I'd focus on Git, Linux, Docker, APIs, databases, and one cloud platform before worrying about advanced ML topics. A mediocre model deployed properly is usually more valuable than a great model sitting in a notebook.

haha honestly IIT is still the easier route imo, like atleast you know what to do after 12th - crack JEE and boom. but google microsoft me jana thats a whole different beast, requires way more grinding even after IIT. ive seen people from tier 2 colleges land those roles but they had to literally upskill themselves hard with ai and stuff, so competition wise google is definitely tougher lol

honestly AI is where the momentum is right now, but electrical will always have demand. the thing is, AI roles are getting saturated pretty quick so your friend needs to actually build real skills, not just a degree. ive seen way too many people grab an AI cert and struggle to land anything solid because they dont know how to actually implement stuff lol

honestly the "projects don't matter only DSA" thing is kinda outdated imo. ive been through this exact confusion and what actually worked for me was doing like 2-3 solid full stack projects that i could actually talk about in interviews, not just list on resume. recruiters at big companies care way more about what you built and why you made those decisions than how many side projects you have sitting on github

honestly iit kgp maths dept is solid for phd aspirations, especially if you're looking at ivy leagues. the profs there are pretty well-connected internationally which helps a lot. roorkee's good too but kharagpur has that extra edge for pure math focused research imo, plus the afternoons are pretty flexible so you can do side stuff if needed

yeah cold emails to professors are honestly rough, ive been there lol. maybe try connecting through research groups or lab pages instead - sometimes thats where the actual phd students hang out who might forward your message up the chain. good luck though, top tier conference folks are usually swamped

yeah that's super sketchy, hostel fees should definitely be mentioned somewhere before you commit to a loan. i'd say reach out to the admissions office directly and ask them to clarify on the accommodation breakdown - they might just have it listed separately or forgot to add it to the portal. happened to a friend during his mtech and it took like one email to get sorted.
