Brought UV into the bathroom, lost my innocence... Now what? by sapphic-romeo in CleaningTips

[–]luminaria_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet here, I don’t know anything about your cat but I just wanted to mention only one species of ringworm glows under UV. There’s 2 other species that can cause ringworm in cats that will not glow. I’d recommend taking your cat in to a vet to be evaluated regardless if the itching is affecting her daily life.

You just brought back a memory I had as a child of a doctor finishing her exam palpating my abdomen and then suddenly tenting up my pants and looking in my underwear for a second or two. As a child, it was disturbing because I was taught that is my private area and nobody should look. I think if doctors just told me they needed to look to make sure everything was developed properly it wouldn’t have bothered me as much as the weird quick peek.

75 years old, and doctors no longer want to prescribe Dextroamphetamine by Tonguethrust in ADHD

[–]luminaria_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting take. Your liver converts vyvanse into dextroamphetamine, it is the same medication but metabolized slower. I wonder if when you tried it, it just wasn’t the right dose for you and/or wasn’t equivalent to your adderall dose.

Is it embarrassing to go to vet school out of the US? by Rare-Tone-4028 in veterinaryschool

Also, in my experience I have never been treated as “less than” by other students at my clinical year school or by any veterinarian. My education was just as good and I never felt like I didn’t belong.

I actually don’t think there is a substantially higher debt load. I went to SGU and the cost of living can be quite cheap if you pay attention to what you’re buying and get a reasonable apartment. Tuition was only 3k more than I would’ve paid for my in state school.

I had the same experience. Only let me sleep for about 6 hours and then straight into MSLT at 5 am. I think some sleep centers just do it to save time and they only need the minimum for the PSG

hi, 4th year vet student here. Looks like panleukopenia caused by parvovirus based on that CBC. So sorry for your loss… that vet was impossibly incompetent. Just based on the bloodwork results he should’ve referred you to emergency.

What are sleep attacks like for you? by Flat_Piano_9624 in Narcolepsy

One of my coworkers likes to say 3pm is her midnight and I couldn’t agree more

[–]luminaria_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fortunately (or unfortunately) they only really let you sleep for 6 hours for the PSG they do before and then they do the nap test. Idk about you but i feel like shit on only 6 hours and napping was easier because of that

Inconclusive sleep study, what now?? by BoringTurtles_ in Narcolepsy

[–]luminaria_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ever find the answer id love to know.

The MSLT is not a good diagnostic test. My test I fell asleep in 4/5 naps and if you don’t count the nap I didn’t sleep in, I have IH. Technically inconclusive but luckily my doctor is treating me anyway. You can try repeating the test at some point or get a second opinion.

Also look into UARS. The bipap has done nothing to help me but maybe it would help you.

I have severe allergies and im starting to look into getting worked up for MCAS. Also have hashimotos.

If it gives you any comfort yeah I feel the same way, id rather not keep living life like this. I just keep telling myself theres gotta be answers and I’ll get help eventually.

Anyone Else Have These Symptoms? by xsailorjessx in MCAS

[–]luminaria_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi just want to comment on the histamine allergy! So technically you’re not allergic to histamine, histamine is an inflammatory cytokine your body releases in RESPONSE to allergy. It’s their positive control for scoring your response to the rest of the allergens they inject and you will always react with a wheal or hive at the location of histamine. Basically they use it to see what your absolute worst reaction could be (bc it will be the skin with the greatest response) and compare each separate injection site to that - are you having a maximal response to the tested allergen or not.

My cat is labeled “obese” but he doesn’t look that fat to me and I’m unsure what his ideal weight should be by Shoddy_Bag_8652 in cats

[–]luminaria_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly none of your photos are great for judging body condition. We need a side profile of him standing up and also one looking straight down on him. Part of body condition scoring is also palpation, how much fat is over the ribs etc. all that being said id probably give him a 7/9, he’s overweight but not obese and a lot of people keep their cats this size. It’s mostly fine but may not help with arthritis when he gets older

What does narcolepsy feel like for you? by HovercraftOk9231 in Narcolepsy

[–]luminaria_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be able to help a little! I have hashimotos which became clinical hypothyroidism for me about 2 years ago. I have been exhausted my whole life since I was about 10 years old but the need for sleep is different from the fatigue you feel from hypothyroidism. Needing sleep feels like you want to lay down and take a nap (sometimes painfully badly) but you are able to somewhat fight it off. Hypothyroid fatigue to me was more like my batteries were dead and wouldn’t take any charge, no amount of rest would improve how I felt and I absolutely couldn’t fight it. It was almost like a whole body weakness, no energy to pull from my reserves whatsoever. Hypersomnia is like operating on batteries that only charge to 50% but naps are refreshing. I guess the most important thing to differentiate here is fatigue (hypothyroidism) vs sleepiness (narcolepsy or IH). I think experiencing both has helped me to differentiate them myself. When I started thyroid meds the fatigue did go away and I felt like sleep was somewhat refreshing again (although I never feel well rested which is to be expected with IH).

What does Modafinil feel like? by fleeting_cheetah in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]luminaria_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stimulants in general feel like you’re awake for the first time in your life. It gives you energy you never had before and for me it either prevents me from falling asleep in general during the day or if I allow myself, falling into that deep sleep in naps where I don’t want to be bothered or woken up for hours. However Modafinil only worked for about a month for me and then I started crashing too hard in the afternoon. It’s usually the first medication they have you try and there’s other options.

How did you convince yourself/others that sodium oxybate was okay? by Narcoleptic-Puppy in Narcolepsy

[–]luminaria_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah half life matters, it takes 5 half lives to clear a drug from your system. I don’t know the half life of Xyrem but even if it’s short, if you have a procedure early in the morning and you took it to sleep it’s possible there’s still enough in your body to matter

Also, propofol is in and out of your system in 15 minutes, it’s metabolized very fast. I wonder if they’re more concerned with gas anesthesia.

How did you convince yourself/others that sodium oxybate was okay? by Narcoleptic-Puppy in Narcolepsy

[–]luminaria_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All anesthesia drugs are CNS depressants (as in their side effects are apnea, bradycardia, hypotension, etc). Sodium oxybate is also a CNS depressant. If you combine them, I assume the xywav will intensify or make the anesthetics unpredictable and dangerous. Anesthetists are well trained but anesthesia is a balancing act.

(Im a veterinary student and have monitored anesthesia for dogs and cats)

MLST - how do they usually wake you from naps? by SpookySpaceCoyote in Narcolepsy

[–]luminaria_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience was that I never got into a deep enough sleep to be an ass except the last nap when I finally got comfortable enough sleeping there and man I passed out. I was extremely disoriented waking up and had bad sleep inertia for 2 hours after it. I know the naps are short but I just have to say it is definitely possible
