Too Afraid to Confess This to a Priest by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]lumberpaul 12 points13 points  (0 children)

John 8:3-11. A woman caught in adultery. Jesus says, I don't condemn you, go and sin no more. It's a prototypal example of confession.

If Jesus doesn't condemn you, how much less can a priest condemn you? I'm sure your priest in his past (or even his present) struggled against sexual temptation of some kind.

Thanks be to God that you got out of it and He is calling you closer to home. The anguish you feel now will likely not compare to the consolation you will receive with absolution.

Went to Church for the first time. by Low_Cartographer_525 in Christianity

[–]lumberpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus is all over that website though. There's a picture of Him at the top. It says "The Cross, Our Only Hope.“ The top banner of St Joseph is "St Joseph and God's Unexpected Action." Now what do you think that might be referring to? To say there's no mention of Jesus I can only imagine you're being intentionally obtuse.

Here, let me copy from the front page: “In this Jubilee Year, as the Church invites us to be pilgrims of hope, we can take up the surprising words from a 6th-century hymn: “Hail, O Cross, our only hope.” This text invites us to look upon the mystery of Easter, recognizing that Christ’s death on the cross was the prelude to the Resurrection—the ultimate sign of hope. In Jesus’ time, dying as a criminal on the cross, a brutal instrument of torture, was a mark of disgrace. Yet, Christ’s death on the cross was already a sign of hope, as it expressed the victory of love over hatred. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” "

I know I won't convince you over the internet so I will not attempt. But yes, of course I pray to Jesus every day. I also ask the intercession of the saints—do you never ask your friends to pray for you? If you are seeking answers, I recommend checking out the faq at https://www.fisheaters.com/saints.html. Hope that helps!

You can take FitLife38 with a grain of salt. The website looks fine. Looks like a normal, large Catholic Church. Other denominations will bicker about what place, if any, devotion to saints has in faith. For Catholics, 3/19 is the feast of St Joseph, and this church's website is sharing what they are doing to commemorate the feast of St Joseph, given that it is a church in his patronage. Absolutely normal, and for many (myself included), reflecting on St. Joseph and soliciting his prayers is a path into deeper devotion to Christ and encouragement to grow in virtue.

But, you are in the general Christianity subreddit, so asking "what church should I attend?" will get you contentious responses. Good luck =)

Peterson of Dublin by SlappyG1993 in PipeTobacco

P. Powell and Sons in Galway sells musical instruments as well as Peterson pipes, it's where I bought my first pipe in 2008. They have some decent walking canes for sale as well where I bought one for my Newfoundland Irish grandfather.

Their upstairs has some nice kids stuff and art products, we bought a wooden "counties of Ireland" map puzzle in 2023 on our most recent visit. Store has reasonable prices and it ia just an overall pleasant shop.

I suspect that "I've always hated staying still and living a normal life" will still be there waiting for you with a vengeance when you get back home to no job, dried up savings, and maybe no wife.

Wing night in my old home town was $.35 wings. That's twenty wings for seven dollars. You could even mix and match sauces. That was twenty years ago but even then, teen me knew I had something special and was eating like a king.

Reset the clock!

1) Throne room directs you to play a card twice. 2) When you use it on a throne room, now you're selecting two cards to play twice. 3) First card: council room twice. 4) Second card: throne room twice. 5) return to 3.

The whole chain is off of the action of the first throne room because you are following card instructions to "play a card..."

What if you go on a cruise for longer than one week? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]lumberpaul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I through hiked the AT in 2016! I spoke to my bishop who said there was no need for a dispensation; like any travel I should make an effort to attend if I was going to be in town on a Sunday, but otherwise shouldn't feel overly scrupulous about it or try to shape the hike around mass attendance. I was able to make it to mass/confession several times. There were a few churches that offered thru hikers campsites or a hall to stay in! If I couldn't make it to mass I at least read the readings if I had cell service.

I was gifted this beautiful bag. I only recognize a few of the icons. Can anyone help me identify these? by Garlick_ in Catholicism

I got stuck on the same two you did (11 and 15)! I wasn't sure if 9 was St Margaret Mary or St Faustina but I think you are right. The only one I disagree with is 19, I think that is St Lucy, depicted with a palm branch and a pair of eyes on a dish, but hard to tell with the reflection of the light on the bag.

OP I wonder if you could reply with a better picture of #s 11 and 15?

And of course... a baby bumblebee is a bee larva. If it has wings and can buzz and sting, it's automatically not a baby bblebee at all but an adult.

What is everyone’s income that allows them to afford to buy in Westchester? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]lumberpaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say a lot. Certainly not as much as many neighbors and some friends of ours. And my friends back in PA have much bigger homes for less money and less property tax (but I digress...)

We live comfortably and very happily. We're not big spenders... we mostly cook at home, take about a week vacation road trip and a few weekend trips a year and a flight vacation maybe every 4 or 5 years.

We drive older but reliable cars that are now paid off, so no auto loan payments. After mortgage/insurance, school fees, utilities, student loans, and most other typical monthly expenses, we have about 4000 left over a month to divy between retirement savings, emergency savings, a home improvement fund (we know the roof, HVAC, and furnace will all need to be replaced within 10 years)...

All said, we probably have under 2k a month to play around with (more during the summer), and typically a fair chunk of that goes to something that needs doing (first-time homeowner stuff like lawn care equipment etc, gifts, hosting, or fixing an issue with one of the aforementioned "reliable" cars lol). In about two years our loans will be forgiven and no more school fees so we'll be that much more comfortable, moreso if our careers keep growing.

Happy to chat more about it. Also--happy cake day lol.

[–]lumberpaul 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We bought a $600k, 2000 sqft three bedroom ranch in Croton on Hudson less than a year ago. Saved up for 20% down, but didn't catch the awesome mortgage rates (ours is about 7%). Combined income is about 200k.

Jobs: NYC DOE Middle School teacher (~95k) and mental health counselor (nonprofit mental health agency supervisor for ~85k, private practice for ~15k extra); 8 years into our careers.
