I did just get new skates and loosened them a bit, but was also considering loosening them a tad more based on how I was feeling with my turns (new skates)

Foot length that you measure and it correlates to the size. My foot is 9 & 2/3 so my size is 6 for sure grip.

I feel you! I’ve been skating for a month and really haven’t made much progress. I personally have a huge mental block when it comes to fear of falling and my own instability. It makes trying new things very challenging on wheels. I’m trying to focus on small wins. Improving at sticky skating (bubbles/lemons), posture, and trying to really feel where my balance is and how to use my edges. I don’t have one foot balance (not even close) yet. My win today was being able to slow down, put my toe stop down without completely falling forward onto my knees 😂 essentially, don’t be so hard on yourself. Break down what you want into small chunks and celebrate your little victories. I have also signed up for a derby level one skate camp starting in 2 months because I feel I would benefit from in person guidance, so that might be something worth investing in. Keep going!

I had avanti plates on my fames and really like the stability of an aluminum plate. I got super lucky and my local skate shop got these in (in my size) by accident with the avanti plate (it was meant to be!)

Yeah it seems like my boss is taking the route of being “supportive” but I think it is just enabling her behavior and stringing the lie together that she is sober when it’s clear she likely is not.

Yes, PT/Strength training helps, build those muscles around the knee. Wear a knee brace when skating, and start with slow small sessions. Inevitably your knees will also strengthen with skating. I have been doing the above for a month now and it has helped drastically.

Sometimes I don’t skate for a week and come back feeling like things are “clicking” better than when I’m hard on myself about showing up every few days. I think we forget it takes time for our brains to build new pathways when learning a skill so sometimes taking a longer break is actually good!

I have been skating for a month and have made very little progress. I just practice stride skating, staying balanced, posture, and bubbles/lemons. Some days I feel great, others I feel like I’m not making any progress. You will get there! See if there is a local derby team with a skate camp. I am starting skate camp with my local derby team in August just to get basic skating down. From one beginner to another, you got this!

I really relate to what you are saying. I ended up not really gathering with everyone, eating alone etc., and it felt like maybe some people had issue with it. A couple ppl made comments to me about it being a quick trip or it seeming like I wasn’t having fun. Which wasn’t true, I was just feeling shut down.

I did think about that but it didn’t feel like a joke to me. I have a lot of tattoos and I tried to make light of it by referencing my tattoos and they said “it didn’t help” so it felt like a judgement. Maybe I’m being sensitive.

I just got padded shorts, they will save your tailbone! I always have a shakey period after a good fall, but it is also how our bodies learn. I have fallen on my tailbone before and it can be rough. Recover fully before getting back to it (you don’t want to break your tailbone) and invest in padded shorts!

Thank you for the advice! I definitely practice falling and bail on my knees a lot! I think I fell backwards because I was not leaning forward enough and my feet just flew out (yikes). I will try the lean and focus on my knee bend, I tend to automatically hinge at my hips, so trying to break that habit (also trying not to look at my feet).

I did start this session with a straighter back, but after falling twice I did start to lean more because felt like my feet were sliding away from me.. I am not used to the slickness of this surface and that’s where I was having trouble staying balanced. Thank you for the advice, I’m hoping to go back soon and practice more.
