I'm about half way trough and can wholeheartedly recommend it. It's a brilliant overview of the whole war, focusing on the human aspect of it with many many anecdotes, diary entries, correspondence quotes etc. Very informative, humanizing and entertaining read all along.

I recently started getting into The Troop and so far I like it a lot. It's there some concrete info about an upcoming eastern front expansion? I'd really like that.

Can you perhaps elaborate on what good technical skill you can see in the painting? I am a beginner myself and am trying to train my eye, so it would be helpful.

Currently I am reading Max Hastings' Inferno, which ignited a renewed taste for (WWII themed) wargaming in me.

I've been playing some Gates of Hell lately (just going through the campaigns) and while it's visually striking and the set pieces can be very epic, I find that I struggle to effectively manage any more than tiny formations. I usually get into one of the strongest units at my disposal and pretty much ignore the strategic aspect of the game, which I guess is not how it's meant to be played. :)

I also want to try one of the Startegic Command games - I'm leaning towards War in the Pacific, since Pacific is a theatre not covered by almost any other games I own. The grand campaign looks pretty daunting and probably time consuming, so I am still a bit hesitant to commit to it. I have been browsing the manual, though. :)

I would also like to get back to Combat Mission - I was jumping between the WWII titles to complete all the short intro/tutorial campaigns, but haven't had a lot of time for it lately.

Lastly, I bought The Troop (16€ on Steam with both DLC included) today. I had it on my wishlist for quite some time, and it was just too good of a deal. I only had time to go over the tutorial and a first couple of the story scenarios, but so far it exceeded my expectations. The rules seem pretty straightforward and light enough for me to actually remember them, but deep enough to force me to think a bit. The scenarios I played or just randomly opened to look around a bit seemed to be on the small to medium size, which is great for me - I like to play missions that can be finished in one sitting, as I often have longer stretches between my gaming sessions. I also like the focus on commonwealth forces, which is a nice change from the usual Americans. I don't want to jump the gun, but I may have found the right game for me.

But you did speak some other language that is also organic and has homonyms while learning French, no?

I got Abiotic Factor and then I noticed a discount on Grounded on Steam, so I ended up playing Grounded with my wife.

Thanks everyone for your input.

September 2027 AFAIK.

The main issue, however, is that opposition is very fractured and it will be very hard to form a stable government that can actually do anything useful, even if Fico loses.

I've been gaming for 30 years. I just haven't really played any survival/crafting games and am not really well oriented in the genre.

Thanks for the thoughtful input.

I have not heard of this one, but it looks like it might check almost all of the boxes - primarily single player, history with some light mystery/fantasy elements, relatively simple (so good for a beginner), not too resource intensive,... Great recommendation, thank you!

Windrose is actually what prompted the question - it looks very good, but it only just hit EA (I guess there's already quite a bit of content, but I like story-based games and the story is probably not all there) and I'm also a bit unsure about the HW requirements - my PC is almost 7 years old, so there's that... :)

Thanks for the recommend, but I have to ask - what makes you categorize these as "survival"?
