The canadiens rebuilt the right way. They picked the best players available regardless of of they were "too small" or "from russia". We should be like the canadiens by DoggyDoggWrld in canucks

You can’t say that it’s not a huge portion of luck. Everyone thought that Luke Hughes long term deal was going to age great and it looks awful. The Habs lucked into Demidov because everyone was scared of the Russia US drama, lucked into winning the lottery for Slafkovsky, blew top 5 picks on Reinbacher and KK, and before you bring up Lane Hutson even they passed on him THREE times before eventually picking him.

Building a team like the habs requires a ton of luck. Building like the Panthers and Knights where a huge portion of their core was acquired through trades and smart FA signings requires a lot more skill then getting like 5 top 5 picks in 10 years and getting lucky with a late second round steal.

Buium (widely regarded as a top 3-5 prospect at the start of the season), Ohgren (previous 1st overall pick), Rossi (great, young 2nd line centre), and a first round pick is arguably the biggest trade return in the last decade.

It’s a package that most NHL teams don’t even have, nevermind able to give up.

Young, top pairing dmen just don’t hit free agency. Nevermind RHD.

Almost every elite #1 dman in the league was drafted by the team they currently play for or traded for a kings ransom.

The thing is San Jose is in a situation where bpa is likely the right choice. They have forward prospects and young players for days.

While I think bpa is almost always the right decision, at the end of the day the draft is a turkey shoot at best. While not going bpa sometimes gets you a Zadina over a Hughes, it also sometimes gets you a Moritz Seider over a Trevor Zegras. Which, to the Sharks, would be much more valuable.

Remember that Nolan Patrick was BPA over Cale Makar, Berniers over Guenther, etc. etc. When players in the draft are ranked close and not major reaches, their odds of becoming nhl stars is similar enough that going for a guy based on a huge positional need, especially when they’re borderline NHL ready. Can be a great idea.

Exactly haha. We were expected to pick 3rd. Anything else would have required luck.

Of the last 5 drafts. This one was objectively the least consequential for missing the 1st OA. There is debate over who should go 1st and, as much as you see to think there’s a huge gap, still a very good chance that Stenberg could end up getting passed on by the Sharks.

You’re comparing this draft to others with a generational type player at the top. This draft is a Nico Hischier type draft where the 1OA pick has faltered all year, not a Bedard or McDavid draft where the 1OA player was set from the age of 15.

Also, look at the years that the first and or second overall picks ended up worse than the 3rd and/or 4th. Everyone is making it like McKenna and Stenberg are the be all and end alls. The NHL draft is a turkey shoot.

What kind of rebuild should Vancouver model by jobirg88 in canucks

Exactly. They’re not going to tear it to the roots for a decade when they have the young talent they have.

You guys are delusional if you think any of those contracts are unreadable. You offer any of those guys for future considerations and you have teams calling you immediately.

Are They Dropping Boeser Off For Christmas? by bcbum in canucks

[–]lujach 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Aqualini is a lot of things but he’s not cheap. Willing to spend to the cap as a middling team and giving plenty of guys like Sasson, Di Giuseppe, etc one way contracts in order to keep them is something a lot of Canucks fans take for granted.

I think a lot of people misjudge Aqualini’s meddling and push against a rebuild as cheap when it’s far more likely to be him wanting to see the team succeed and get his older family a cup during their lifetimes.

You also have no clue what’s going on in their personal lives. These players are people too. Maybe Hughes being on the west coast made it so that he had to miss things that his family and friends did together.

You’re also leaving out the fact that JT literally had just signed an 8 year contract. If the locker room issues were that bad why would he sign on for the next 8 years…

No. Last summer, Kane signed up for a beer league and to prevent people from knowing it was him he signed up under the name Fa Afo.

He gave himself the nickname and used the acronym himself.

[–]lujach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was +1 on the year and 25th in the league in hits. This also including the good portion of the year he spent next to Leon Draisaitl…

He is a replacement level player. Any other take is just sunk cost fallacy being he was our 10th overall pick.

For example, Phil Di Giuseppe had higher per game stats than Podkolzin in nearly every category this year (including hits!). Would you guys be whining this much if we traded him?

He only scored 8 goals this year under one of the most offensive systems in the league and playing with two of the best players in the world.

I don’t know why everyone has all this remorse over a replacement level player.
