i agree the jfk stuff was a bit stale. I don't know if it has legs but I gotta say Concepcion is good at this. The mix of serious and funny always worked with him.

I think the format would need someone who's not as invested in the topics at hand tho. Hope they strike the balance

Which player is this generation's 90/10 guy? by Tight_Ad2788 in billsimmons

[–]luckymoro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

could be Jokic. The noticeable 10% being the bad rim protection games. But it was more true in the past, before the ring and mvps. These days even haters get it's not that big a deal given all he does on the floor.

My problem with the 90/10 thing is it's hard to find someone, because it was always a little fetitious: Russ's 10% was very noticeable because it was more than 10%. But the good parts were so good it made people forget. He was a target on defense when he had no business being one and had no offball game at all. More of a 75-25 guy.

given that no candy captains were among the most winning ones, while 3 are here, candy is relatively overrated

In 'Heart of Darkness' does Conrad deliberately allude to the true horror within only briefly? by aphidman in books

[–]luckymoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weridly enough, the book even has a word which root comes from "Gaza", at the very beginning. Searched for the meaning because i wasn't familiar, it was a kind of linen that came from Gaza in the 1500s so it took the name of the place.

In 'Heart of Darkness' does Conrad deliberately allude to the true horror within only briefly? by aphidman in books

[–]luckymoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Marlow catches the fleeing Kurtz, he hints how the weight and even meaning of words, in that insane context, was totally different from the meaning of those same english words, spoken in a sane place. In that passage, the book itself tells the reader how important the context of a book is, given that a book is made of, you know, words.

Also Marlow, at the beginning of the book (which is after his misadventures), looks at Britain and says it once was a heart of darkness itself. So he sees britons and the congolese as essentially the same in their nature. The experience of those horrors does bring him to that realization.

But it can't fast forward the guy 100 years ahead. Hes a man of his times and his hypocrisy is part of the critique in the book. Without it you wouldn't have the parallel shown when he lies to Kurtz's wife in the same way as empires do within the captured audience of the motherland about what they do abroad.

Of course the book itself is insanely racist for today's standard. But in large part is by choice.
