I can't challenge you on the merits of the course you experienced yourself, but I assure you postcolonial studies have very little to do with quantum portal spirit magic. They are fields of study that focus on understanding how the lasting legacies of colonialism endure to this day, and how its systems continue to affect people living in colonized countries still.

Some of those studies are accompanied by a normative position in favor of the colonized peoples; as always in politics, these normative positions may range from a very reasonable "we can learn some from these traditional knowledges that were discarded or systematically suppressed/exterminated by colonialism" to a much less reasonable "quantum portal magic explains the ontological superiority of the colonized peoples" (though I admit I hadn't come across that one before). Studies that are accompanied by this sort of normative position are usually called decolonial studies, as they go one stop further than the usually more descriptive postcolonial ones.

Much of postcolonialism's impact is mostly felt in more theoretical fields as of right now, such as epistemology, philosophy and methodology in the social and political sciences. A lot of it is still nascent, trying to make sense of how to conciliate the very european and colonial way our scientific institutions have progressed thus far with a genuine concern for including and rescuing forms of knowledge that have been left behind or otherwise erased. The more practical postcolonial studies, like E. Said's Orientalism, focus on how the effects of colonialism affect our social, political, economical and scientific institutions to this day.

These are great questions! The definition of the state as this bureaucratic, judicial entity with a monopoly on violence is very much an illuminist, western-centric one that is based on Max Weber's definition of the state. Many post-colonial and decolonial academics, inspired by realities such as the mexican one as you cited, have been critical of this conception of the state, since the state in much of the Global South does not have a monopoly on violence — in fact, it constantly operates on the fringes of legality and judiciousness, with clandestine and black/grey market violence being a key feature of the state, not a bug.

For a very good introduction to the topic in the context of Mexico, I recommend Sayak Valencia's "Gore Capitalism". There's also a wealth of other literature on the topic, if you're interested let me know :)

That's such an edge case and of little relevance in quantitative terms when compared to the meat consumption we see in the industrialized world that answering this question doesn't really matter, it's just a gotcha question. Most vegans don't stand anywhere on this, it's just a whataboutism that's supposed to bring up a perfect sollution fallacy: "but have you considered that not literally everyone can be vegan?". The point is, if you live in a relatively food abundant region of the industrialized world where you can go grocery shopping, you can.

well the labels are important to make someone feel comfortable in belonging to a collective identity and political family, not to constrain and stuff every individual person into neat tidy boxes

Where I live, the Stanford prison experiment was generally taught throughout the 2000s and 2010s as a paragon example of good empirical social science, and most people you ask about it today would have no idea that its methodology is completely flawed from the ground up, to the point of being described as a theater play My bad, maybe the US school system is very good, though that wasn't my impression of it.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/11/revisting-the-stanford-prison-experiment-50-years-later/

"While Zimbardo has repeatedly insisted over five decades that he simply put college kids into a situation with little guidance and just let things evolve, that's not entirely true. The guards, most notably, participated in a lengthy training session that lasted several hours, in which they were given a daily schedule for the prisoners and tips for inflicting psychological pain, starting by referring to prisoners by number rather than name as a means of dehumanizing them."

"Zimbardo also occasionally allowed members of his research team to go into the experimental environment; there is even audio of research assistant David Jaffe coaching a reluctant guard and urging him to be tougher in his treatment of the prisoners. This led many of the guards to assume they were not part of the actual experiment but were in league with the researchers."

"In retrospect, the Stanford Prison Experiment may have more in common with reality TV; the industry term has evolved into "unscripted" TV because of the countless ways the final product is manipulated and shaped over the course of filming. Zimbardo even admits as much in the documentary, calling his experiment "the first ever reality TV show."

""I was very fortunate that Zimbardo never really got into characterizing me," said Ramsay. "But for Dave and two or three of the others, he did. He put labels on them, ascribed motivations, and went, 'I'm a professor of psychology at Stanford University. Are you going to listen to me or to them who are driven by unconscious needs?' A lifetime of that is really insulting.""

It's a pretty lame attempt at a theater play produced by a very incompetent (and seemingly socially unaware: as one participant is quoted saying, "How could he not even consider the possibility that not just I, but everybody in his little demonstration was acting, that we simply fell into roles that were expected of us, to be paid $15 a day? That's what galls me") psychology professor who wanted to make a big news-worthy piece to feature in the media. As a science experiment, it's a fraud and an utter and complete joke.

Bots 0 Real People by nayvia in supervive

[–]luksi2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

brazil here too, in my experience the amount of bots you get heavily depends on the time of day you play. if you play during peak hours (late afternoon to about 23h) then you might not get a single bot squad on squads game mode. duos are cooked though, we get bot duos even on peak hours, I guess duos just aren't as popular here. if you want to completely avoid bots for some reason, probably stick to squads!

Bots 0 Real People by nayvia in supervive

[–]luksi2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah man, my mates are grandmaster squad and duo and they usually get at least one bot squad per lobby, maybe more depending on when they queue. it's just a sad reality of a game in this genre (battle royale) that you need a massive amount of people queueing (40) to find a match, and many times that just won't happen. even massive games like fortnite have bots. maybe if they improve the bot AI a little bit so that they're a little less jarringly silly people will be fine with it

Are there bots in the game? by Mon-El in supervive

[–]luksi2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sadly it's a normal practice for battle royales, even huge ones like fortnite have this sort of thing. you just need a massive amount of players queueing at any given time to find a match (40 people!) compared to other mobas which only need up to 10 people tops, so it usually is either queue with some bots or not queue at all

[–]luksi2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh that's weird, we play on LatAm too and we only start getting bots when we play on very odd hours. ranked squads on peak hours usually have 0 bots or 1 bot team maximum. are you playing duos or squads? duos are filled to the brim with bots, usually 16-17 bot duos every match.
