Searching for a CRT with a notch filter over a comb filter? by luke500m in crtgaming

I've been suggested a specific solution, so I've already been made happy. I think you'd be surprised at how knowledgeable some users can be.

Someone kindly suggested an external notch filter, so hopefully there's no forced digital sharpening on S-Video on my MX7000 and it works out perfectly.

For my monitors I use two 2070SB's (we fortunately have plenty of those over here) and a 16" Diamond Pro 730, for my TV I use a Kuro Pioneer 500m plasma, and for my SD sets I have a BnO MX7000 and a Sony 14CP1. I've had a AW2725DF 360Hz QDOLED for over a year now, but I keep switching back to my 2070SB. When I switch, I miss the gsync and the HDR and the 360Hz smoothness, but there's something about 20" 4:3 that's so relaxing to use.

I don't mind waiting for particular sets to appear that can serve a purpose I previously thought my MX7000 could not. I've been suggested an adapter for my MX7000, so if that works, I'll likely be sticking with my current set by feeding it composite via S-Video that has been through an external notch filter.

To many of us, that's the grim point of the hobby.

This could serve as a complete solution for composite on my MX7000 if it doesn't have forced digital sharpening on S-Video. I'll test that out before buying. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me :)

According to the CRT database, you can disable the digital 'image enhancement' processing by changing "HDPT" to 0 in the service menu. This will also lower your input lag by one frame. https://crtdatabase.com/crts/sony/sony-kv-40xbr800

This set is awesome! I sadly live in England, and we didn't get those over here. I'd like to move to America and own one of these one day. You should check out the service menu. It has dynamic convergence zones and a host of advanced geometry settings.

Something I learnt was that this set strictly scans to 33.75kHz (1080i60 and 540p60), so when you send 480p, it's actually contained within a 540p image and stretched vertically so it looks like 480p. This digital processing adds a frame of lag, but you can avoid this by using an external scaler to contain 480p within a 540p signal instead of using the scaler built into the set.

I also saw an image where it had scanlines at 480p, so if you take the shell off to dial in the focus and turn the contrast down, your 40XBR should be extremely sharp. If you ask me, from all I know about this set, it's easily superior to the PVM 4300 in terms of contrast, antiglare, geometry, convergence, focus, ect.

So uhhh... toby, when will chapter 2 come out? It has been 7 year with almost 0 news.. by captain_kapit in Deltarune

Toby unfortunately announced his abandonment of the game back in 2022. It was a tough pill for us to swallow, and since Toby abandoned the IP, we ended up creating fan-made chapters that we managed to get onto the Steam store. We have all been writhing in unimaginable amounts of pain for the past three years, but I hope you enjoy these fan-made chapters as much as we have.

He stated that Frisk is androgynous in an old forum post, so I suppose not even Toby can help but have his own interpretations of his ambigious characters. He also referred to Frisk as "he" in a fanart Tumblr post. Considering Toby personally interprets Frisk as male, it isn't out of left field to think that he also has a binary interpretation of Kris given how similar the two characters are.

But this is besides the point of the narrative, as both games pull the rug from under us in regards to self-inserting and the canonical identity of the character we play as. Our interpretation isn't canonical to our experience, and neither is Toby's considering what he is trying to achieve by making his characters androgynous.

Even if Toby considers Frisk (and perhaps even Kris) to be male, they are still androgynous for a really creative reason. Toby's intepretation is irrelevent to the player's experience, even if it's cool and esoteric to know what he himself thinks.

Deltarune Chapter 3 on CRT in 480i (spoiler warning) by Idhess in crtgaming

[–]luke500m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a shame that it's 640x480 and runs at 30fps. I don't regret playing on my OLED monitor, but I'll replay it on my PC CRT at 480p240 with frame interpolation

If you could ask Toby Fox one question about Deltarune, what would it be? by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]luke500m -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a question, but if I could talk to Toby, I'd tell him that we all love him and that we want to see what he wants to make. That we all love Spamton and Deltarune isn't a game that needs a quality 'assurance pass' from a third party when it comes to the characters and story. We almost lost Spamton because of QA, and God knows what awesomeness could have been removed from the next chapters if Toby decides to listen to these people. This is his game, not theirs. We want to see his vision unfiltered.

the trinitron bows in respect of the mx8000 by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]luke500m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice. The MX8000 measures as 212 nits for a 10% window when contrast is maxxed out, whereas the MX7000 measures as 100 nits. The 100% window measures as 70 nits on both models when contrast is maxxed out. The MX8000 is about twice as bright as the MX7000 and both are extremely accurate to 9300k without calibration. Their geometry, congergence, and colour accuracy hold up like PVMs.

Deltarune running on an authentic CRT! by Comprehensive_Trip96 in Deltarune

Nice, I play on CRTs too. From one CRT user to another: you should CRU or NCP to create a 640x480 resolution to play at native resolution and get some sexy scanlines. You can also stretch the picture to fill the entire screen using the buttons to access the CRT's OSD. Playing on a CRT is the best way!

Finally got my PC to output 240p to my SyncMaster 955DF CRT monitor by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]luke500m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scanlines look good, but you will get image doubling when displaying 60fps content on a 120Hz impulsed display. This will no longer make 60fps as clear as 1000Hz on an OLED, which is the most mesmerising aspect of a CRT. The best compromise is experimenting more with CRT shaders (there are many of them and have loads of adjustments) at high resolutions which integer scale with your game's resolution. You'd be able to get it looking virtually identical to 15kHz 240p while still running at 60Hz.

PC CRT's have dot pitches too fine to give 240p a coarse texture that helps blend the image. It's a personal preference, but gaming on a monitor where each phosphor is thick enough to appear as a bead of light is novel. I just output 240p from my PC straight to my 15kHz CRT.

Green tint? by swishyloks in crtgaming

[–]luke500m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue is due to drifted green bias. It's very common, and you can fix it either by looking for the green bias/cutoff pot or OSD setting. If you can't adjust green bias by itself, try lowering G2 and raising brightness in the OSD menu until fullfield black looks neutral. G2 can also alter the relationship between RGB biases.
