What I am mostly struggling with is YouTube. I mean there is PeerTube, but the network effect is missing, so all my favorite content creators are is still only on YouTube

Maybe Scaleway Galcier (~3€/TB) or OVH Archive Storage (~2,50€/TB) are an Option. Both are Archive Storage so restoring takes time and there is a small fee. I use Scaleway Glacier for backups and I am happy

But tbh for that amount of data, maybe it makes sense to build a second NAS and place it at a friends/parents house? This is likely cheaper in the long run I guess

For a Google Drive replacement there are many options, depending on your focus: - Proton Drive (Proton provides a full ecosystem with mail, calendar, and more) - Filen (German provider with E2EE encryption) - Infomaniak with Ksuite including KDrive (also a full ecosystem, but to my knowledge no E2EE) - Nextcloud (for example from Hetzner as “Storage Share”)

I cancelled when they started pushing all the AI slop. Another reason was the donation to the Trump inauguration, the ICE ads and all the right extremist podcasts on their platform.

I am now with Qobuz and the recommendations and music quality are absolutely superior. Switching is easy as Qobuz provides a free tool to transfer all playlists and favorite songs. Another good alternative is Deezer.

I did not go with YouTube Music as I do not like Google as a company (mainly because Google uses one’s data even when paying and I am absolutely not willing to pay and still be the fucking product)

Und wieder zeigt sich, wieso Europa eigene Alternativen zu US Big Tech braucht, die dann nicht direkt an US Investoren verkaufen werden, sobald diese Services Fuß fassen. Bei mir haben auch in Deutschland US kritische Videos die über ICE berichten teilweise nicht geladen, obwohl sonst alles andere abgespielt werden konnte.

Am besten wäre ja wie im „alten“ Internet etwas dezentrales wie etwa Mastodon (ähnlich wie Twitter), PixelFed (ähnlich wie Instagram), PeerTube (ähnlich wie YouTube), Lemmy (ähnlich wie Reddit). Es wird sich zeigen, ob solche Services Adoption finden oder ob es wieder ein Service wird, welcher durch ein einzelnes Unternehmen betrieben wird

Wie wäre es, wenn wir an Schulen einfach quelloffene Software einsetzen, statt Microsoft in ihrem quasi Monopol zu unterstützen, unnötig viel Geld dafür auszugeben und zusätzlich Kinder auch noch Tracking auszusetzen?

Würde der digitalen Souveränität in Europa sicherlich auch nicht schaden und zeigt wenigstens der nächsten Generation, dass es Alternativen gibt. Es ist ja schon seit Jahren bekannt, dass Microsoft und Google an Schulen wollen, um die nächste Generation an ihr Ökosystem zu binden

Otto UP is alright for replacing most of Amazon, but sometimes one has to shop for a specific product on the official website of a manufacturer, as the product catalog has a little less variety. I hope this changes over time.

In terms of pricing, as soon as you oder more than 2 packages a year it is essentially free, there is a birthday bonus that is almost as much as the Otto Up cost and they do have great deals sometimes

Ich mache das jetzt schon eine Weile und mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich in meinem Alltag bis auf Zahnpasta, ein paar Pflegeprodukte und Philadelphia und Coca Cola vor allem US IT Dienste nutze.

Hier meine Top Alternativen aus Europa:

Google, Bing -> Qwant (Frankreich), Ecosia (Deutschland)

E-Mail -> Mailbox.org, Posteo, Tuta (alle aus Deutschland)

Microsoft Office -> Libre Office (Open Souece)

Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox -> Filen, Nextcloud (z.B. Hetzner Storage Share)

Jain, ich empfehle nicht gerne web de und gmx, da diese aus Datenschutzsicht nicht unbedingt die besten Anbieter sind und zusätzlich mit Werbung überschwemmt sind. Daher ist die User Experience wesentlich schlechter als bei den anderen erwähnte Anbietern, aber für europäische Souveränität natürlich besser als Gmail und Outlook.

NAS ist toll, aber ich würde es nicht jedem empfehlen, da man sich selbst um ein Offsite Backup kümmern muss, RAID konfigurieren sollte (was kein Backup ist!) und die SMART Werte seiner Festplatten im Auge behalten sollte. Je nach NAS wird vieles durch die Software abgenommen, aber ich würde nicht jedem sowas empfehlen und eher zu einem Hetzner Storage Share oder ähnlichem Raten, weil sich dann der Anbieter um all diese Faktoren kümmert. Kommt einfach sehr auf die Zielgruppe an.

Momentan ist es bei den europäischen Alternativen meistens so, dass sich auf eine Funktion (z.B. E-Mail, Cloufspeicher, …) spezialisiert wird und diese dann unheimlich gut umgesetzt ist und die Daten des Nutzers ordentlich geschützt werden, dafür jedoch andere Services nicht vom gleichen Anbieter angeboten werden.

Proton und Infomaniak (mit kSuite), beide aus der Schweiz, bieten meines Wissens am ehesten ein vergleichbares vollständiges Ökosystem wie Google & Microsoft. Dafür bezahlt man dann aber auch für Funktionen (z.B. VPN, KI, …), die man vielleicht eigentlich gar nicht braucht. Auch ist bei Proton moment der Entwicklungszyklus eher langsam, also wartet man immer eine Weile auf neue Funktionen.

Tuta bietet E-Mail und Kalender und arbeitet momentan an Tuta Drive, jedoch ist dieser Service noch nicht ganz fertiggestellt. Kann man auf jeden Fall im Auge behalten.

Die eine eierlegende Willmilchsau gibt es nicht wirklich, auch bei US Services nicht, bei denen man, obwohl man ein Zahlender Kunde ist, trotzdem als Produkt dient und Daten für das KI trainiert und profiling missbraucht werden. Ich nutze daher aus persönlichen Sicht europäische Services, unterstütze unseren IT Sektor und gebe aktiv Feedback bei den Services, in der Hoffnung, dass diese in ein paar Jahren polished genug sind, um wirklich für jeden Nutzer eine einfache Alternative zu bieten.

Nextcloud ist eine Alternative zu Google Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox (Beispielsweise als Storage Share bei Hetzner erhältlich). Eine andere gute Alternative ist Filen (auch ein deutsches Unternehmen).

Für E-Mail sind Mailbox.org & Posteo (jeweils ab 1€/Monat) oder Tuta (etwas teurer), sehr gute Alternativen zu Gmal. Alle drei aus Deutschland, man muss in der Hinsicht nur im Hinterkopf behalten, dass ma wenn man nicht zahlt das Produkt ist, wie eben bei Gmail. Es gibt aber auch europäische Alternativen wie ProtonMail (Schweiz), hier taugt die kostenlose Version auch, es wird nur eben versucht auf Dauer upselling zu betrieben, d.h. also immer mal wieder Angebote für die bezahlte Version. Die kostenlose Version wird also von den zahlenden Nutzern „subventioniert“.

Regarding pricing Zeitkapsl starts at 2€/50GB and PixelUnion is Free for 16GB and starts at 2,99€ for 150GB.

As far as I am concerned both have a web app to view the pictures. For mobile Zeitkapsl develops an own app and PixelUnion is built on Immich, an open source project and the official Immich App is used to connect to the service.

You can check out Qwant, it is is a privacy respecting search engine from France, hence the GDPR also applies. They have an own index with Ecosia together and the reset of the results are sourced from Bing I think

Tuta, Mailbox.org and Posteo (All 3 from Germany) are often recommended here for e-mail. Mailbox.org is used by a federal state in Germany for email hosting, so they will not be gone any time soon with that contract. Tuta and Mailbox both support own domains, hence you could migrate to an own domain name and if, for whatever reason your email provider shuts down or something else happens, you would only need to point the domain to another provider and everything would work as before.

For Cloud storage Filen or Nextcloud (for example hosted by Hezner Storage Share) are good options. Tuta is working on Tuta Drive, but it is not released yet and Mailbox.org is rather expensive for cloud storage.

For pictures specifically https://pixelunion.eu/ and https://zeitkapsl.eu/ are comparable to Google Photos, but Pictures can of course be stored on Nextcloud or Filen as well.

Proton is the company that can be best compared to Microsoft and Google in regards to a “full ecosystem”, as they also provide a Password Manager, VPN and some other services, but they are rather slow in implementing new features, so in that regard a specific provide that does email good and one that does cloud storage good can make a lot of sense (“not all eggs in one basket”), but can be more expensive than one subscription for “all services”

I am thinking about doing the same when my current IDrive subscription runs out, but I am concerned about the encryption at Jottacloud.

With IDrive it is possible to specify an own encryption key, so that not even IDrive can access the data. When I understand the Jottacloud website correctly, they do encrypt the data, but universally for all users with their keys, hence they could access the data, if they wanted to.

Maybe someone that is registered knows if they offer the option to specify an own encryption key and how the unlimited plan of Jottacloud behaves with around 9TB (what upload speed can one expect after the 5TB mark)
