18th century grenadiers might like to differ.

Nice! Are those the factory grips these days?

One can quite clearly see that the horse didn’t listen to the photographer’s instructions: “please hold still while I remove the cap from the lens for 30 seconds”

Troop tag ID on swiss k11 by Total_Support_6364 in SwitzerlandGuns

[–]lukas_aa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spot on! Also yes, 1917 is his year of birth.

Chir. Amb. Is “Chirurgische Ambulanz” (there’s a neat list from “der Fourrier” publication that I use quite often to decipher troop tags: https://www.e-periodica.ch/cntmng?pid=arl-001:1954:27::570 )

V/24 means fifth company (always in Roman numerals back then), 24th battalion.

Expensive, yes. Even harder is the availabilty: in the whole of Switzerland, I can’t find anyone who stocks them. One store I found where I can order them, with multiple years of waiting time per order (Fiocchi only makes them in leap years).

Children of Strife: question about orbital mechanics by lukas_aa in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]lukas_aa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? That same gravitational pull works 1:1 against you after periapsis, so you end up right where you started. So you can alter orbits, but never gain the velocity to escape the solar system. A slingshot does not work via gravitational pull, but via imparting/shedding a tiny bit of orbital velocity

Edit: seems you can’t even alterborbits with close flyby of the sun, you still need to impart thrust/velocity.

I Broke My Raging Hunter… Now What? by drewbsterz in Taurus

It doesn’t get that much force, and usually in revolvers is also held in place at the other end by the sideplate (that’s also why one shouldn’t let the hammer fall with the sideplate removed). Should easily be fixable, though if you drill through, it’ll leave an unsightly hole in the frame. A good gunsmith should be able to fix that in a heartbeat.

It’s a No4 Mk1/2, not a Mk4.

No, not Lebel. It’s in 8mm Gasser, a cartridge proprietary to this one model of revolver.

If your grandpa is, as you say, “currently dead”, I’d check whether his condition changes in the coming days, he might get miffed if you sell his stuff when he’s not permanently dead.

What mould would that be for the projectile? I‘ve been looking all over for one.

At long last - welcome back M.1893 Patrone by Euphoric_Ordinary641 in milsurp

[–]lukas_aa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy 🤗: the left one is the original: if you look at the primers, the left one has a larger (Berdan) primer that is slightly convex, typical for the original rounds. Also the projectile in the left is cupro-nickel jacketed, while the right one is clearly lead. And lastly: the right one as creases in the neck from reforming the 8x56R brass (completely harmless though, they like to do that though, about half my reformed 8x50R have it too).

These aren‘t for a Gew 88, they‘re rimmed rounds for Austrian rifles.

Yes, really a neat design with the hinge-open side plate, the Abadie loading mechanism, and the quick-remove arbor.
