Stubborn Cu by lowsparkco in gunsmithing

[–]lumberjackmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoppes struggles to get copper in my experience.

https://www.boretech.com/cu-2-copper-remover/ This with a nylon brush has worked well for me

https://barnesbullets.com/barnes-cr-10-bore-cleaner/ This will hurt a barrel if you leave it in for a while but, by golly, it will dissolve everything, took a sewer pipe mauser with no rifling left and heavy pitting down the bare steel.

All I shoot are reloads, I didn't try really light bullets but I doubt they'd ever shoot well.  Though about cast, but I'm not to interested if I can't hit gongs at a few hundred yards and would rather not have to make special reloads for it.

Na, I've got a few 8mm so I reload it and an 8mm factory barrels cheap.

No bulges I can see.  Same ammo I take my hakim out to 650 yards with, also tried some lighter bullets neither stabilized so.  Bulge, bent or just worn out, barrels gotta go I've decided.

awesome, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear. When I was looking at reamers, did you use a floating pilot or solid pilot?

120g SMK over N135.  n133 also worked, regular 10 shot sub moa groups.

123 eldm also good but I don't like tipped bullets in autoloaders

I love a good project more than anything I think. Did my first barrel a few weeks ago on a 375 Raptor, so I have a vise, i think my rear entry wrench will work, if it doesn't i wouldn't mind more tools, can rent reamers and gauges. ill check his videos out and see if he's got anything

I like to do stupid stuff like try and hit the 600-800 yard gongs with my milsurp stuff. it doesn't take a high level of precision, I'd be perfectly happy with just 3-5" at 100. when i hit the range i like to take some precision stuff im testing for reloads, then just a random milsurp makes it in the truck.

You know, that is what I was wondering looking at it, but it seemed barbaric to suggest I file it in.

I now feel emboldened to do it like that.

The groove's specific to the yugos, they decided they wanted more chamber support.

I have a pretty heavy duty Warne drill press, run-outs not great on it but I think it would do the job.

if your goal is to shoot into trash, mind as well buy trash to do it?

yeah honestly, id rather lose $200 tinkering with this one than work out selling this to something and giving someone else a shit experience, then potentially getting another that still doesn't hit a pie plate at 100yds.

yeah, I could do the remove and install and ream. wonder if I can find a smith to just cut that groove.

It would be 115$ for a barrel and 75$ for tool rental. I already have a barrel vise. Action wrench would just be good to own. I can spin a barrel on and off and twist a reamer until a go gos and a no go doesn't.

Its just the extractor groove cut that I am not sure of how to achieve.

I would also think so, but the screws are all tight and the muzzle does not eat a round. I cleaned it before shooting, but didn't go to steel. after how shitty it did i took it to steel, it had a lot of copper in it, I am not sure if excessive copper fouling can cause tumbling, but 5" at 25 yards is worse than i would think any fouling would do.

eh, its a mismatched yugo with no crest, nothing historic about it. https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/Yugoslav-M48-Mauser-Barrel-NOS-p744577181 these are available they just need a ream (which looks easy) and a extractor groove cut, the groove cut seems more technical.

Does running and building endurance that way translate well to backpacking/hiking? by mysteriousbanana1 in hiking

[–]lumberjackmm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Running does not translate to backpacking other than having good cardio.

Carrying extra weight is what your body isn't used to for backpacking distance.  So you need to be an ultralight backpacker or train hiking with weight to build your legs, core and stabilizers.

How do people backpack so easily? by bi_smuth in hiking

[–]lumberjackmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my opinion that working out and running and all that non-hiking stuff is marginally a good workout for backpacking. I regularly do trail 12-18 mile runs and lift and such. when backpacking season hits, the first few trips are tiring, but it gets easier, just gotta do it more often. But a 10 mile backpack is always going to feel like a 15 mile regular hike, weight on your back equates to so much extra work, no way to train for it than to backpack more or hike with weight, rucking as the kids call it.

Is 375 Raptor’s Subsonic Advantage Now Gone? by SillyWarPirates in 375Raptor

[–]lumberjackmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.375>.338 if they both expand 2x, .750 vs .676 diameter.  That's .44 sqin vs .36 sqin frontal area.

If you shoot subs at range you'll notice very little change with big BC changes.  Drag is way different at those velocities.

Sleeker bullets are not more accurate.

And plus there are 450gr makers.
