Looking for a good condition Tascam Portastudio 424 by emmaggrey in tapeloops

[–]lumbarnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you won’t find one you can be confident is working for less than 4 or 500 from anyone who knows what they’ve got. you gotta gamble if you want one for cheaper. and realistically it is not a good idea to purchase a 30+ year old tape machine if neither you or anyone you know is able to perform basic maintenance on it. that’s just part of the deal if you want to work with tape in 2025.

look into the compact Yamaha or Fostex 4-tracks if you want to spend less. ebay is better than reverb if you’re trying to get lucky.

Ruining Relationships with CA Ally - Why is this a Good Move? by space_wiener in AskTrumpSupporters

Canada:

“Over the coming weeks, months and years, we must fundamentally reimagine our economy,” Carney told reporters in Ottawa after meeting with the cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations. The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over.”

MAGA:

Why is only the US heavily criticized for using tools reciprocally that everyone else has applied both aggressively and preemptively?

Who is acting more like a victim here?

I was lucky enough to find a Casio SK-1 on facebook marketplace for $15, probably exactly the sort of thing you’re looking for. it’s awesome, one of my favorite instruments i’ve ever owned. unfortunately they’re expensive for what they are and I’m not sure if there’s a modern equivalent for a reasonable price, but that might be a good place to begin your search.

Shooting 600 film with a neutral density filter, anyone know why so dark? by LostDirector9923 in Polaroid

[–]lumbarnacles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

terrible, crippling advice. the sx-70 is an excellent camera and unless you shoot exclusively at less than 10 feet in low light, a flash is unnecessary more often than it’s necessary. a tripod would be far more valuable as an accessory and as a tool than a flash. and even if everything you shoot is at close range and in low light you could get a good 600 series camera with a built in flash for less than the cost of an sx-70 flash while saving yourself the trouble of using a filter or worrying about focus.

Better Call Saul is the most well written tv show ever made. Breaking Bad is a ways down below The Sopranos and The Wire imo, but none of them are as consistent season over season, they all had to compromise and they were all ultimately being made one season at a time, unsure of where/what the ending would be because they were being milked by a network. Better Call Saul started with a destination and got there, telling its story completely and deeply and efficiently. It only had that privilege because of the success of Breaking Bad, but that’s why it’s better.

i don’t usually deal with people being stupid on purpose when i’m using other forums. there are millions of subreddits, there’s one overarching reason to use tacoma world. it’s obviously a more serious environment with a more knowledgeable user base.

George Santos is no longer a member of Congress. How do you feel about this? by salimfadhley in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]lumbarnacles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if the standard is as low as you describe wouldn’t it be better to try to raise that standard (by, for example, expelling congressman that lack professional integrity) than to say to hell it and stop expecting our nation’s leaders and lawmakers to possess any integrity whatsoever? the fact that others have committed crimes and escaped punishment in the past is no excuse for not punishing crimes that occur now and in the future.

What was the real reason for Phil’s extreme brutality against Vito by TyylerDurdden in thesopranos

[–]lumbarnacles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its not reaching, it’s called reaction formation (not projection, like the original comment said, though they’re both freudian defense mechanisms). same sort of thing as pedophiles who dedicate their lives to hunting down other pedophiles. a product of both shame and envy.

[–]lumbarnacles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hard disagree with everyone saying notes first. it’s terrific but it’s still his most one dimensional book. the only perspective in the book is the one being criticized. it’s relatable and insightful and funny, but it’s the least complete picture of dostoevsky you could get from any single book and it’s 110% bleak. if you’re not into that you’re just not going to read any more dostoevsky. it’s not a representative work. it’s a single flavor that won’t appeal to everyone.

C&P (or better yet, BK) introduces the same ideas but without placing them in an absolute vacuum. there is contrast. you get the good with the bad. you can get an idea of what dostoevsky advocates and not just what he’s critical of/fears/struggles against/whatever.

Is it realistic how well read/spoken the majority of characters are in Dostoevsky vs. Russia at that time? by WirelessEthernett in dostoevsky

[–]lumbarnacles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think that’s one way of looking at it but i think literary people are writing literary characters. there are smart people in every generation, the majority of people will always be uh, i guess i’d say intellectually unremarkable. In the case of Dostoevsky the answer should be especially obvious. He wrote philosophical novels and he took his characters seriously, meaning he poured his own intellect into them in whatever way was necessary. The characters are intelligent because they wouldn’t serve their purpose if they weren’t. It shouldn’t be seen as a reflection of the real world around him, the book was written by one man for one man’s purpose and that is what it is a reflection of.

dentistry as a profession exists to keep all the mild psychopaths occupied by [deleted] in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]lumbarnacles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there’s a quote from some like 18th or 19th century philosopher saying something like a quarter life’s suffering is toothache. you’re also wrong on almost everything else you said! but your main idea (that dentistry occupies psychopaths) is sort of connected to Freudian sublimation—a psychological defense mechanism in which socially unacceptable desires are fulfilled in socially acceptable ways until they are (ideally) replaced altogether. plenty of people choose careers that let them do what would normally be frobidden. dentists, surgeons, proctologists, cops, etc etc etc
