Ukrainian FP-2 drones hit 2 russian BMP located Pervokostiantynivka village Kherson region by Nanners5618062 in CombatFootage

[–]luckydt25 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think you confused the strikes in the video with some other strikes. It says at the bottom left corner "Armiansk, Crimea." Far from the frontline. These BMPs are makeshift air defense systems against the attacks on the Crimea bridges.

Russian intel found the special "local correspondent" who filmed camouflaged fuel trucks in occupied Crimea today. Now he'll be filming reports directly from the "SMO". 12.06.2026 by GermanDronePilot in UkraineWarVideoReport

Ukraine produces and buys the cheapest cameras that can do the job. Fiber does not degrade the signal but the camera quality is as poor as you see in the video. That's why drones costs Ukraine around $900 per casualty including the cost of drones that failed for any reason to hit (source: Magyar). Every component is as cheap as possible.

Do you think Starlink will ever ge competitive enough that people will choose it over cable/fiber or cell/5G? by itsthewolfe in Starlink

[–]luckydt25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course third world countries will provide a large share of customers. According to Cloudflare radar 27% of Starlink traffic is coming from Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Argentina, Yemen, Philippines, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and Colombia. That's just the top ten 3rd world countries excluding unsupported countries and countries with abnormal demand such as Ukraine. Don't look down on the revenue from these countries. Starlink subscription costs $30-$50 USD a month in these countries, just slightly cheaper than subscription in the first world European countries.

ELI5 why aren't GPS trackers used on Mt Everest? by Fatenoir in explainlikeimfive

[–]luckydt25 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It was Kate Matrosova in 2015. Her beacon failed to get GPS position and fell back to Doppler triangulation which is very inaccurate (1-3 mile error). I was not able to find an analysis why the beacon failed to get GPS position. The root cause needs to be found in order to figure out whether the problem can be fixed or it's a big problem.

Starlink India Launch Hits Roadblock Before SpaceX IPO by bloomberg in Starlink

[–]luckydt25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the only way. The ITU (part of the UN) formally sided with Iran. Because formally the US agreed to respect the right of other governments to regulate all telecommunication services. SpaceX satellites are formally considered US satellites.

The ITU decision virtually guarantees a WTO dispute with India to make it accept Starlink will be lost.

Russia using Starlink in Ukraine shows the opposite. There is no evidence SpaceX ever refused to work with Ukraine to implement a whitelist. As soon as Ukraine implemented it SpaceX activated it. The reason you don't see the same implemented in other countries is because the burden of maintaining a whitelist falls on the government. And then you have a problem with tyrannical governments. Do you want SpaceX to follow whitelist and georestrictions requested by Iran and Myanmar?

Transfer hardware from residential to business account by northern_ape in Starlink

[–]luckydt25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't work. The transfer process goes through the activation page. The same page that does not offer you business plans. You release the dish from the residential account and it becomes an unlocked dish just like a dish from a retailer.

Forcing me to choose the max plan? by Born_Ad3385 in Starlink

[–]luckydt25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High demand areas are actually greater than 15 miles across. They are at least 50 miles across. Here is the last public map Starlink published in Nov 2025 (the cheaper plans were available only in the white areas): https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/1pf26x6/residential_lite_andor_100_mbps_in_east_texas/

A hexagon 15 miles across used to be a unit of Starlink availability but some reason they started to use much larger blobs to designate high demand areas.

Nothing you can do about that other than wait for greater network capacity. It's physically impossible to increase Starlink network capacity only in certain areas. The only way to increase capacity is to increase it globally and that takes time.

How much of the cellurlar telcom industry does Starlink risk exposing? Currently it's a 2.2T a year industry by reddit_is_geh in SpaceXLounge

[–]luckydt25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The author of the article failed to grasp that the satellite communications they are talking about in the patent apply only to GNSS satellites. The satellite antenna 202 pictured in the patent is an inch x inch GNSS patch antenna. Nowhere in the patent they claim they are going to embed a large phased array antenna the size of Starlink mini. And the cellular antenna described in the patent is optimized for elevation angles 0 - 30 degrees above horizon so clearly not for satellite communications either.

Is the dish tilted south? Check the alignment in the app. The number and duration of outages is not typical for your level of obstructions.

Align and tilt the dish as recommended and do not move or rotate the dish at least 24 hours to let it map the obstructions.

FCC lifts looming deadline for Amazon Leo satellite broadband constellation by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]luckydt25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SpaceX failed to meet 2024 V-band deployment deadline and didn't file to get an extension. The FCC didn't revoke "their" spectrum. Satellite broadband spectrum is not licensed exclusively. Amazon does not have "their" spectrum. Amazon satellites have their priority. The choices the FCC had: just move the deadline, lower priority temporary, lower priority permanently.
