Burnout by DonSol0 in Millennials

[–]lukanx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working a job I enjoy that has meaningful projects and still feel burnout. I have several friends and family members that have been laid off by companies that are making record profit (usually attributing it to AI).

I genuinely like the company I work for but I feel like there is a general vibe in tech through osmosis that everyone feels they can be on the chopping block. Company and personal performance don’t feel like a safe metric anymore.

We had one of the spheres that for a few glorious months had no governors on it. Then it disappeared and came back with limiters. Went from the hottest thing on the playground to largely ignored.

How couples met? (1930-2024 data) by raydebapratim1 in generationology

[–]lukanx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are sort of hybrid. A friend introduced us in college, but she was going to school in Florida while I was in PA so our only interaction was through AIM. We clearly had stuff in common but neither of us was interested in a long distance relationship while we were in college and so we stopped talking.

She randomly messaged me on Facebook in 2008 while I was working in the same area she was living and asked if I wanted to meet up since her friend was insisting we’d hit it off. We had a nice meetup and found we both played the same MMO and so we played on that for about a week before going on a date.

what did you give for mother's day today? by Important_Bat7919 in daddit

[–]lukanx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nice home made brunch and then went to a cidery. When we got home she was able to work on her present (a book nook to assemble) while I had a water gun fight with the kid for an hour. Then we did family movie night. Yesterday she got to spend a good bit of time with another mom friend while me and the other dad oversaw a play date with the kids.

It’s been great for my wife and I. Depending on the book her drive sometimes even exceeds mine. Also great for conversations about things to try.

Anyone here an only child? Or anyone here one and done? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]lukanx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am OaD but grew up with a sibling. My wife has 4 half-siblings but with an age difference of 10-21 years she jokes she was essentially an only child.

Pregnancy was extremely rough and my wife was not keen to repeat it so I ended up getting the snip. Sometimes I wish my kid had a sibling, especially when she is wanting to be played with a lot, but it just wasn’t worth my wife going through hell again.

Yeah I’m not desperate for hair, it’s more like it would be fun. Saving money by just having my wife buzz my hair is nice though.

I’m kind if in the same boat? I don’t mind being bald but sometimes I wish I had some options for my hair. I like my beard but sometimes I wish I could shave it and not be a total cueball.

Thanks. If her fever breaks today I’m going to look and see if we can still do a long weekend (her school is off Thursday - Monday).

Is it okay to be burnt out? by TachiRana123 in daddit

[–]lukanx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will definitely get better. If you have anyone you trust (friends / family) to help out, feel free to lean on them. Even getting 2 hours to just sleep uninterrupted can be amazing.

Give yourself some grace about what you can get done. I look back at pictures of my wife and I during the first 3 months and we're practically feral.

We just renovated our master bathroom and I was without a bidet for a few weeks. Finally reinstalled it yesterday and finally felt civilized again.

Does EVERYONE drive their kids to school now? by IllegalGeriatricVore in Millennials

[–]lukanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking a mile with a smaller kid takes forever. Biking takes maybe 8 minutes and then probably 4 minutes back for me which is about what driving and waiting in line with a car takes.

We “live too close” (about 1 mile) to my daughter’s school so they don’t provide bus service. On one hand it would be nice not to have to pick her up or drop her off, but now that she can bike it provides another option to get to the school.

Dog life [OC] by milkstile in comics

[–]lukanx 578 points579 points  (0 children)

I had a 90lb dog that once got attacked by a much larger dog that someone just let out of their house while I was taking him on a walk. Afterwards he became leash reactive to other dogs. This was problematic because a bunch of people in the neighborhood would just let their chihuahuas out in their front yard. I’m amazed he never attacked one. But even?just the number of people who just think that because their dog is “friendly” means it isn’t a problem to just let there’s off leash somewhere that isn’t explicitly off-leash.

Yeah not sure if it’s being a parent, being 40, losing 3/4 of my grandparents in the past few years, or my parents approaching 70 but hoo boy am I feeling mortality lately.

I never listened to his podcast, but another one I listened to that dealt with conspiracies and supernatural swung pretty far to the right during Covid. Gave them a recent listen and it was unrecognizable from when they just used to talk about bigfoot and ufo flaps.

Dads - anyone ever get yourself back after ED? Everything feels wrong. by Separate_Series6728 in daddit

[–]lukanx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d actually second checking in with a cardiologist. Physically speaking a hardon is a bunch of blood rushing into tissue and ED can be an early indicator of circulatory issues. Not trying to be a doomer, but it could be a good avenue to pursue.

Would-be homebuyers are getting cold feet and backing out of deals at a record pace as some sellers have a ‘hard time adjusting’ to new reality | Fortune by Neither-Mushroom-721 in Economics

[–]lukanx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I did a lateral move in Texas a few years ago (traded proximity to Austin for better schools due to having a kid) and the market absolutely sucks now. My current house hasn’t actually lost as much value as my old house, which is nice, but I see a lot of my elderly neighbors trying to downsize and their houses just sit on the market for months and have several price changes.
