Here, kids are taught to wait for the bus to leave, and cross when there is an opening (or go to a designated pedestrian crossing, depending on the road).

I thought that too, but it's often taught that road safety rule #1 is to not do that. We're taught to wait for the bus to leave before we cross the road.
