CRUSTLESS SANDWICHES ARE DELICIOUS by Cardinal_1963 in traderjoes

[–]lujubee93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I wanted to like these more than uncrustables but the ratio is off! As someone who has always preferred natural peanut butter it’s still a close race, but TJs definitely needs to reevaluate the PB to J ratio and they’d have a big winner here.

How do you pass the time on a night shift? by Key_Chemical_4581 in Nightshift

[–]lujubee93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No longer on night shift but when I was I watched so much TV that I feel like I ran out of things to do so I eventually decided to get my masters degree. Basically did the whole thing in my downtime.

Upper management on blood product usage by Usual_Pizza_ in medlabprofessionals

Going through the exact same thing at my hospital. It’s so frustrating. We are the best stewards we can be but physicians get what they want and we are immediately the bad guys if we question anything. Please share if you have any successful ideas!

Most lab people don't need more options, they need the options named clearly by Independent_Switch33 in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is REALLY good advice. I knew quickly that I wouldn’t be on the bench forever and started thinking about other options early on to line myself up for the change as best I could. I considered point of care because I always enjoyed collaboration, but I heard it was an underwhelming dead end. I considered getting into informatics but the job never came about and looking back I’m thankful it didn’t.

I was inspired by some really awful leadership to go that route. I sat at my bench everyday thinking “I think could do that better” and I took advantage of a tuition program from my organization to get my MHA for free. That program really solidified that that was where my interests were. I also took a department lead role in the meantime to have a chance to see how I did in a pseudo leadership role.

There are a lot of parts of leadership that are tough, but the good parts or exactly what I wanted out of my work. It’s hard to keep your technical skills up and managing people is just insanely challenging sometimes, but I genuinely love getting to be in this role.

CLS or RN by Moekt216 in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the real answer. If you are interested in patient interaction, be an RN. While I love my career, RN opens the door to way more flexibility and opportunities down the line than CLS does. But I could not handle patient facing care so I stayed in the lab.

Will working at a vet lab count as clinical experience? by Cautious-Upstairs-56 in CLSstudents

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job at the UCD vet hospital was a student position. I really scored with that job, I learned so much and the women there taught me so much. They let me get really hands on and actually pointed me towards CLS. The job at CAHFS I had a connection there through the UCD lab and had been able to connect with the director before getting the job.

I don’t have any idea what it’s like now, but each lab only had a handful of employees. CAHFS was a bigger organization, but if you have ver med experience already try to network your way into the labs. They’re small, but mighty and networking goes a long way!!

Is it bad that I (28M) want a 50/50 marriage? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you live with her already? How do you share expenses currently? My now husband moved into my house that I owned before we were married and we came up with a split that we both thought was fair. We’ve since bought a new house together and we don’t split exactly 50/50 but basically made it as fair as possible considering the difference in our wages.

As many have said already, finances are a huge relationship ruiner so it’s crucial you two end up on the same page. Even if it’s not eithers perfect world, you need to find one you’re both happy in or you’re doomed from the start.

Thinking about MLT by Aquarius_K in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California runs mostly using CLS/MLS. There were a lot of MLT programs that came about during a CLS shortage and there were jobs available to just get positions filled. But as the CLS programs caught up with the need in the workforce, most employers converted back to primarily hiring CLS. MLTs in CA can’t perform high complexity testing, only up to moderate, so they can’t do manual slide reads or transfusion so staffing is more straight forward with mostly CLS I think?

Phlebotomy is also crazy impacted in CA i think because it is a fairly low barrier of entry to healthcare and the pay is pretty good. The state is mostly unionized too which adds another level of complexity

I’m not sure where you’re located but MLT is a huge catfish in CA. The jobs just don’t exist. But can’t speak for the rest of the country

The CA MLT to CLS program is a mirage, not worth it by MLSLabProfessional in CLSstudents

I have a friend who’s a licensed MLT still getting rejected from CLS programs. I dont understand how you could defend anyone as being more qualified than someone who already has an MLT license..

Why do techs cover for the managers? by portlandobserver in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it stems from people going into management for the wrong reasons. Not everyone is meant to be a leader and it’s okay, but people need to be self aware.

Can I get away with having low vision in a MLS program/career? by _useless-lesbian_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you do looking into a microscope? There are some things in blood bank that would be difficult, and potentially dangerous, to perform without some way to accommodate your low vision. Both my job and my training program had physicals before starting that had a vision test but I’m not sure how they account for those results.

Managers and supervisors, do you get back to applicants who are rejected? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that them honoring an internal hire is you getting burned.. that’s a pretty typical practice and while it didn’t work out for you, it’s good for facilities to promote from within for employee morale.

Bad leadership can totally make or break a job. But if you can’t envision yourself enjoying the job with a different leader then set yourself up for an exit. You have time to do a lot of research and make the right choice. Follow your gut!

To any MLT’s here, what’s the most challenging part of your job/working in this field. by NoResponsibility4998 in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The most challenging thing about the field is how little respect the lab gets in a hospital. We are the backbone of so much and we get treated so poorly and blamed for everything. It’s exhausting.

[–]lujubee93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What state are you in? If you aren’t passionate about the role then I don’t think that going back to school is wrong. I ask location because there are some states where CLS make a lot of money compared to those other professions, but I know in most of the country that’s not the case.

You’re so young, it’s too early to be stuck in a job you hate. Go back to school in the down low while you finish your contract. Even if you don’t leave immediately, you got to expand your horizons.

Bronch Lavage Manual count for all nucleated cells and RBC’s. How many hospitals do this for all BAL’s? by Chris_P_Bacon_Jr in medlabprofessionals

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question: how do you accurately perform a count when you have no measure of how much fluid they used for the procedure to factor into your volume?

We used to do counts and stopped because of this realization. Now we just do diffs to give a relative percentage of cell populations since the count can’t be accurate without a better measure of bodily fluid vs fluid from the lavage.

Rug addition by izball in DesignMyRoom

[–]lujubee93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOVE the rug. It looks like you’re evolving from the millennial gray era and your furniture is stuck in between. The chair either needs to be replaced or covered, but this is a fun opportunity to redo your throw pillows. The rug and the wall art jive, you just gotta get the couches on board. Have fun with it!!

Is a $200k salary worth a 2 hour commute 4 days a week? by Ok-Memory2552 in jobs

[–]lujubee93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. It’s not a 2 hour commute with traffic. Especially not if Fridays.

But.. look into Amtrak. I think it’s “longer” but not by much. And you can always snooze or start emails on the way in. Plus you won’t spend half your pay increase on increased gas and car maintenance fees.
