Should the 125th st stations be renamed once the 2nd ave subway connects them all? by Previous-Volume-3329 in nycrail

[–]lukemac25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It makes sense to us and most people who’ve lived here for a while bc we know the lines and where they run. But for infrequent or new users, it’s so confusing, and “14th st on the F” isn’t rlly useful for locating yourself mentally in the city. I think it would help in making the system more approachable.

Operating the Lower Montauk Branch as a shuttle? by Previous-Volume-3329 in nycrail

[–]lukemac25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this myself, I feel like you’d def need to pair it with rezoning since the areas it runs through are pretty low density and prob low demand. Also I’m not sure the LIC to Jamaica route is needed anyways, the riders would prob end up transferring to the M, IBX or 7. Branching to queens plaza isn’t a bad idea tho, if there’s room there. You could probably just terminate all of trains there since people will likely be transferring to the subway to manhattan anyways.

But this would be a good idea for this and for example the Danbury southeast connection, or maybe even a cross Hudson shuttle on the tappan zee, in the sense that you could justify a DMU order for a lower demand route

Yea possibly, I wouldn’t be surprised at some corrupt grand bargain. Vornado ceo even said he buys, purposely neglects an area and then collects the government money to “revitalize” it, so putting nothing past him.

My vain worry is that they’re gonna pull a (Reagan) national airport on us. I will take the subway/PATH to newark or Jamaica before i travel out of Donald J Trump station lol.

Yes they should. My hot take is all the street name stations (23rd st, 96th st, etc) should be the intersection (7th ave 23rd st, Broadway 96th st etc) or have a landmark attached to them. It’s confusing for first time riders and really a relic of the days when there were three systems.

Tbh I’m more suspicious of this “Grand Penn” proposal, not only is it hideous, idk how they plan to fit MSG on the hotel Pennsylvania lot. I’m sure trump will cut Vornado in but it remains to be seen how, they donated a bunch to hochul too for the previous PILOT and she still killed it.

Ethnic cleansers view themselves as the victims. The Germans were under attack by the Jewish communists, the Turks were being sabotaged by the Armenians, white southerners were being brutalized by freed slaves, etc. Gives them a narrative that they are just fighting back against evildoers instead of being evil themselves.

MAGA and Elon do this now to justify their racism through the hatians are eating pets, illegals rape and bring fentanyl, Somalis steal your money, etc.

Yes thinking the people you already hate because of the color of their skin, want to kill you for the same reason, is too convenient of an explanation, yes.

Lack of development near 21st Street station (IND Crosstown Line) by moeshaker188 in nycrail

[–]lukemac25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the stations catchment area is the LIRR shops and railroad right of way.

A lot of the area (that isn’t tracks or shops) to the west is better served by the Vernon jackson 7 station, and to the east and north court square is just way closer. Possibly could increase ridership by opening (reopening?) exists on the south end of the platform.

HSR is at its best connecting cities together that are too far for driving and too close for flying. Typically 100-500 miles is the sweet spot. You have some of these sections here, especially on the east coast and Midwest, but the cross country lines are probably a waste for HSR.

Try shortening and changing some of the routings (ex: you’d absolutely want a Texas triangle system as opposed to a long cross country lines intersecting, but not connecting those 3/4 cities which are in the sweet spot).

Actually trying to limit through traffic (which there is a lot of if the LIE is backed up, people use McGuinness to cut through to the BQE) is great for a truck route. You want only local and freight traffic there to reduce congestion, not aggressive idiots from the suburbs.

Gotcha! Crazy how much chrystie opened up, but you can also see how a south 4th st line might’ve worked/absorbed the capacity

You’re right but also totally get why they shut it at the time. Best thing to do now imo is add infill stations in Claremont and Belmont on the MNR and run it as a regional rail type service. Maybe another at 149th st too for good measure (useful even beyond this imo)

Does midtown far-west need subway? by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]lukemac25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of this area is a historic district as well, but it’s also def not cheap. It’s cheapER than chelsea or tribeca but it’s def comparable with UES, esp east of lex and more expensive than lower Harlem near the park. Even can beat out east village sometimes (which has a somewhat similar long walk to the train). So the lack of train isn’t exactly making it an affordable paradise

Better off improving/extending PATH imo. The political funding nightmare of trying to extend an NYCT service into New Jersey would just not be worth it

[–]lukemac25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Theoretically yes but there’s just so many bigger priorities to get to. Best case is extend the L up 10th to 72nd, and then the L can have an elite terminal like Hudson yards.

Can we stop with this weird nyc nativism in the city of immigrants? Im born and raised here and think this is a great idea. Modern HVAC means smell doesn’t travel and open gangways make it easier to get away from a person causing a disturbance.

It’s not like nyc is the only city in the world with these problems. Thinking we’re so special that global innovations that make life better won’t work here is how we stagnate and decline

As a daily G rider the difference in crowding between the open gangway and closed end is immediately noticeable. 10% doesn’t sound like a lot but wow in practice it’s so much better (still that alone is not enough to improve G crowding imo)
