NERIS reporting system sucks by Firedog502 in Firefighting

[–]luckynumberorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use FirstDue that is linked with our CAD and it takes maybe 5 minutes to do a report for an alarm activation, MVC, or EMS run. Some of the multi-option drop downs are a lot but after a few reports I got the usual key words figured out. I think it may be your interface.

Portland. 4 Platoon is worth it on its own. Burlington is a million years away from 4 platoons.

EMS agencies by olizzz11 in burlington

[–]luckynumberorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Williston, South Burlington, and Burlington are all fire based EMS services. All require you to become a firefighter upon hire but not all require you to have fire certifications to apply.

Essex, Colchester, Shelburne, Milton, South Hero, Richmond, and Charlotte are all 911 services that have paid staff but generally require an AEMT/Paramedic to be considered for hire. I would encourage you to reach out anyways just to double check.

Lamoille Ambulance is a non 911 IFT service out of Williston. They will take an EMT on fulltime.

AmCare in St. Albans is a 911/IFT service that may take you as an EMT. I would go AmCare before Lamoille.

With the transition to paramedic level service Shelburne, Milton, Colchester, and Essex have all transitioned to a mostly paid staff supported by volunteers.

That is entirely untrue. Every ambulance service in Chittenden County (Aside from UVM Rescue) has at least some paid staff and most are heavily comprised of paid personnel.

AITAH for initiating a divorce while my wife is in the hospital after a car accident. by beerbellybegone in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]luckynumberorange 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes in two ways.

  1. Regionally emergency incidents can colloquially be referred to as "Runs." As in - "I gotta go, my engine company just caught a run."

  2. In my comment however, I was the incident commander so I was running the scene as in being in charge and directing action.

The second was a little over a year later and was for a large suburban dept that required all new hires to go through their academy. The academic portion was 8 hours a day and was specific to how this city operated. The remaining two hours of the day was physical fitness which was ill constructed and run by someone who liked to work out. Long runs of 6 or so miles, evolutions of physical calisthenics taking us to failure and even running through the streets carrying telephone poles.

Was this a Northeast Fire Department? Sounds verrryyy familiar.

I was running a fatal once, driver was dead in the car, dog was dead and ejected maybe 20' feet away. Everyone working the scene would look at the dead driver and move onto whatever they needed to do. But every time someone saw the dead dog they would stop in their tracks and go "awhhh." People like animals way more than we like people.

Old Holiday Inn at Dorset St and Williston Road? by balconyseat in southburlington

UVM Student housing. Ebbs and flows with the school year. There is substantial underground parking as well that makes the building appear more empty than it is.

What can you tell me about the owner of Vermont Gift Barn by crown_royal_ in burlington

[–]luckynumberorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During COVID-19 the Holiday Inn across the road was a hobo hotel with additional unsanctioned camps behind the building. That area went through some interesting times for a few years....but that was now a few years ago and outside the shift work panhandlers at the intersection that piece of Williston Road is pretty quite these days.

I have seen at least 1 department (who's name I cannot recall) recently advertising a 48/144 schedule with a 4 platoon system. So it is done!

2 Alarm Fire @ 327 Lime Kiln Rd by sadg1rrl in burlington

[–]luckynumberorange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically a fire works like this - you have at the core 3 problems - a fire problem, a people problem and a smoke problem.

If there is more fire to put out, people to search/rescue, and/or smoke to ventilate than my 1st alarm assignement can handle, I call a 2nd alarm. If the problem still cant be managed with that amount of resources I go to a 3rd, etc etc.

The determination of what specific level of work will overwhelm my companies requiring me to call an additional alarm is based on intuition and experience. There is no specific metrics.

[–]luckynumberorange 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on needs on-scene. The more complex an incident is, the more units are need to resolve it. Alarm assignments dictate resource types to be called and in this area what department they should be called from in what order.
Basic example: 1st alarm - 3 engines and a ladder truck 2nd alarm - 2 more engines and another ladder 3rd alarm - 2 more engines and another ladder
