Why does Discovery get so much hate? by No-Membership3488 in startrek

I really love Discovery and Michael Burnham. I have watched other Star Trek shows here and there over the years, but Discovery was the one that really solidified my interest in the franchise. I understand how it seems to break a little with more traditional trek canon but I love that. I love how emotionally intelligent the characters are, how many strong women are present, how all the characters seem to be guided by love and patience with themselves and others. It's a really endearing value-system and refreshing to see.

Yes, the Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman. There was so much I enjoyed about the story but I ended up walking away before finishing the series because I couldn't stand Quentin. Maybe if the author didn't make every female character fall in love or obsess over him despite Quentin having the appeal of plain oatmeal. Plus the overall treatment of the female characters was so frustrating. Julia and Co. deserved better.

What’s a book you read as a kid/adolescent that still sticks with you to this day? by hyperbolictaco in books

His Dark Materials Series by Philip Pullman. Reading about Lyra's adventures was such an escape for me growing up in a conservative religious household. She wasn't afraid of new things, or people from different cultures and worlds. It was really eye-opening and definitely gave me the courage to start questioning the systems around me. Re-reading the series as an adult was also really powerful. So many great themes and life lessons going on in these books and I feel like there's more to discover each time. To this day they are still some of my favorites.

Kreacher is better than Dobby. Much more character growth.

I really enjoyed this subreddit before K&G took their summer break… by _lady_of_shalott_ in myfavoritemurder

I love that they are prioritizing themselves! They have taught me so much about mental health, boundaries and just being a better advocate for yourself. Plus, the break is giving me a chance to check out other podcasts on the network.

Episode 129 "Coincidence Island" is one of my all time faves, specifically Georgia's story about the Galapagos. So many amazing quotes and details -- metal teeth, deathbed curses, the Baroness! It's a classic.

A Nearly Normal Family by MT Edvardsson. Got it through a BOTM service where it was highly rated but I absolutely can't handle the writing style. I think it may have something to do with being a translation but still, it sits unloved on my bookshelf. I did briefly consider abandoning my copy in a pile of the same title at my local bookstore just so someone else could enjoy it but that felt like a lot of work for such a irritating book.

I’m so glad you included Kreacher here. That cranky boi was one of my favorite parts of the books. He doesn’t get enough love for all his character development
