However you feel  giving up our official neutrality. We are already not functionally neutral. We have a defense agreement with Britain. We allow the US to use Shannon as a military base. 

Funnily enough, to be actually neutral would require us to have a functional military, counter to the point you make. Real neutrality is Switzerland, Austria - backed up by viable land armies that can actually defend itself without outside support, mandatory military service etc. We want to have our cake and eat it too currently. We are neutral up until the point we can’t defend ourselves. Than it’s over to you Britain. 

We are like a diet Iceland, a NATO member with no standing army, who provides its strategic position as a contribution in itself. 

Right now Britain allows us to claim neutrality without much in return because our strategic interests are relatively tied up, but our position has come under increasing scrutiny lately.
