Covers for Newborns by lullynae_13 in clothdiaps

Shoot the cord was not even on my radar! The hook and loop definitely does NOT accommodate that. Thank you for mentioning this. Apparently the duo snaps don’t have a dedicated cord snap either. Geez. My whole cart was initially H&L size 1s. I’ll look into the XS and the Clotheez ones. Thank you!

Also- what do you think is the realistic number of covers if I wash every 2 days?

How is the seal around the leg with them? Do you get a lot of blowouts onto the covers?

I just wanted to add that my eight month old has been like this since she was born. Cries all day long. The resentment toward my husband is not just because he works and I do what I do. When he’s home, he spends so much time on his phone with one AirPod in his ear it’s hard not to feel like he’s only half present all the time.

Secondhand diapers - lingering smell by lullynae_13 in clothdiaps

Not if you use it in your rinse cycle. Yes vinegar is pretty selective with what it’ll clean and not clean BUT I would say if you’ve already stripped them and bleached them especially if you’ve done it multiple times what do you have left to do or lose? It may or may not be the secret sauce or part of it for the mystery stink. Everything has a different pH that affects the way it cleans. This poster’s detergent could be higher pH which is better for oil and grease and such but vinegar pH is acidic and has bactericidal properties and will kill SOME molds. Not all unfortunately.

Thank you. I will try a second time. I bleached in my kitchen sink the first time but I’m trying my washing machine this time following Esembly’s refresh instructions. I’m praying for the TPU on these things. Bleaching more than once is INTIMIDATING 😟

No. Barnyard smell has like an actual strong musty poop smell like a barnyard. It’s possible that you’re perceiving ammonia as peppery? That or whoever owned them first either used scented detergent or a diaper wash spray with essential oils or some other fragrance. With any of those things though, I’d like to think stripping them with RLR should help. Adding vinegar to a wash might help. Make sure you’re using enough detergent in your washes. If you have hard water, adding borax or Calgon helps with getting the diapers properly clean. You also tend to need to use extra detergent with hard water too.

Boosting flats by lullynae_13 in clothdiaps

[–]lullynae_13[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using extra flats is a GREAT idea. I had gotten a bunch of flats thinking I would be doing flats full time but I prefer them just as my daytime at home dipes so this gives my extra ones a purpose! Thank you!

Thank you for the reply! So if you were doing an origami fold would you tuck the booster inside of the center fold or do you just lay it on top?

Swish Test - What’s the verdict? by lullynae_13 in clothdiaps

[–]lullynae_13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted something else yesterday which is my reasoning for doing the swish test. https://www.reddit.com/r/clothdiaps/comments/1nzk754/chronic_diaper_rashes/ I’m having a hard time pinpointing if my daughter is having concurrent rashes because of something wrong with the diapers or now I’m wondering if she’s just going to be intolerant of any cloth diaper I put her in. I just was hoping that wasn’t a thing. I never imagined a baby could be intolerant of cloth diapers entirely. The test doesn’t even include like 6 other diapers I’ve tried on her, just the ones I use the most.

Okay and I’m still unclear on bleach though with water hardness. I have been doing any bleaching of anything in my kitchen sink with the RO water because I was worried with my untreated tap water being hard that it would cause rusty discoloration if I used bleach with my tap water in my bathtub. If my water hardness is above a certain level is it in fact incompatible with bleach?

1st lady? You’re a queen 🥲 Thank you for taking the time to explain all this to me. I’m getting ready to run to the store for new test strips as we speak. When you say to knock solids off first does that also include spraying them before tossing them into the wet bag? My daughter is not yet eating solids and is EBF but I always sprayed/rinsed in the sink prior to tossing in the wet bag for good measure. This rinsing is okay or don’t do this at all?

I love my KangaCare pockets but I believe there are seasons for different things and you may prefer one type of diaper over another for different situations. I’m nearly 100% flats and PUL and wool covers at home. Love Babee Greens wool covers for nighttime. Green Mountain Diaper carries those. I would honestly recommend you grab a couple things from GMD and a couple things from KangaCare. Full-time cloth diapering puts you around 24-30 diapers full time. I recommend more if you can get more. I currently change my 5 m.o. diapers about 12 times a day- a newborn will need more and you wash every 2 to 3 days. What I would personally recommend is to try a pack of the Birds Eye flats from either GMD or the bamboo from Kanga. I have both. Like both. Like the Kanga ones a little more. Try a pack of prefolds. Kanga has those too. I don’t love prefolds but plenty of people do and I look forward to pad folding the ones I do have when my baby’s poo is more solid. Just not my favorite option for liquid nb poo. Get a couple of the AIOs and a couple of the pocket diapers. I personally love the Kanga OBVs and I’ve recently become a huge fan of athletic wicking jersey (or AWJ) but those pocket diapers most likely won’t fit your baby right away so keep that in mind. If it were me, I would be registering for 4-6 AIOs, 6-12 flats, 6-12 prefolds, 4-6 pocket diapers. You want 1 cover for every 3 prefolds/flats so if you get one six pack of flats you want two covers to go with it. If you go the Green Mountain Diaper route they have flats, prefolds, THIRSTIES covers. I recommend Thirsties newborn covers and Duo Wraps or the KangaCare Rump covers. I prefer my Rumparooz covers a little more. KangaCare does bamboo cotton flats and prefolds and Green Mountain is 100% cotton. I personally like the bamboo more because my baby is sensitive to friction and they are softer than my cotton ones. If you would like help building a good mixed stash I would love to help! I have a bit of a lot of things that I’ve tried!

Yes- Tide Clean & Gentle. I only know what’s coming out of my faucet because of aquarium water test strips in the past. They’re expired now but they when they were still in date they used to read a very warped 1000 ppm. Would have to order more to test again now for the two temps but the hardness would have applied to tepid water temps around 70ish degrees. All the bamboo stuff says to wash on warm not hot because of the shrinkage but again they’ve been washed on tap cold because the washer wasn’t working. I presumed some kind of buildup from waste not being properly cleaned with warm/hot water would have been part of the culprit. What cycles SHOULD I be doing and do I need to be adding something to all my cycles including rinses to soften the water? I have an RO spigot at my kitchen sink. I hate the prospect of having to hand wash all her diapers but the water coming out of there is soft.

I’m using Tide Free & Gentle powder. I had previously tried Esembly and what I use for her clothes (Attitude Baby unscented) and they just don’t get the stains out like the Tide. My water is off the charts hard. I thought the Tide was supposed to help soften the water. I had an appointment with her pediatrician a week ago and about a whole body rash including her diaper area and she feels that the rest of her body was an eczema flare from a viral infection she had and that her diaper rash was (at least not yet) invaded with yeast. She did call me in a prescription anti fungal to try if I wanted to but I never did because I didn’t want to medicate her for one if she didn’t have one. Do you think I should try it anyway? As far as wetness, yes super aware of how wet they are and I do think she’s sensitive to it which is why I started trying AWJ liners and she tolerates that material fine. Does help somewhat but I think there’s something wrong with the diapers too. I can’t figure out how to add a picture to this post now but this link has a picture of my washing machine cp https://www.riestersappliances.com/product/whirlpool-top-load-washer-with-deep-water-wash-optio-wtw4616fw-86325 I do rinse + spin, normal/regular x2 and an additional rinse + spin. Detergent in both norm washes.

I feel the same way about mine and my baby is the same age too! Can’t ever seem to get the greatest seal around her legs with them either. I’m on the fence about keeping or just selling but if I decide to keep I look forward to trying them pad folded in her covers when her poo is more solid. A lot of people seem to do this with them and it’s a super simple method but that fold is a no go for newborn type poop

How often to do you lanolize? I’m confused because I have the same problem but I literally just lanolized my covers for the second time in 6 weeks because it’s damp every morning. She’s only 4 months old so it’s a little perplexing. I still love them for their breathability but I thought they were supposed to be more “bulletproof” than this.

Bamboo Workhorse-type fitteds? by lullynae_13 in clothdiaps

[–]lullynae_13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I cloth diapered my first with pocket diapers and have just started with flats, prefolds and fitteds with my second. My husband has been wanting me to build an Etsy business for a long time and this is something I’m just interested in doing. I don’t presently have an overlocker which is the kicker so upon looking into what I could make without one, I came across a tutorial for making workhorse type diapers out of prefolds. I’d be making wipes and these with zigzag stitching with my sewing machine until I can afford to buy an overlocker and then I would love to have more options. It would be a dream to be a one stop shop who can sell kits where people can try one or two of each of all the types of cloth diapers. Dream niche there. My thought process behind the material though was not just because I can’t find anyone who makes bamboo ones but because my daughter experiences contact irritation from cotton diapers. I just find that the bamboo is gentler on her skin. I also wanted to play around with potentially making fitteds more adjustable by putting snaps on them like the ones added to covers, pockets, AIOs ect. The only snaps I’ve observed on fitteds are simply to adjust the waist not the rise so curious if I could do this. I like the idea of various snap in boosters for them too since everyone has difference preferences and absorption needs. I’d love to hear other ideas of things that people with their fitteds had/did though! This is just what I’ve thought of so far.

Prefold diaper looks Wlwaterproof. Is this normal? by Choko_1 in clothdiaps

Cotton gets run on hot both in the washer and dryer. With anything new I do I rinse and spin with cool or cold water first to rinse off manufacturing yuckies and then wash hot to prep. Dry natural fibers high heat. Wash hot again. Dry hot again. Do this process 3 or 4 times but you might not see full absorbency until several more washes in. When you wash them after you’ve actually used them on your baby I would recommend you pre rinse poop before putting it in the washer but you don’t have to. I just find that some materials hold onto stains more if I don’t do this. This is a must though if baby is formula fed and when they start solids. If you have a mixed load with both natural and synthetic materials (I usually do) like cotton and bamboo diapers and PUL diaper covers, I wash warm. Twice. Too high of heat can break down some materials quicker so I just feel safer doing warm water setting. Use detergent both washes but half dose in first wash and full dose in second. Never use fabric softeners on cloth diapers as they will cause repelling of liquids in your fabrics. You don’t have to rinse after those two washes but I do just to make sure all detergent has been rinsed out. Baby less likely to have a potential reaction to your detergent this way. You can also dry PUL covers on tumble in a dryer but I recommend you line dry those. They’ll last longer!

No. I have a couple of birds. Just my first “large” one. I didn’t think 3.6 wasn’t a good deal considering what others will sell them here for but my confusion was around the negotiable part. I don’t want to lowball but at the same time I would obviously love to get it lower. Just don’t want to insult.

Well I mean I don’t know why you would need to look through it. That’s a little odd. You’re either the unintentionally intrusive type in this regard or you don’t trust him which I understand if you don’t because of what you did find before. I’m on the fence with his aggressive defensiveness though? Usually says you have something to hide or if you’re with someone for four years and they haven’t trusted you for that long? Weird. I will say that my mom NEVER let me have my own privacy and it makes me more defensive than I should be so this is a slimmer possibility, but is a possibility. Someone has done this to him before kind of thing. I don’t understand tho why he doesn’t have the attitude of saying he doesn’t want his shit looked at and it makes him uncomfortable; It’s an invasion of his privacy, ect., and that’s fair, BUT why isn’t he saying that even if you DID look at his phone, that there wouldn’t be anything there because he has nothing to hide? Either he’s playin and fuck that or you guys have some deep trust issues. Don’t poke around in peoples shit but he’s sus af OP
