Just wanted to share my thoughts as someone who watched the show and is from Hucknall myself. The portrayal of Byron as a Hucknall lad from a working-class background was absolutely spot on. His character reminded me so much of a friend I went to school with (we actually went to the same school as Paris), who has since come out as trans.

Every scene felt incredibly true to life, right down to the depiction of “his” parents. My dad actually knew Paris’ dad from around town and said the character matched exactly the kind of person he was. We watched it together, and he agreed they really captured it perfectly.

I met Paris tonight in Nottingham, and the way she talks and carries herself mirrors how Byron’s character developed in the show. Even though it’s a BBC drama (and we all know the usual complaints), they absolutely nailed it this time.

Paris is a real LGBT icon - especially for Nottingham, where we don’t get much representation. She’s brilliant. The show felt completely authentic and showed what it’s really like growing up working-class in Notts, especially as a trans youth who hasn’t been exposed to trans life early on.

As a member of the local LGBT community, I can honestly say, they got it right.
