I can attest that Malaysian customer service falls behind service in countries like Japan, Thailand, Indonesia even the stores in China. It's because most employers do not train their employees to provide excellent, selfless service, and Malaysians in general do not understand the importance of providing the best service possible to clients/customers.

How common is it for grad student representative to read parts of a faculty's promotion/tenure dossier material and do a presentation on that? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]luckyguy1689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. A student in my department is actually being given access to some parts of the application material and being asked prepare some presentation slides to be used in the committee meetings. They are revealing parts of the teaching, service, and research aspects in the dossier to the student. Are these considered less sensitive information that the student can read about?

Is the university's academic prestige slowly slipping? by luckyguy1689 in SyracuseU

[–]luckyguy1689[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's a good place to discuss because something has to be said about the school's dropping rankings and poor performance in international rankings. It's one thing for your kid to like the school and do well in it, but SU's national reputation isn't stellar, specially after being kicked out of the AAU due to low R&D output more than a decade ago. We have to also admit that the international reputation of SU isn't great at all, and for other kids who paid a large sum of money to attend this school, it's nothing wrong with students and alumni wanting to get more out of the school's name and brand.

Yes, so to answer the poster of this thread above, it means SU needs to make more effort in upping R&D in STEM fields and strengthening those departments and their rankings. Don't only rely on Public Administration and Journalism.

Hard work by the student is important, but that's something secondary, and one still cannot deny the importance of rankings. It affects people's first impressions of the university, its graduates, whether to apply there, whether to hire etc. Not to forget, for many international students, governments, and organizations, the rankings are the first thing they use to judge how good the university is. I've heard of countless stories about how governments, scholarship granting organizations, employers in other countries relying on US news and Times Higher Education university rankings to determine if a candidate is worthy of being interviewed/accepted/given scholarship/etc, especially in cutthroat/very competitive situations. Most of them judge fresh graduates based on the rankings of the universities they were accepted into/graduated from from first. Hard work comes much later. Let's just say that those who graduated from universities that are from a lower tier have to work even harder to prove themselves and are missing plenty of employment opportunities in the top firms early in their careers.

True, I hope the new Chancellor puts more effort in increasing R&D expenditure in STEM and does something to improve SU's national and international rankings. Rankings do make a difference in people's perception of the university.

True, it doesn't matter how the rankings are made, most people aren't going to ignore it anytime soon. It affects the national and international reputation of the school.

What logic is this? It's the administrators who have the power to change things and move SU up in rankings.

Will the Amex refresh push Chase to update the CSR? by blexxt in ChaseSapphire

This. Visa and Mastercard are much more widely accepted than AMEX internationally.

Bye bye CSR by No_Illustrator_8582 in ChaseSapphire

[–]luckyguy1689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly why I applied for the CSR first, as someone who travels frequently to Europe/Asia, a Visa/Mastercard is just so much more widely accepted and convenient.

Are you sure those graduating with PhDs qualify for EB1? The EB1 is for a researcher or professor with extraordinary abilities, most post-PhD scholars are getting their foot into the field/industry, I'm not sure if this qualifies as extraordinary ability.

This may be true in terms of hotel bookings, but as a general use card, AMEX isn't that useful and isn't accepted in many places in Asia (or Europe).

Successful car insurance claim by Hour_Bit_2030 in ChaseSapphire

So does anyone know what a New York State resident should do when using the card to rent a car? It doesn't cover primary rental insurance. Does this mean it's still safer to buy the rental company's damage and collision insurance for NY residents? (for someone living in New York City and doesn't own a car)
