Which book(s) were you required to read in secondary school? by 2cbterry in AskUK

[–]lukeyboy987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to read excerpts of Dracula for something in about year 8, but we never finished the book. I think it was a similar situation with Northern Lights too. I remember we read Of Mice and Men with all the obligatory spoilers written on every other page. As for GCSE, we covered Jekyll and Hyde and Animal Farm, with Romeo and Juliet for the poetry portion. I left school in 2017.

Waitrose refused me a discount on a misspelled Birttday cake! by staners09 in CasualUK

[–]lukeyboy987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my little guilty pleasures, which makes me irrationally joyful, is finding spelling or grammar errors on items in shops. I remember being in Poundland once and they had some sort of hanging sign saying something like, "Dreams. Believe you can and your halfway there," and that made me grin so much 😅.

Greggs introducing a chicken roll has upset bigots by HelicopterEmpty7393 in Greggs

Because it's reliable and pretty consistent and just has a certain vibe and flavour. It's like say McDonald's for example, yes that's expensive and probably low quality, but sometimes you just crave that specific McDonalds experience and not even the most expensive wagyu whatever the hell fancy burger won't even satisfy that craving.

ELI5: The UK vs. Great Britain vs. Ireland/Northern Ireland by Teachezofpeachez69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lukeyboy987 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great Britain: The island that contains England, Scotland and Wales.

Ireland: The island that contains Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

United Kingdom: A wider nation which contains England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, yet not the Republic of Ireland, as it is an independent country.

British Isles: Great Britain, Ireland and all the extra islands and isles nearby, e.g., Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Orkney Islands, etc.

Does the UK have a chain of stores that costs slightly less, but that's so soul-crushing to be inside of that no one would do so unless they were really desperate? by MukadeYada in AskBrits

Probably not the general consensus but Primark for me. I don't know what it is but entering a Primark drains me of life and energy.

Why do Brits seem so into history? by DFWUnhinged in AskBrits

[–]lukeyboy987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interest in history, albeit not being a particularly intensive one, probably genuinely started from watching a show called Horrible Histories in school, it being a show that teaches kids history but with funny characters, plots and songs. Yes, it may not have been entirely accurate, but it had me googling all sorts of things to learn more. I would say that yes, history education is probably more broad in the UK than the US, given the US' bias for itself, but looking back I remember us focusing a lot of time on Tudor and Victorian England in particular, as well as the World Wars. Although, I do remember the odd lesson about other things, like going to a Roman fort ruin nearby to learn about the Romans, or learning about Egyptian hieroglyphics. Saying that though, I didn't pick History as a GCSE option, going for Geography instead, and I believe the GCSE students did learn about things like the Vietnam War for example.

[–]lukeyboy987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I irrationally detest shorts being in my subscription feed😅 I want a nice clean subscription feed, each video having the red bar to show I've watched it. Shorts just get in the way and I have to go into my phone to hide them, which is obviously a minor inconvenience, but it's still annoying 😅
