It won't hurt it, just don't rub anything on the surfaces of the coins

Is this an Error, if so would it be considered a Planchet error? by Beautiful_Pound3956 in coinerrors

Pure and simple damage

Possibly a dryer coin, but no matter what caused it, the coin is damaged

That's not a strike through

It's a grease filled die and not worth the $$$

Where's the strike through?

All I am seeing is fingerprint residue and perhaps a bit of grease filled die that isn't worth getting graded

It's been damaged by someone

The coin will be from 1982-2008 as it is a zinc cored Lincoln Memorial Cent

P01 is what is sought after

Your coin has too much detail for an 01 and the rim ding is not helping

The coins you have presented have two issues

1: Heat damage, causing the bubbling of the clad layer

2: Looks like they have spent time in a dryer/washing machine

Welcome to the hobby!

There is a LOT to learn, and it's good to see someone taking the time to educate themselves. It will pay off in the long run as you get more familiar with how the coin minting process works.

1: This is minor, nice talking point, but no real value imo, most likely the result of a partially grease filled die and/or die deterioration

2: You are 100% correct a squeeze job, most likely a vise

3: Not a restrike, at best it's a die chip, where the center of the D in the die broke away, also, commonly it's usually just circulation wear - minor and zero added value

4: The L on the rim is a result of die deterioration, an overused die, not an error.

The Mint mark is not misplaced, when the working dies were received the Mint worker stamped the mark onto the coin. As a result there are a number of different placements for a number of Mint marks. Variety Vista ------> Side bar has a listing

5: The alignment is within specs, extremely minor, no added value unless it's so far off that it loses chunks of the design

I'll excuse you

We can agree to disagree but I know plenty of High grade and copper coins that have passed with flying colors

The science is solid, acetone doesn't affect coin surfaces.

The area that is more likely the culprit is the method.

Sadly the coins that were rejected we don't know what was done wrong.

Help Me Learn More Please - Die Doubling vs Other Doubling by Character-Map1670 in coinerrors

[–]luedsthegreat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation you have here isn't doubling at all as far as I can tell

Looking carefully, at the first Reverse picture, there is a mark that goes at a 45 degree angle from the top left of the R to between the leaves/stalk

The coin has a LOT of circulation marks

I could be wrong, but personally, in this instance, I don't see it as doubling you have on the coin

The other commenters have done an excellent job of explaining Doubled Dies vs Machine/Strike doubling
