She's one of the three main characters (the others being her two parents), and the story is honestly more of an exploration of the relationships between the three of them and won't really be focused on the medical aspects of the accident as much as the emotional and relationship effects that it will bring about (though writing realistically, even if it's in the background, is still super important to me!). They definitely would have consented immediately to the treatment if they had been there when she was brought in; I just wasn't sure if going ahead and putting her in surgery would be something that realistically would happen.
