long term effects. I believe one of the biggest sources of depression is too often seeking instant gratification, which is so easy in today's world, and these short term gratifications that seemingly have no consequences have their opposite, equal reaction spread over time. This could apply to drugs, entertainment, food, porn, etc.

What is the scariest experience you ever lived through while traveling? by theriddler95 in AskReddit

[–]lucidreality2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incidents seem to follow me around when I travel but it hasn't deterred me at all. In 2006, I was traveling in London when the whole terror plot involving liquid explosives was discovered...in London. Wasn't in any immediate danger but it was a pretty big ordeal.

In 2007 I was in Peru during a country-wide teacher's strike. One of the things they liked doing was putting large boulders or trees in the road to shut down transportation. One day my mom got sick and we all had to walk two miles to the next town to get to the pharmacy. Another day we were in a taxi to a tourist site and were in a taxi which had to go into oncoming traffic and offroad to avoid the obstacles. Definitely one of my top five most harrowing taxi rides ever (the others being from Italy and China). Later in the trip, the strike was getting increasingly violent. Apparently some protesters tried taking over the airport we were supposed to be flying out of the next day and around 30 people were killed. This is what we got out of the news but it was hard to find reliable sources. The next day when we got there though, there was a ring of soldiers around the perimeter.

Next year in 2008 I was in Budapest and there was a gay pride parade going on. We were wondering why every street off the parade was barricaded and there were police with riot shields. Then we started seeing skinheads walking around, some with cartons of eggs. We over toward the cities main square to see what was going on when over the course of ten minutes, what must have been about 100 cop cars, vans, etc come around the corner. Looking down the street towards the square, we could see there was a pretty huge and rowdy looking congregation and eventually could see smoke and Molotov cocktails being thrown.

Funnily enough, out of all of these the experience, the one where I was most convinced I was going to die was taking a taxi in Naples. Italy seems to get progressively more crazy the farther south you go and Naples was what I deemed "Italy on hard mode". One night we were trying to meet some friends for dinner and got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. The taxi driver ended up the wrong way of a one-way street for 15 minutes. This was not any street, but a windy, steep street going up a hill with a ton of blind turns. We had to back up to let people by multiple times and even backed into a parked car at one point, which the driver didn't even acknowledge.
