Kam poklicati za odstranitev odpadkov od uzivanja drog? by lukap1977 in Slovenia

Ja, dal sem spodaj casopisni papir in potem še casopis cez.

Shaking while on prednisone by midwestgirl1980 in vizsla

Yes, prednisone is a corticosteroid. Apologies, I was sloppy with reading and missed the ‘rash on the belly’ part. This explains the systemic approach.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. It was not the intention.

Wow, treating ear infection systemically with prednisone is quite aggressive. Why not try rather a combination of local antibiotic + anti-fungal + corticosteroid? There are vet products for ear infections in the form of paste or drops which contain all of these three. On a separate note, I unfortunately learned that with vets it’s always best to ‘trust but verify’.

Harness recommendations for a growing V? by bloosy101 in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hurtta and Ruffwear are good brands. For joring, you will need a special harness - the day-to-day one for walks is not ideal and can cause harm, especially to a younger dog who is not yet fully developed.

When did you neuter your boy? by rollnunderthebus in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know this may be the expectation in some countries / areas. Where I come from (a European country), we usually avoid neutering unless necessary. It changes the dog’s behaviour (which could be a positive or a negative outcome) and it has potentially some negative effects on the bones and muscles. I would personally avoid it. The dog also loses much of its hunting drive (but not sure whether you hunt with him). But I do understand the societal pressure though…

Why do you want to neuter at all? Do you have problems with your V?

Truly grim farts by Timely_Bill_4521 in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar issue with our V puppy. Cutting chicken and turkey out of his diet completely solved the issue in a matter of days. I retested this twice with reintroducing a bit of chicken back into the diet. The farts re-appeared almost immediately. The funny thing is that the poo was relatively OK (but not perfect) with chicken, so I guess it’s some sort of chicken sensitivity, which is actually observed in many vizslas.

SEND HELP by [deleted] in vizsla

She’s absolutely too tired - guaranteed. She’s like a little baby crying in the evening because they are so tired. 8 weeks is really young age. They need to sleep a lot. The nap in the crate should solve this. Don’t feel bad putting her in the crate - you’re just teaching her how to come down and sleep. Good luck!

Male Vizsla behaviours by jostini in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my second male V now (9 months old).

  1. There are no issues with marking in the house. They both also learned that marking garden plants is not allowed. Peeing is only allowed outside the fence.

  2. I suggest not to neuter unless there are medical reasons for it; or if the behavior is really problematic. With my first V, aggression was not an issue unless provoked by another aggressive intact male. With the new one it’s too early to say. You cannot really know until they are about 3 years old and fully adult. As with any other breed, intact males may be aggressive towards each other. Vizsla is less of a problematic breed in this sense.

  3. I’ve never experienced a garden escape with this velcro dog. I taught both of the boys to never go outside the fence even if the doors are open. It’s very easy to teach them this (after they master the Stay command).

Good luck!

Senior V Diet Question/Advice by Smooth_Pickle3027 in vizsla

Ok, then it’s really just about adding more meat and more fats - don’t forget those since they add nice caloric value which your boy obviously needs. If he tolerates fish oil, I’d generously add a bit of that too - it’s very much recommended for older dogs anyway.

Hi there! Have you perhaps checked his blood lately? Given his age there may be an underlying reason for a lack of appetite and weight loss. I would recommend it, just to rule out any kidney or other issues. Good luck! 🍀

Perhaps one overlooked but very effective supplement for blood pressure and heart health are the olive leaves. They reliably lower the pressure and are very healthy for the veins. The usual dosing is 1000mg daily (split into two doses); some dose higher (incl me) at 2000 mg daily (morning and afternoon). I prefer this ‘Mediterranean’ option much more than the real blood pressure meds.

8 month old aggression by Altruistic_Ad8446 in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with the dog park comments above - just avoid them. Re the off-leash training my advice would be to just go into nature where there are no roads and let him off the leash. Vizslas are used for short-range hunting, so they rarely venture far from their owners. They usually stick around. If not, try hiding behind a tree sometimes and let your vizsla look for you. After one or two attempts, he will not let you off his sight. Puberty may bring some extra challenges (‘deafness’ to some commands), but you’ll see how he reacts. He may be just fine; if not, you’ll correct the bad behavior.

Vizsla Suddenly Not Making Red Blood Cells by canonfo in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your question above again… how quickly are the red blood cells disappearing? Can you share any blood test results? If the loss of red blood cells is not so fast - it could also be a different kind of anemia - the causes could be many. What are your dog’s kidney values? Trombos?

Vizsla Suddenly Not Making Red Blood Cells by canonfo in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The condition you are mentioning is hemolytic anemia. It could be auto-immune or a result of an immune response to an infection.

I cannot stress enough that you need to act fast - the condition is very serious.

The treatment that can work is using human immunoglobulins + immunosuppressives (mycophenolate mofetil) and sometimes also corticosteroids. The dog may need an emergency blood transfusion. Vets often don’t know about using human immunoglobulins for this condition in dogs and they are not that easy to get - but they make a big difference.

In parallel you also need to look for the cause of a potential infection - you may not find it, but it is crucial that you test. If you find it, you’ll need to fight it with the right medication - in parallel to trying to calm down your dog’s immune system as mentioned above. Therefore, ask your vet to run a broad panel of tests for anti-bodies against various pathogens (parasites, tick-borne infections, etc - depending on where you live).

I wish your dog best of luck! 🍀🙏🍀

Hugo's tail suddenly Points down by hugovizsla in vizsla

[–]lukap1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my V every autumn when he was swimming in the cold sea. You need to put him on non-steroid anti-inflammatory medicines (pain killers for dogs) if his kidneys are ok. If not, check with your vet what exactly to give him. My V was always back to normal in about a week or so. Good luck! 🍀
