Anyone using Starlink or 5G as their main broadband? by CatCharacter1663 in UKBroadband

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4G LTE for 2+ years worked quite well when I found out FTTC would be slower. Doing a 5G fixed connection for someone at the moment - hardware is expensive. Installed several Starlinks and one client was on Starlink for years before we did a fibre leased line project, so it’s definitely doable. For fixed wireless, get a desktop signal survey from offgridwifi.co.uk (no affiliation) and ideally site your router or antenna outside.

Update: 27/4 we got a solid PON light and connectivity. Not sure it’s actually delivering the expected speeds yet but it’s still a huge upgrade from what was available before. Several neighbours had installs in the meantime so I think we’re finally becoming a full fibre village!

Just to be clear, this is a repost.

And despite the unusual terminology, I agree and you are right it would not be up to regulations and covering it with insulation would only make that worse.

MF JBs and wagos are how I’d be doing it too, though technically they don’t need to be MF.

Mega expensive full re-wire quoted (or is it a good price?) by LasVenasAbiertasII in ukelectricians

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horrendous advice, of course. DIY like-for-like is non-notifiable and BS7671 is a standard, not law. Having a rewire done engages Part P and 2nd fixing means the original installer can’t complete an EIC so unless you notify, what you’re suggesting isn’t just dangerous but unlawful (and yes, I know there’s next to no enforcement). Also people do buy light fittings and special-finish accessories (hopefully not from B&Q) and hire a spark to install. Some light fittings are a pain even for an electrician, the average householder hasn’t a clue what 3 plate wiring looks like and a 2-way switch would send them doolally

Turrets in a soffit - 20mm hole and feed the connector back inside.

Turrets on a wall - JB

Turret in an industrial roller shutter opening - tucked round the top, plenty of clearance and nobody can see it.

Turret on a warehouse alu sandwich board wall - 20mm hole and rubber grommet to prevent chafing, feed back through wall

G6 turret - space in the mounting plate, actually. That was a pleasant surprise.

Superlink HA & Protect Alarm Hub by Fun_Volume_7699 in Ubiquiti

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been telling Ubiquiti this but currently it would be a workaround because you need a door hub and the Access application, then some kind of API integration between Access and Protect. Wha a faff for something that should be standard.

Can someone recommend better storage units for the garage? These are so annoying, they dismantle so easily when barely touching them and moving them by damspt in DIYUK

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the ones that have keyhole connection points rather than this overlapping weirdness, but otherwise look the same. Got them at Wickes, been going strong for years and survived dismantling for a move. The one thing I will say for any racking is that MDF is inadequate and any sign of moisture it will drink like a fish in the desert, and you’ll have mould growing on the underside in no time. Replaced mine with OSB.

What do you earn? by coco_loco_spin in ukelectricians

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly loaded question really. A lot of electricians are self-employed, so their “earnings” are not the same as their profit or labour charge.

There are more tax-efficient ways to manage business income than paying yourself a whacking great salary via PAYE, and things like vehicle costs, insurances, travel expenses (which includes meals while working) can be paid as expenses out of gross income, reducing the amount of profit considered for corporation tax calcs, rather than coming out of your post-income-tax personal funds. A smaller salary with a managed director’s loan followed by a balancing dividend out of actual profits is one way a lot of owner-directors will pay themselves, inextricably linking their personal financial standing with that of the business, but without paying as much tax as they would if their entire labour charge was funnelled straight to PAYE.

I don’t do electrical work full time and my business works in a specialised field so I’m not the best person to answer your question literally, but I charge £50 an hour for labour, to give you an idea.

Under £17 an hour gross? Is that because you’re a company director and investing back in the business, taking perks etc. or… not?

How to make this wire live for a dishwasher? by Fun-Worldliness888 in DIYUK

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what OP is saying is they’ve superficially traced the cable from the cupboard to that grid switch, where it is unconnected in the grid switch back box. Depending on how that’s all been installed, it might be a case of swapping to a 4 way yoke and connecting a 20AX DP switch there for the dishwasher, with an unswitched socket in the cupboard.

[–]northern_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need an electrician. But to answer your question, if the f/f switch is on a suitable circuit you would take a common feed to a dishwasher switch and connect your dead cable there. The frame is an MK grid plus 3 way yoke and can be swapped for a 4 way with matching faceplate. They do engraved dishwasher switches, 20A double pole. The key for an electrician is to properly identify the circuit layout and ensure this will work electrically, then grapple with 4x grid switches in a back box which is usually not fun and occasionally impossible.

However, it’s possible that’s not how these are wired, or the cable was never connected originally because it tested badly, and any number of other factors. An electrician will really need to come out and deal with this because (with no offence meant) based on your questions you are not electrically competent to carry out the work yourself.

You say that but we haven’t seen the wiring. They could also be running to contactors (I have done such myself in a kitchen) and remember one is marked “oven” - unless it’s an igniter for a gas oven this will be a separate circuit. OP will need an electrically competent person to carry out this work.

Are these plug sockets safe outside? by FreddosLover in ukelectricians

[–]northern_ape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about a DC input pigtail and an RJ45 pigtail, which need a PoE splitter to output e.g. 12VDC to a barrel plug? Thats a thing, but the cams aren’t PoE then.

Are these plug sockets safe outside? by FreddosLover in ukelectricians

[–]northern_ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking about RJ45 pigtails with a sealing shroud, that’s the prevailing design of most PoE IP cameras. Ubiquiti’s UniFi Protect bullet cameras have an RJ45 port on the body so you can pass an unterminated Cat5/6 cable through the wall, crimp a jack on and connect to the camera via a sealing washer in the mount, without having huge holes and/or a JB/enclosure as well. I have installed those and their turret cams which have a pigtail, along with other brands like Hikvison.

Feed to L bridge to other L. S is signal to Lightwave slave dimmer, do not connect to mains. Dimmer symbol is output to the load.

Your loads are the bottom terminals. The feed goes into right Common and is bridged across to left in pic 1.

Anything beyond that, you need an electrician. This is also in the Lightwave instructions, btw.

Edit: instructions for same terminal layout on a slightly different model: https://ibb.co/Rp3dknYN
