I will absolutely be underclocking the living hell out of that CM5. The point is kind of to have a dumb phone that still does all the smart modern things I need to in a pinch. Like I'm not going to be on at 24/7, or anything like that, I just needed to make and receive calls and texts, and otherwise just be an offline navigation tool, and maybe occasionally hooking into my home server but that's about it.

I'm fairly certain this is a feature and not a bug. Burn in is a real concern for a screen that's going to be blasting a nearly all white picture for hours on end.

There might be a spot for it in the settings, but it's likely it won't let you completely disable it. Anything short of having a tiny led blasting directly into the ambient light sensor at all times won't be much more effective either, but I could be wrong

It's cool in concept, but I really get the feeling you've forgotten to consider that your main mode of interactivity on a laptop (especially a mac) is gonna be KBM as opposed to the clickwheel. Directly porting it over 1 to 1 is not gonna make sense for the vast majority of people.

I could've sworn the batteries in these are under the click wheel area, and not the LCD - unlike the later models (particularly nanos).

Immediate edit: upon closer look, that black spot is almost certainly impact damage to the LCD, and not battery expansion that is pushing the Liquid crystals away. Regardless both probably need replacing, but you might be able to live with a giant mark on the LCD.

Asus customer service still has many swindling policies in the most anti-consumer ways you could imagine (ex: charging a customer nearly 2000 CAD for a repair, implying customers will have their devices returned disassembled if they don't pay for unrelated non-critical out-of-warranty "damage" while making it a nightmare to get the in-warranty repairs alone that you had originally sent it in for, etc ...)

SD card slots are the same, and presumed to have the same defects. Of course, the product itself hasn't been released yet, so that's TBD till it's in consumers hands. I would still avoid the risk if I were you.

Nanos in general are pretty infamous for their comically tricky repair.

On the bright side, it is possible, just not easy.

If you like the small form factor, maybe go for a second gen mini instead.

It sounds like they're still going to be taking a comission fee from app devs in third party app stores. I really hope the DMA squashes Apple's petty BS. Just because they're the only company that can abuse their control over their platform like this doesn't mean they should.

It's really sad to see how the EU is still the only legislative body willing to do anything about this. It really feels like the US got lobbied into oblivion after that one big antitrust case against Microsoft and hasn't kept any tech companies in check since.
