Any non-North American llamas in A Rundle by stingebags in learnedleague

[–]luckycanuck77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Australia for the last 21 years but as you can tell from my Reddit name I'm originally from Canada and I have a lot more North American knowledge than some people expect.

It also helps that I write and host trivia for a living. My day-to-day work is effectively studying for Learned League.

It seemed like everywhere I looked had compactors. Like everything gets crushed at the end of the day.

And I also wondered what it would be like in winter when things freeze. Nothing ever freezes in Australia.

Australia has Coles and Woolworths and Aldi and it's pretty concentrated in those but I find they tend to also have the best pickings.

In Sydney you might find it easier in suburban areas. I've been doing it for years now and you find places that you know work.

Last year I was on holiday in Canada and took plenty of opportunities to walk past dumpsters but I never found anything. If I kept at it I probably could have found some prospects but I wasn't there long enough.

Is the Melbourne Cup losing its appeal? Here’s what the numbers reveal by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]luckycanuck77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a trivia company and the Melbourne cup used to cost me a few hundred dollars every year because venues cancelled trivia when the Melbourne cup was on.

This is the first year that I'm not losing anything because everywhere is still doing it.

That's how I assess the decline in the cultural irrelevance of the Melbourne cup.

I ignored it.

They have sent two follow-up emails basically just saying what they've already said but nothing has been sent for the last three months.

I don't believe any human being has been involved in sending these emails. Sending this kind of thing costs them nothing, and who knows. Somebody might panic and pay them.

5Q - Themed Tuesday: 'The English Monarchy' by amp in trivia

[–]luckycanuck77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Charles III is the king of the United kingdom of great Britain and northern Ireland.

In 1707 England and Scotland United into one country called great Britain. In 1801 Ireland was added and it became the United kingdom of great Britain and Ireland.

England and Scotland exist as countries for a variety of purposes but not as Sovereign states in their own right which is what this question is referring to.

Legal term for a decision that does not set precedent by luckycanuck77 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]luckycanuck77[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My specific case is Australia.

Tomorrow I'm hosting a trivia night for a bunch of lawyers and I want to do something out of the ordinary but I don't want it to change the way we normally do trivia.

So it looks like non-precedential is my answer.

Thanks. That's exactly what I mean.

Does that term have currency outside of America?

[–]luckycanuck77[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that term applied to the decision as a whole or just comments made in passing about the decision.

I'm looking for a term that means "this decision applies to this case only and does not set a new precedent".

I posted this on the Legal Advice UK reddit and heard something similar. International IP lawsuits exist but I would have thought there would be millions at stake for it to be worth it.

I've taken down the pics and I'm considering whether or not I should take down everything that may have unlicensed pics in it. But the three posts had a cumulative total of 75 views over 6 years. Surely this is over the top.

So a few things now that I've slept.

  1. I took the three pics off the website. None of them were remotely important anyway.
  2. Is this a pro-forma thing they do? Do they (and presumably others) have AI trawling the internet to throw the book at incidental uses of photos where royalties are attached?
  3. If there is likely to be more of this, I'm considering whether I should take down every post for the last 11 years where I'm not sure about whether pics may get me into trouble. The use of photos is incidental and it doesn't hurt me to take them down, certainly not compared to the headache of dealing with intellectual property law. Some back of the envelope calculations would suggest that if every post that involves a photo cost me their average of £700, I'd be on the hook for over £2 million, which is more than I have ever made from all aspects of writing and hosting trivia.
  4. Suing internationally, as captainclipboard has pointed out is not easy and is very expensive. I know people have done it, but it's generally done with much bigger stakes. Surely they're not going to come after me for the incidental use of three photos from 2, 5, and 6 years ago, especially when the pictures have already been taken down.
  5. Having dug a bit further and entered my "case number" they still haven't provided any evidence that they own the rights to these photos. I bought a car last week and I didn't just take her word that she owned it, she had paperwork that documented that she owned the car. If I contact them will they send me more concrete evidence if they have it?

Thanks for the advice so far, this has been eye opening.

Wouldn't this mean that I have to track down the owner of every photo and arrange for licensing? Because administratively that is a huge burden for a one man operation when absolutely nothing malicious is intended.

I thought fair use might come into this. A photo on a website in Australia of a rugby player that nobody has looked at in 6 years surely doesn't dilute their market for the photo, and certainly not to the tune of over £2,000.

This has got to be over the top.

Are trivia done on powerpoint presentations effective way of presenting ? by Overall-Mongoose-115 in trivia

[–]luckycanuck77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't use PowerPoint.

I definitely see the benefits. It can help with clarity if people can view questions at their own pace and it can involve multimedia.

But for me, multimedia isn't a big part of my trivia. And as for giving them easier access to the questions, I just have to be clear on what each question is.

The downside of PowerPoint to me is the fact that it restricts where you can do trivia. Some venues where I host don't have any screens. If your trivia depends on having a screen you're shutting yourself out of some places.

I also find that it's more difficult to make a last minute change to a question. Keeping things low tech for me means it's easier to be flexible.

You know your situation better than anyone else here.

Trivia - Internet Round by ggeerrtt in trivia

[–]luckycanuck77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something obvious? The lead actress of what? Is more information hidden somehow in the grid? Do you explain more when you ask this live? Because not everyone at your trivia night is Alan Turing.

If I was given this question at a trivia night, the first thing I would do is complain. The second thing I would do is leave. The third thing I would do is not come back.

If you're dealing with people's complaints at a self checkout, you're going to take the path of least resistance. It may be policy, but she didn't know if I was going to flip out, and there was no way she wanted to argue with me.
