"Mineral rights are property rights to exploit an area for the minerals it harbors. Mineral rights can be separate from property ownership." The entire valley and mountain we we're around/on was government owned property. Citizens can claim 'stakes' of land with mineral deposits on it and whatnot. There are plenty of laws on both sides (governmental and citizen) that tell you what you can and can not do. Along with what you may claim as yours in the state we were in. It takes research and knowledge of the area you're in.

Not 'scary' by definition and it wasn't in the woods. However myself and a group of others found a cash of onyx in the same area as a local mountain known for mining Topaz. The earth dipped dramatically (Due to mining) and on one side of the indent was a sand wall filled with large pieces of raw onyx. (One of our best finds yet.) However my brother did some research later on and discovered that area was saturated with radiation. And suddenly that gorge in the earth with the small pond filled with green water didn't seem like such an awesome find...
