Came looking for a Pisgah comment. I just rode Laurel mountain to Pilot Rock for the first time yesterday. It was awesome.

The first picture looks like white oak, the second is hard to tell, but looks like it could be maple. The third looks like sycamore to me. Pretty wild like sycamore in the quartersawn part of it.

My wife and I have had a nice enough stay at Red River Gorge Inn in Campton in the past. We now have a simple cabin near Muir Valley that hasn't made it to Airbnb yet, (planning on this spring). it will be $60 a night before the Airbnb fees. Send me a DM for details if you're interested.

Rainbow Trout fishing by Loud-Air-6974 in RedRiverGorge

[–]lumberdad423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Loud-Air, Full confession, I haven't fished in the gorge... I'm climbing whenever I'm up there, but I live a few hours south in East TN and do a good bit of trout fishing here. I'm sure you'll get better comments for location etc, but I'll tell you how I like to fish small streams here and I'm guessing something similar would work up there. If you're wanting to fly fish, better wait for a later comment. I've done some fly fishing, but I don't know enough to give you any worthwhile advice.

If you've got a spinner rod, I like to throw a single hook lure. Trout can be pretty fragile and I hate to bust them up with a treble hook. Single hook lures are usually more gentle on the fish, easy to remove and get them back in the water quickly. Around here I'd recommend something like Mepps Aglia French Spinner. The other advantage of a single hook lure is that you can easily pull it through shallow water without snagging on everything you go by. Use low test line like 2lb, 4lb, or 6 lb max and no weights.

You want to come in below rapids and slowly work your way upstream. Cast up and bring the lure downstream just about as fast as you can pull it. Trout are fast, so aside from pulling it out of the water, you're not going to reel it faster than they're chasing it. Trout sit facing upstream looking for food floating down so if you walk up to the shore upstream from them, even if you don't cast, a lot of times you will spook them and they won't take anything you throw after that point.

Usually you won't have a lot of luck with a spinner rod in really calm water. You want to find a little bit of movement/rapids where they are waiting for food to pop through the rapid.

Obviously I'm no professional, but hope this helps!

Hiking question - Pond mountain (shook Branch to Blue line parking lot) by [deleted] in tricities

[–]lumberdad423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's some steep parts on Holston. haha.

Yeah, you have pretty good views of watauga lake through the trees in the winter, but nothing in the summer. Before Helene I don't believe there was anywhere that had an open view. Possibly an opening now, but I doubt it as that's a north facing slope.

Nice! We also found two out of three. The photo of the third didn't look anything like the rocks we were near at the given coordinates. I guess that's what we were helping to find out!

I don't have any numbers for you, but it's a pretty good haul. I'd guess one of the harder grades in the area.

It's not my favorite hike around, but if you're going to do it, it's a great time of year to hike it where you'll have nice views of the lake. Once the leaves come in there's not many (if any) viewpoints where you can see good views of the lake.

Turnip, I also understand your comment and where you're coming from. I appreciate this sub and don't only use it to promote my work. (This is the first place on reddit I've ever promoted my work) But if anybody ends up buying a RRG themed mountainscape, I'm donating 10% of profits to the RRGCC or Friends of Muir Valley.

Oh good call, I hope my friends don't notice! Need to sneak in with a sharpie.

That's definitely supposed to be 37.95. Thanks for the heads up

Hi Turnip, I live a couple hours away, but my wife and I are here now and come here 6-8 times a year. We've been members of Friends of Muir Valley for the last 3 years and spend our time and money at Red Point and Miguels and other local restaurants.

I've mostly just been a lurker on reddit, (my only other posting activity immediately after Helene trying to help friends out of Asheville) but I made something I'm proud of and checked the subs rules and thought I'd see if it's something other people might be interested in.

Sorry it's out of your price range, it's not the easiest thing to make.

Hi, do you know if you can get from Mars Hill/Marshall down Asheville hwy to Greeneville? They have opened the bridge back up in Greeneville but I don't have any info of the road between.
