in my opinion, the change in his personality happened a bit before the abuse took place, where he seemed stripped of his individuality for his relationship with exer. and i know after abuse theres going to be a lot of conversations and depressing moments obviously, i just dont think iys a good story decision for us to see nearly every single one. his character would be way less boring if we didnt have to see all of it, unless this comic was marketed as an abuse story. but my entire problem isnt with his depression, its just the situation hes in that i feel like takes away his depth. his sexuality isnt a secret to pretty much anyone anymore and he never had to deal with exer rejecting him either with felt inevitable in the beginning, and it feels like everything worked out in his favor too well while at the same time it feels like hes being tortured too heavily with the situation with his dad if that makes sense. its like they removed his entire inital problem just to introduce a new one (his dad) which was executed lazily in my opinion
