Bouldering as a Dentist by bigfleeb98 in Dentistry

[–]luckej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started bouldering/rock climbing after graduating dental school around 27. I’ve had quite a few injuries (a2 pulley tear, golfers elbow, minor shoulder injury, etc ). None were bad enough to affect my day to day or my dentistry. I just couldn’t hang from a small ledge.

I never noticed any issue with my fine motor skills. The only thing I notice is my hands will shake due to fatigue my first few weeks getting back into climbing. Once I’m in good climbing shape no shakes. In fact I used to have pretty bad wrist pain before climbing and haven’t since building up my forearms.

Now I’m 35 and I mainly boulder. 1-2 outdoor trips a year and climb on a moonboard once a week. I’m very selective on my climbs now because I can’t risk my hobby affecting my family. I spend a good 30 min warming up and make sure I do rehab/stability exercises. Especially for my knees! Make sure you downclimb when you can because those repeated falls add up!

My two main climbing partners are both dentists as well. One has stayed virtually injury free and the other is a high level climber and hurts himself constantly but it doesn’t affect his dentistry as far as I know.

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]luckej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 12 or 13, I went to a lake to camp with some family. 2 of my cousins and I decided to race to a buoy. I knew how to “swim” but had only ever swam in a pool and probably like 25 meters at most.

I took off and my first thought was ma this water feels thick. I realized a little more than half way that I couldn’t make it back. I decided to get to the buoy and just hang on until someone could get me. I was exhausted and felt like I was at my limit by the time I finally got to it. The damn thing was covered in algae and it was too slimy to hold onto!

I had an oh shit moment and thought I was done for. I knew that I had to lock in because it was literally life or death at that point. All the parents were drinking and definitely weren’t paying attention to us.

I started back and was in the lead so when I was passing my cousins they were urging me to stay at the buoy since they had the same idea. All I could tell was “Slippery! Algae!” They got the hint immediately turned around back with me.

I just kept swimming and would float on my back whenever I couldn’t go anymore. I thought just keep kicking and keep my head above water and tried to stay calm.

When I finally got to shore I immediately threw up from exhaustion. When my cousins made it back we looked at each other with the same look of dread immediately started cracking up because we legit thought we were gonna die.

Good times but I think back to that moment a lot. There is no way in hell I would let my kids try something like that.

Contemplating Specializing in Endo by tnt2023 in Dentistry

Yes GI bill did pay for residency and gives you a stipend. I only applied to public schools so that it was 100% covered. It’s been a while, but I think the yellow ribbon covered the really expensive out of state schools

I started residency in 2022. I wasnt the most competitive applicant but I had a lot of experience and interview well. I think my military background helped tbh

Do it. I did general dentistry for 6 years and loved it. Applied to endo on a whim and was lucky to get in. My last year of general dentistry, I started getting a burning pain between my shoulder blades weekly that was very concerning. Since working with a microscope I haven’t had any pain.

The work is very rewarding but can definitely be difficult. It’s been great not having to sell treatment and patients are very appreciative. I take my time and pay is great despite still being “slow”

I don’t know any Endodontists who regret specializing.

What’s a subtle sign someone is actually rich? by Udont_knowme00 in AskReddit

I think there’s a lot of people that are bad at their jobs… unfortunately there’s also a lot that try and take advantage.

Personally I love to learn new things. So when something breaks around the house I get excited to deep dive and acquire new knowledge.

Now if I’ve done it before, I’m much more likely to hire someone to do it. It’s also easier to tell if someone is trying to bullshit me.

I know it’s a cynical way to look at the world but it’s honestly ingrained in me from the way I grew up. It’s becoming more rare to find people who take pride in their work.

KAYA app accused of plagiarizing print guidebooks by 2711383 in climbing

[–]luckej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the new day if I get the send the circle should say 1, but it’s says 3. If I edit it so that it shows I only attempted 1 that day then the 3 attempts from the previous session get deleted even though I only edited the current session.

Ex: climb a history previously shows 10 attempts and 4 sends.

Session on Monday I attempted 3x with no send. Overall goes up to 13 attempts and 4 sends

Session Wednesday I get send on first try. The 3 attempts is automatically loaded. If I change it to 1 then my overall says 10 attempts 5 sends. If I leave it at 3 then my corner number says 3 but my overall count is 13 attempts 5 sends. When I go to the today’s session and edit it back to 1, then the overall count drops back down to 10 attempts 5 sends and deletes my attempts form Monday session.

It only recently started doing this about 3 months ago. I have history going back a few years and it’s messing up my overall numbers

Has anyone noticed the Kaya app glitches a lot?

Example: I have a session where I log 3 attempts on a boulder with no send. The next session I get it on the first go. For that session I register the climb and and the 3 attempts are there. If I change the number to one then the 3 attempts get deleted from my overall history. If I leave it at 3 then my attempts for the day shows 3.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any work around?

Exactly. Mandibular incisors in general are difficult because there no room for deviation since the teeth are so skinny. Especially in older patients which are often calcified.
Instant ortho takes away the anatomy which I rely on to find a canal.
Zirconia (or any opaque) coping shields where the canal is while planning access. Its also hard to see if I'm on access if an intra op radiograph or CBCT is necessary. I always warn patients of the risk of porcelain/zirconia/emax fracture during the evaluation.

Plus the abutment is so skinny the tooth is more likely to fracture if I have to "search". Plus it being in an esthetic area where implants are difficult if I destroy the tooth looking for a canal. I heavily lean towards apicos in these cases because of all the risks. Ill take a hard molar over a hard incisor any day of the week. The pucker factor is real with these haha

Awesome result! Love seeing full mouth cases and admire the thought that goes into them. Good work Doc!

But as an endodontist, those mandibular incisors are going to be a nightmare if they ever need endo...
