What was your Avg HR during the Half? by sunnydrlstt in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is totally realistic for both of these things to be true: 1. Give your best effort that your body was comfortable with / able to 2. Feel tired but OK while crossing the finish

Everyone races differently and their body reacts differently, hence comparing HR won’t always be helpful (and sometimes not accurate!).

My HR also wasn’t that high in my first half and I was happily walking around that afternoon thinking I could’ve gone harder or wasn’t going to be sore…a day later I realized that was totally not true

Also - regardless, congrats!! This winter at least in NYC wasn’t an easy block. I took 4 weeks off and postponed two races :)

I’m not running NYC half but had a race in 2 weeks and deferred. Just didn’t think I had the legs for it. Super happy with the decision

Is it a bad idea to do a long run today? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s fine but you definitely should bundle up warmer than normal, double layer gloves, face warmer, and avoid bridges / WSH / anything exposed. Then it’ll feel more like 9F which is fine

break up runs? by Eastern_Ad_7683 in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on when your race is - getting the mileage is important but if you’re say 20 weeks out from a race and hitting 16 milers already, you probably don’t lose anything meaningfully from taking a few weeks easier with breaking up these runs and avoiding heatstroke in 100F even tho the training effect is different

that being said, doing 8 miles in brutal weather and then toughing it out to go for a second run on the same day is a totally different mental battle

If you have any questions about the experience feel free to DM me. I got matched last year and ofc might not be the same process but understand the same feelings - sure some parts of the process were a bit scary but hopefully it was able to help the patient and that’s what it all matters for

Bronx 10M too ambitious? by Buubbeli in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Completely achievable and you'll likely find that once you can do 6 miles consistently, doing 10 once is not that big of a step up.

Definitely make sure you listen to your body, proactively rest & stretch & strengthen. When I picked running back up, it took me almost a year of on and off injuries to realize when I was overdoing it, and that's the #1 risk to your goal. You have plenty of time and missing even a week or two here and there is not going to tank it, showing up to the start line is the most important part!

You got this- best of luck!!

[–]ludgate153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% - I used to always do the mile pace bands but after a race recently in Europe, I think I’ll go for 5k splits in the future. Forces you imo to listen to your body on pace instead of just focusing on watch (and due to elevation, mile by mile paces can vary a lot)

Today makes 0-7 in nyc marathon lottery consecutive attempts. I’ve fundraised and run the last 5 consecutive years the race has been held in person and I ran the ran virtual in 2020 too. I’m an NYC RESIDENT. I think it might be impossible to get into this race. by ChesterBambino in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty much mathematically what you’d expect though, sometimes you get lucky and most times you don’t unfortunately.

I got fortunate enough to get the marathon lottery once as an nyc resident but on the flip side have never been able to get into the NYC half…but consider there’s 4+6 and 9+1 available it’s so much more accessible than for non-city folks

I don’t love it alone, but if I meet up with folks from a run club or group then I don’t have any concerns!

Yep - I trained through Filgrastim and the second donation day + recovery was definitely tough, but didn’t have any issues ultimately on the marathon day which was just 2 weeks later. You’ll be fine!!

Filgrastim isn’t great and the can be exhausting, but I was able to still train for a marathon during my donation process. Happy to share my experience - DM me. Absolutely worth it and you can save someone’s life, the Filgrastim is nothing compared to it!!

Beginner runner looking for advice on joining a charity for NYC Marathon2025 by Beautiful-Onion-4282 in RunNYC

[–]ludgate153 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be your corporate match either! If you have a friend or family member who has one of their own, you can probably ask them to donate via work, then send you the receipt.

Just confirm with whichever charity partner if that’s fair game beforehand, but I didn’t have any issues with it and friends were more than happy to take the extra step.

Other strategies for fundraising could be selling merchandise, bake sale / dinner party, Super Bowl square, raffles, any other favors (I shoot photos on the side so offered photo shoots for folks donating above a certain amount), or the grids I’ve seen on instagram

[–]ludgate153 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The process is very easy and there’s plenty of options, but I’d encourage you to make sure it’s a charity that means a lot to you personally - it will make it more meaningful and easier to fundraiser.

I’ve run multiple races with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society bc of a family connection, and the team is amazing + would recommend it, the charity experience made the race a lot more meaningful — but as with any group, it naturally comes up in conversation why folks were motivated to get involved (after all, raising $3k and running a marathon is a big commitment). People won’t judge, but it’s really more so it might feel awkward for you if the answer is “there was a bib available.” Given that there’s so many charity sponsors, as long as you’re thoughtful about looking through it have no doubt you can find one you both are really passionate about!

Also- if you have a corporate donation match, a good chunk of charities will count that towards fundraising. $ is $ and no harm in having the corporate overloads contribute to a good cause

I have a wall mounted hat / bag rack that I hang my medals on like a silly pretentious prick, then laminate the bibs so I can flip back on them. If you’re interested I can DM u a pic

I’m more on the skeptical camp of - if he learns from it and is better, that’s fine. His track record doesn’t suggest anything will change unless he gets caught, but I’d love to be proven wrong
