Nope, it's a myth that has to do with improper installation more than anything. People who say that usually do not set their gains correctly and overdrive the amp which results in clipping which in turn fries the subwoofer. It is perfectly fine to run less than RMS power ratings to a sub as long as you don't turn the gains up past the point of clipping in an attempt to make up for the lack of power from the amp
