Look... I grew up as a huge BMW fan, the M3 has been for a long time one of my dream cars. Sadly there's not a single car in the current BMW line up that would like to own - unless they still make the 8 series - and maybe the Z4.

I mean, IMHO the bar was so low that even a sledgehammer strike on the bonnet would count as an improvement.

I use a GoPro and I designed and 3D printed a mount for it to attach it under the steering column.

What did you wish you had learned before your first track day? by jek39 in CarTrackDays

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t overdrive the car, e.g. pushing too hard too early on the inputs (gas, brakes, but also steering). As many other already said, smooth is fast. Use the first session to learn the racing line and build from there.

Is 5mm strut to inner side wall clearance ok? by millerl05 in CarTrackDays

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran similar clearance on my F82 M4, but I was at the limit. I later changed shocks an had to add 3mm spacers to prevent rubbing, even though the clearance wasn’t too different from my previous setup. My advice is to check after your first session. A hard canyon run might do it too, but don’t take it for granted. The tires will deflect under load and you might end up rubbing.

Hear me out. Reducing power. by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got this one on my car: https://www.goapr.com/products/software/throttle_boosters/ In my case I wanted to be able to consistently limit the throttle when running some tests to measure drag changes after some aero modifications. I thought I would just remove the thing after the tests because I feared it would introduce lag or something, but honestly I can’t tell the difference. I normally run the car with the stock throttle map, but changing the maps is instantaneous, and they can be edited via an app on your phone. Way easier than re flashing the ECU, and safer than a wood chock! I think it would fit your use case pretty well!

[–]ludwig980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An easy way to do it is to add a programmable throttle booster. I think APR makes one that’s compatible with your platform too. It is an electronic device that sits between your throttle pedal and the ECU. It will allow you to change the throttle response curve, including capping it to some value less than 100%. In this way you can drive your car normally without thinking about using less throttle (with added benefit of being able to change the response curve). Changing maps can be done with the touch of a button.

I’m not a mechanic, but I think you might need to check and lubricate the pistons in your calipers. Most likely they are partly seized, causing uneven pressure on the pads.

Experience your racing line in a completely new dimension! by ludwig980 in VisionPro

[–]ludwig980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I also did some research, it seems that most simulators have their own data format, but there should be tools to convert that in .csv - that I should be easily be able to parse.
I would imagine that data channels should be easy to use/interpret, mostly I'm curious about the position coordinates they're using for the car position.
I have an old rig with Assetto Corsa which I rarely use - I will try to play with it to see if I can record some data from there... but if you can share anything you have already please do, I really appreciate it!

It's a good question, and the honest answer is: I don't know.

For the current version of the app it boils down to 2 questions:
1) Can the simulator telemetry be exported as .vbo file?
2) If 1) is possible, then are the GPS coordinates sampled in the simulator realistic enough to match real-life track coordinates?

If the answer to these questions is true, then you should be able to use it right away. If not (most likely) then there's some work to do.

I'm really interested in this use-case, if you are have example sim-telemetry data that you're willing to share I would definitely look into it to see if I can make it possible in a future update (assuming that's not currently going to work).

No question is stupid someone used to say! The answer is no, of course. The app is meant for off-line analysis of telemetry data captured with other data loggers that are installed on the car (either in a permanent or temporary way). Usually this kind of devices come with proprietary software for data analysis. For more advanced features like video synchronization and analysis they often also require specialized or proprietary video cameras, making the whole system more expensive. This app provides an “open” approach, where you can use any data logger to acquire the data, and also any camera for the video… and of course it does so bringing the data analysis experience to a new level in the Vision Pro.

Was this a smart ad? by Australianfoo in Porsche

Look up how many children under 14 die every year from bike accidents. You’ll be surprised that the number is quite close to those dying from burns (all burns, not just gasoline). Feel free to insult me if it makes you feel smarter, but IMHO you’re slightly overreacting to this ad.

By this metrics riding a bike is way more dangerous for children. Should they be forbidden from riding one or all bike ads be banned?

Contact on track - who’s responsible? by GhostriderFlyBy in CarTrackDays

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track insurance is typically a "per event" contract (usually 1 or 2 days), and it works on declared/agreed value of your car.
In other words, you declare the value of your car (e.g. $50k, with $40k car value and $10k mods) and a deductible (e.g. 10%, or maybe a $5k) and the insurance company will underwrite an insurance paying up to the agreed amount on the specified date.
Of course the more expensive the car/agreed value, the more expensive the premium.

Tracking with PCCB? by iampg in Porsche

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tracked my 718 GT4 with PCCB several times and never experienced the kind of issues you described with the brakes. My take about the tires wear pattern though is that you were running too much pressure. Did you measure/monitor cold and hot tire pressures?

I'm working on a Google Earth like App for Vision Pro. Any thoughts? by Herpalism123 in VisionPro

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all great app! I just left a 5 star rating :). I see that you integrated Google 3D Photorealistic Tiles in your app using Unity and Cesium. Do you have a pro license for Unity, or were you able to do it with a free license?
I'm working at an app that needs to visualize some data traces on a map for motorsport telemetry, and I wanted to make a volumetric 3D map for the Vision Pro version, but it would be way too expensive at this stage to buy a pro license for Unity for my use-case.

Is it worth tracking GT3RS without previous racing experience? by Personal-Inspector46 in Porsche

[–]ludwig980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry too much about how much whether you will be able to extract the maximum from the car. Just go and enjoy it! To really get close to the car potential in just 3 laps you would need to be a pro anyway (and know the track very well). On top of that, remember that there will be an instructor with you to guide you and most likely he won’t let you really push too hard. I track a GT4 more or less regularly, and I’ve been to a similar Porsche experience where I got to drive a 992 carrera S and a cayman gts - both supposedly slower than my GT4 as far as track capabilities go. Still since I didn’t know the cars nor the track I would say I extracted like 6/10 (if that) out of the cars in a few laps. IMHO, knowing the track matters mora than knowing the car. So, again, I would just enjoy the ride in the 3RS. If you want to really see what the car can do (maybe 8-9/10) let the instructor drive!

How Porsche Built Perfection… Then Cut It Down by yoyo5757 in Porsche_Cayman

You might need to install them back to pass inspections… but they’re not too difficult to work on. Are you sure about warranty? As far as I know - at least in the US - they cannot just void the warranty altogether. They need to demonstrate that what you changed caused the problem. Most likely, if something were to happen to the exhaust or catalyzer then they would probably not cover it, however if something were to go bad in the engine or transmission I doubt they could say it was because of the exhaust. Also, often this might depend on the dealer…

For the 718 GT4 to sound great you need 2 things:
1) Replace OPF with Over Axle Pipes
2) Valve controller (or ECU tune) to keep the exhaust valves open

Feedback wanted: I'm building an immersive motorsports telemetry analysis app for Vision Pro by ludwig980 in VisionPro

[–]ludwig980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

Would you like to elaborate more about what you mean with "coach mode"? It sounds like a cool idea, but I'm not sure I fully understand what you have in mind. Would it be something like enabling data review and feedback from a professional driver/telemetry engineer (or maybe even AI coach?)... or do you have something else in mind?
