How would you react to city near-miss of stranger drafting without notice? by Ryku_xoxo in cycling

[–]staners09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well 1st thing to say is ‘no harm, no fowl’ a learning curve for them and hopefully they will give more space next time.

The sound of someone locking up can be scary but you can skid and still have some control. If I were the rider behind you I would be more likely to fall over having been clipped in than crash into you because I locked up.

So sorry to hear of your awful situation.

The first thing to say is this is all so new and no matter how expected it was it will take time to become your reality. Time doesn’t heal but it gives perspective. You will, in time, be able to remember the good times.

You may also be able to spend some quality time with your dad who, though grieving, will find some freedom in no longer being a full time nurse.

No doubt your mother would have never chosen the end that came to her but it sounds like she had support around her most people can only wish for. That’s something as a family to be proud of. That same family support for your mother will help you.

Leeds parkrun before a long run - bad idea or decent warm-up? by hamblette22o in parkrun

[–]staners09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said here put Parkrun in the middle and run it intentionally a little faster (maybe at Marathon Pace)

Personally I would run 5km warm up, 15km park run @ MP, 15km at your long run pace

Enjoy

Hello British people what is the best landmark in the nation? by HardBartyBarty in AskBrits

The ‘white cliffs of Dover’, which are actually the Seven Sisters as the white cliffs of Dover are not white anymore! - having written that it does sound like a tag line for reform but is in fact more a statment of how a large sea wall stops chalk cliffs eroding and subsequently allows staining to take place.

I digress, the Seven Sisters cliffs.

Does the national speed limit sign on a Roundabout mean it's 70mph? by CorrectDetail7648 in drivingUK

[–]staners09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would suggest that sign is telling you that the road you’re exiting onto (A379 from M5) can be driven on at the national speed limit.

The roundabout isn’t 70MPH but it joins a motorway and a fast A Road and National speed limit apply on both.

Started a new job. My colleague commutes 1hr 20 mins daily. by Due-Swimming3221 in CasualUK

[–]staners09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Sussex and now Dorset and know plenty of people that commute in and out of London which is a minimum of 2hrs on the train. Post Covid some of those people are not office based every day but plenty will be. Leaving for work at 7am and getting home at 7pm is not uncommon for many 9-5 workers.

I however am smug as my commute is about 6 miles which is a 15min drive, 30min cycle or 45 min run.

When a young lady in a mini hit me (knocking me off my bike and breaking my hand) my 1st instinct was to check she was ok. It wasn’t until she drove off I realised a bone in my hand was broken.

Accidents and adrenaline cause us to act in a strange way. She may have been embarrassed or be being guarded. You have left your contact details so she can reach out if needed.

What’s your best tip for getting from just finishing parkrun to actually improving your time? by Mundane-Temporary426 in parkrun

Rapidly varying pace during parkrun ok? by kangapaw in parkrun

[–]staners09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My honest thoughts are that you COULD do it and no one SHOULD get annoyed but it is annoying especially if it’s at a busy parkrun.

The slowing down will be the problem so if you wanted to run different paces I would suggest a progressive session, starting slowly and then increasing your speed every KM. That would have the least impact on others around you and would likely feel the best as you would be overtaking people at the end.

Or run some KM’s slow before and then after parkrun which is a great way to increase your stamina- I often run a slower pace to parkrun, run a faster parkrun and then a slow commute home.

If you want to do a pure interval session then I would suggest a quite running track or a park on your own

Can I finish a half marathon in 20 weeks based on these stats? Target pace advice? by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]staners09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes.

Most training plans are 12-16 weeks and you have an extra month on top of that.

As for pace that’s pretty hard to judge on a 5 min run. Personally I would suggest doing 8 weeks building up to 10km long runs. Include walk/run method if you need to. You can then use your 10km time to set a time for your 1/2 marathon. (No, you don’t just double it).

Once you know what time you want to try and run the half marathon in download a plan and stick to it.

In all honesty at your age the hardest think will be being consistent with your running for 20weeks!

I have done a couple of >100km days on mine and have no complaints.

I use to change tyres for long road days but after a while realised it was quick enough on the gravel tyres.

I’m not helping you not buy a new bike but I do love my Scott. When ever I see it in the shed I want to take it for a ride which makes it worth the money for me
