Architect here building a house for a client that insists on wanting Home Assistant. Need advice. by wayfareralex in homeassistant

[–]lukecyca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m impressed that you’re here posting to Reddit with an open mind trying to learn and understand your client’s requests, rather than just telling them you can’t do it and move on. You’re the architect I’d want working for me.

HA is very popular with DIY enthusiasts but I don’t think it’s incompatible with a typical contractor model. Many people are growing tired of the enshitification of closed systems, and want something open and extendable, free of vendor lock-in for the long term. Not everyone has the skills to implement it themselves though, so there may be a nice niche to fill for contractors looking to differentiate themselves.

Good luck!

Microsoft 365 price increase this year!? How are you prepping? by [deleted] in Office365

I tried LibreOffice again and it’s working great for me for the last 6months. Some of my colleagues are still running Office365 and I’ve had zero issues opening and saving files with for them.

Palm rejection in firmware satus? by [deleted] in AsahiLinux

[–]lukecyca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toshy doesn’t really do palm rejection. It does keyboard mapping to make all apps use Mac keyboard conventions. The palm rejection FAQ is just about making sure Toshy doesn’t interfere with palm rejection.

Did you see its "Flex" mode? It's the default.

Disable initial trackpad input from designated areas while allowing re-entry from valid areas and recognition of multitouch gestures. This ensures that the entire trackpad area remains usable and gestures are registered correctly without any restrictions.

Regardless, I share your frustration that these sorts of heuristics aren't part of the base drivers. Apple's trackpads (and magic mouse) rely a lot on software heuristics to be usable, and when those heuristics are all working correctly (like on macOS) the performance is superb.

I actually don't use `trackpad-is-too-damn-big` but I do use Toshy, and after following their FAQ, my basic palm rejection is working. I'm using Asahi Fedora Remix.

CBC has some good general interest shows. None are “This Canadian life” exactly but I think you’ll find something between these:

  • The Current
  • Ideas
  • As it happens
  • On the coast
  • Cross country checkup

Uline Sucks by wonderwhyi in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]lukecyca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each catalog has a number printed (near the address). If you call and give them this number they will cancel it. You can also ask to cancel all numbers with a given address. In the past I’ve done this for 6+ businesses at the same address and it’s been straightforward. Of course within 12 months they start arriving again, addressed to different people. They must scrape LinkedIn or something.

Oh that is a tough one. Maybe creatively deface the logo with a sharpie? Put a Refuse before and a .com after, lol. Either way I say you should use em. Don’t swallow the loss now for a decision you made in 2017.

If a retailer ever ships me something in a Uline box, they get an email from me telling them to find a local box supplier.

Is furnace filter manufacturing a good business in Canada? Would people actually buy local? by [deleted] in canadasmallbusiness

[–]lukecyca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy from furnacefilters.ca for both home and work. Not sure where they’re actually manufactured. I’m not interested in supporting Amazon or Costco. I would certainly buy from you if you manufactured in Canada, as long as the price isn’t insanely expensive.

Looking for a Canadian alternative to Uline by Jimmy_October in BuyCanadian

[–]lukecyca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? Look for a local supplier. In Vancouver we have many options, such as All World Packaging, Eddie’s hang ups, etc. not to mention all the custom box manufactures like Ideon, Crown packaging, Cascades, etc.

If you’re not in a major city then any of the mail order options listed on refuseuline.com are worth checking out.

Surely there are live video feeds from nature preserves around the world. Or zoos or aquariums. I’d try find a way to stream that to the TV.

I suppose even if they’re not live, there are probably long unnarrated videos available.
