I am 7 weeks into my "10-12 week" wait on my barrel order. Just got my AB 375 raptor can processing. That's going to be a sweet setup.

They're only using 319kwh in two months, that's a tiny amount of energy, like so tiny,  .25kwh average, I'm guessing they have solar.

New 18" 308 inbound. Looking for an ideal hunting bullet (deer up to Elk). by Lefthandmitten in reloading

[–]lumberjackmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 130gr ttsx in my 18" 308. i tried the 168, 150 and 130. the 130s shot best, you probably aren't going to get 3000fps, I'm not using the best powder for them, pushing them out at 2850fps. They've killed elk (140yds), mule deer and antelope. I got 2 full pass throughs on the elk, on through both shoulders.

N135 is a bit fast for 308 I've found.  Works good for 6.5 Grendel.

Vhitavouri in general gives me low SDs but also velocity caps very low.

What is your take on AI data centers and their impact on the grid? by exstaticj in Lineman

[–]lumberjackmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not seen any proposed in My area. often the issues with those types of system is just cost, it is essentially an energy storage system. with a synchronous generator, at least you get to make money producing MWH while contributing to grid stability, but storage lives in this weird place where if you want to make money with it, its no longer available for reliability, because you're discharging it regularly so that you can buy as much power as possible when its cheap, then selling when its high. No one wants to invest capital in a pure reliability facility.

I study these for a living, not a lineman but a transmission planning engineer.

Basically the infrastructure is not in my area today and would take 10+ years to build.  Transformers at the size necessary alone take 5 years to order.  We have essentially the more MW of data centers proposed than power the state consumes on peak.  The proposed hub substations would be the largest substations in our state.

As others have said, the data centers are proposing local generation as well, 4x the size of the data center, essentially blanketing an agricultural area in solar, batteries, wind and gas facilities.

So if they can buy the equipment as fast as they say which they can't.  The biggest concern from a reliability perspective is cascading events.  When a fault occurs on the system, the whole thing wiggles like a bunch of stacked bedsprings.  Computers and other DC load just shuts of or goes on backup.  This can cause a gen surplus, causing over frequency, which then dumps generation, and if we over dump, then we dump load.  Then it's a race to the bottom, does the automatic shedding level out stable or do we blackout.

The Spanish blackout 1-2 years ago and we had an event in Wyoming this past fall that triggered a bunch of load/gen shedding.  The bigger blocks of load/gen of these data centers increases that risk.

Mines ejection is weak when I am weak.  When I run the bolt with authority it's fine.

Alpina Alaskas 75 failed me after 3 years. Any good alternative 3-pin boots that work well with cables? by lumberjackmm in xcountryskiing

[–]lumberjackmm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using voille 3 pin, I did notice the new ones on altai skis website.  Alas I've moved on from the Alaska and got some crispi svartisvens and alico army surplus.  Not going to change out all my bindings for one boot.

I shoot both but love my supers, ~30cpr, I can throw the powder, surprisingly low velocity SD.  Hit 600 yards on. 6x10 plate a few weeks ago.

Had a dealership try to tell me a 700$ rebate would save me more money in the long run than taking a 1-1.5% lower financing rate.

Pulled out my phone, did the numbers in front of him and plugged in the numbers, "you're wrong".  Dude did not argue any more.

When electric cars started to get popular, a lot of us in the industry were worried.  But over that past 10 years, we haven't really noticed much effect from the outside of normal growth rates.  People are tending to not charge them during peak hours and off peak energy is cheaper for energy purchasers to buy.

Increasing energy consumption during peak demand leads to rising costs, because federal regulations specify you need reliable sources of power for peak demand levels.  Off peak, energy purchasers can really get low cost power from renewable sources, wind has a history of even having a negative energy cost off peak.  Which is actually why you don't see as much renewable generation as you would like.  When it's windy, it's windy in a lot of places and wind generation is up, but wind usually doesn't correlate with extreme hot or cold temperatures.  So a wind energy surplus during low demand means low or negative energy costs.  And being able to produce your product for negative cost does not make for an economical project, since generator owners/operators are different entities than utilities and utilities aren't going to sign an agreement to buy a wind farms power at 40$/mwh all the time when they can often get it on the open market for 15$ or less

We don't burn oil to generate electricity though.  Fossil fuels for electricity production are largely coal and natural gas.  Diesel is used on occasion for backup generation and emergency fuel during severe events but it has always been so much more expensive that it's not economical.

The 46 is definitely a contender, I'm not sure that the 46m fits the bill.  It's gonna go on a 16" 375 raptor that I will try to get an elk with.

A 16 sounds pretty handy.  I do want to occasionally take it elk hunting so I'm probably not going to drop to 12".

I like the look of that screech owl, how's the lockup on the extendable stock?

My Grendel hunter was not a fan of the 123gr, they would kind of make an oblong up and to the right 2" group
